Chapter 17

“Almighty God the Father…”

A deep voice rang out in the silence, and the residents, who had just begun to recover, suddenly changed their expressions—

This kind of beginning?!! Could it be…

“You are the source of life, you saved us through your Son Jesus, we ask you to look upon Charles Carter…”

Charlie Carter’s gentle voice gradually choked up, unable to continue, but a young voice picked up where he left off. Having lost her father, mother, and more in quick succession, Tina Bennett’s eyes were red as she clutched the music box in her hands, staring intently at Charles Carter’s face.

“Receive him into the eternal light…”

Michael Thompson supported the sheriff, his usually playful face now solemn. “May he gain eternal life in your kingdom…”

“May he, when resurrected, also share in the glory with your Son…”

Old Tom Carter the shopkeeper, Sandra Carter, Mavis Carter, and more voices joined in. Everyone who looked at that battered figure had only reverence and gratitude in their eyes…

A heroic knight, sacrifice, the courage to face death!

The noble virtues that only existed in epic tales were now revealed before their eyes, and the shock it brought was beyond words. The mood that had been affected by the witch’s frenzied declaration at her death was almost immediately overshadowed by this sorrowful greatness!

Countless strangers joined together in this prayer. Different voices gathered, densely packed, men and women, young and old, making the prayer grand and solemn. The solemnity grew ever greater, spreading farther and farther.

Buzzzzz…

Amid the gentle humming, the cross on Charles Carter’s cuff slowly floated up, a soft glow extremely conspicuous in the pre-dawn darkness. The familiar scene made Charlie Carter freeze. At that moment, a warm sensation appeared at his hand. He stiffly lowered his head to look—on his wrist, the cross he had worn for over ten years was slowly rising.

Not just Charlie Carter! This unbelievable scene seemed contagious, happening to everyone around. Those hanging from hands, worn as necklaces, kept close to the body…

One cross after another floated up with a gentle hum, releasing holy silver light. Amid the grand and solemn prayers, the silver light slowly joined together. This incredible scene was clearly reflected in the eyes of everyone present, and every heart was filled with awe. The prayers grew ever louder.

“May he gain eternal life in your kingdom!!”

“May he, like your Son, share in the glory!!”

“All this we ask through our Lord Jesus Christ, you are the Son, your Father is God, with you and the Holy Spirit, forever and ever!!”

The silver holy light suddenly paused, then, with unstoppable force, shot up into the sky, drawing a bright trail in the night. Golden motes of light scattered, illuminating the pre-dawn darkness.

When the radiance faded, the demon hunter’s figure was gone.

Only a longsword remained, thrust at an angle where Charles Carter had been. A streak of golden light pierced the darkness, shining on the sword, runes glittering.

Banish evil!

(remove evil)

Someone muttered in a daze—

“Dawn…”

Chapter Twelve: Sudden Change!

“Faith affected has been restored, subsequent effects successfully removed…”

“Host mission complete! Alaya mission complete, rewards recalculated!”

“Guaranteed reward—host’s lifespan increased by thirty days, remaining lifespan: 328 days.”

“Optional rewards—”

“a—Rune of True Sight: a magical rune inscribed in both pupils, able to see through any form of evil spirit-level entities, see through disguise-type spells or items, and, when gathering battle energy, detect the strength of life force and the magic nodes of low-level magical rituals.

Equivalent to the ocular power currently possessed by Charlie Carter—(provided by Alaya).”

“b—Three years of lifespan!”

“c—World-exclusive item—Ghost-type Creature Detector”

“d—World-exclusive secret divine art—Holy Radiance!”

In the void of black space, lines of azure text appeared before Charles Carter. Charles Carter’s gaze lingered on the three-year lifespan option for a long time, but in the end, he sighed and looked away.

“I choose a, Rune of True Sight.”

As the words fell, the text before his eyes shattered like glass, and then a vast yet gentle consciousness appeared, carefully channeling a mysterious power into Charles Carter’s pupils. With only a slight sting, Charles Carter felt a strange rune appear out of nowhere deep within his eyes.

Slowly opening his eyes, a silver light flashed deep in Charles Carter’s pupils.

A line of text appeared.

“Rune of True Sight, received.”

“…There’s nothing different about this…” Charles Carter raised his hand to rub his eyes, then chuckled, “Well, there aren’t any evil spirits here for me to see anyway.”

“Beep, detecting other gains in this world…”
