Chapter 16

“When will humans ever learn to be a bit more obedient, a bit more well-behaved?” Ethan Carter shook his head and walked forward without a care.

“Stop! You—” Mad Dog’s repeated shouts had no effect. In desperation, he pulled the trigger, and the bullet struck Ethan Carter right between the eyebrows with perfect accuracy.

Just like last time, the bullet seemed to hit the armor of a tank, bouncing off and falling to the ground.

Ethan Carter looked at the dozen or so stunned thugs and asked, “So? Can we talk now?”

Wild Dog stammered fiercely, “Sh-sh-shoot him!” He kept firing his pistol, and the other armed underlings, gripped by terror, also kept shooting frantically.

Normally, such a barrage of gunfire would definitely attract attention from others or rival factions.

But in a wild and chaotic nightclub, the gunshots, though loud, were still no match for the booming speakers.

The sharp gunfire was completely drowned out by the wild, frenzied music. No one outside the restroom heard a thing.

Click... click... click...

Wild Dog and his men emptied their magazines at Ethan Carter. The bullets were soon spent. Though still terrified, they kept pulling the triggers, but the pistols could only make empty clicks.

“If it weren’t for the fact that I have to deal with a new batch of punks, I would have killed you all dozens of times by now.” Ethan Carter jumped up onto the sink, sat there, and looked at them as he spoke: “Alright, let’s talk about my pharmacy issue.”

Wild Dog and his men looked at Ethan Carter ashen-faced. Quite a few, who had already finished peeing, were so scared they wet themselves again.

“Boss... boss... please have mercy... I won’t dare do it again...” By now, Wild Dog had lost all his earlier bravado, kneeling on the ground and kowtowing repeatedly.

“You destroyed over three hundred thousand worth of my medicine. Plus the four hundred thousand you already owed me, that’s a total of seven hundred thousand.” Ethan Carter bent down, looking at the sniveling, tearful Wild Dog.

“Se-se-seven hundred thousand...” Wild Dog gasped, momentarily stopping his crying, and asked in disbelief.

“Looks like I remembered wrong. It should be eight hundred thousand. I’ll give you five days.” Ethan Carter stroked his chin, looking thoughtful.

“Ei-ei-eight hundred...” Seeing the look in Ethan Carter’s eyes change, Wild Dog was afraid he’d raise the price again, so he quickly changed his tone: “Alright! Eight hundred thousand it is! I’ll pay! I swear I’ll pay! It’s just... just, about that debt, could you maybe give me a few more days...?” Mad Dog asked Ethan Carter as humbly and quietly as possible.

Ethan Carter smiled at Mad Dog in front of him, raised his right hand, and gestured for him to come a little closer.

Mad Dog looked at Ethan Carter’s pleasant smile, but felt a chill inside as he cautiously moved closer, watching Ethan Carter warily.

“When you guys go collecting debts, what do you usually say when someone can’t pay?” Ethan Carter gently patted Mad Dog on the shoulder and asked.

“Well...” Mad Dog broke out in a cold sweat and stammered, “We... boss... please, I’ll pay you as soon as I collect the money...”

Ethan Carter shook his head lightly, looking helpless: “Kid, it seems you still don’t get what I mean. What you just said is what the debtor says when they can’t pay, not your line.”

“My comprehension isn’t great, could you maybe...”

Ethan Carter nodded, looking reluctant, and sighed: “Alright! I know, a lot of people in this business don’t like to get involved with drugs. They say, ‘I may love money, but I don’t sell just anything.’ But a gangster is still a gangster. Loan sharking is just as harmful as drugs—it ruins families, destroys lives.

And I know, basically anyone in this line of work gets involved in it. So, how about this: just give me your loan sharking ledgers.”

Mad Dog was afraid he’d misheard, and asked in disbelief, “That’s it?”

“That’s it.” Ethan Carter said with a smile. As he opened the door, which had been locked from the outside, he added, “I want the total principal that adds up to what you owe me, not the amount with interest. Oh, and I’m homeless tonight, so I hope you guys can clean up for me, and get me a sofa and a door, so I have a place to sleep.”

Mad Dog, who had just gotten excited for two seconds, suddenly felt the world spinning. He swallowed hard a few times, and looking at Ethan Carter’s back, muttered under his breath, “Eighty thousand in principal, all together? If you want to push me, Mad Dog, to the edge, then don’t blame me for being ruthless and using the gang’s power. Even if it costs me some status, it’s better than losing my life.”
