Chapter 13

“How did you know this is a platinum necklace?” Ian Lawson was rather dejected. He had spent a long time testing it himself, only for Carolyn Turner to blurt it out instantly—could it be that her appraisal skills far surpassed his own?

“Silly, what man wears a silver necklace? Besides, such a thick platinum chain really looks like a dog collar. You’re really showing off your wealth, huh? Hand it over, let me take a look.”

—That simple? Ian Lawson’s face immediately turned sour.

What a failure, women’s intuition about money is truly intimidating.

Ian Lawson took off the necklace and casually removed the pendant. This action didn’t draw any protest from the two women. The pendant was shiny and light, looking like it was nickel-plated. The two women were too busy marveling at the necklace. “Who would’ve thought, this little guy doesn’t look like much, but he’s actually so rich. This necklace must weigh about 200 grams, right? Wow, the whole thing is worth over 30,000… Wearing more than 30,000 around his neck, and he doesn’t even have a job yet, it’s hard to imagine.” Autumn Lewis sighed with emotion.

Carolyn Turner threw a flirtatious glance at Roger Lawson, beckoned Ian Lawson to come closer, softly placed her hand on his shoulder, gently brushing against him, and said in a coquettish voice, “Little Annie, my door is always open for you. If there’s something you want tomorrow, why not go after it today?”

Ian Lawson was startled and quickly dodged, replying, “I’d better go to the kitchen and make a few more dishes. Oh right, I’m hungry too. You two keep drinking.”

Ian Lawson’s words rekindled the women’s hunger. Back at the table, Carolyn Turner casually placed the necklace on the dining table, and there was a bit more respect in her gaze toward Ian Lawson.

“They say a broken family is still worth a fortune, and it seems to be true. My Little Man has no job, no house, no car, yet he’s wandering around with a 30,000-yuan necklace hanging from his neck. Not bad at all.”

Ian Lawson chewed his food, mumbling unclearly, “Who’s your Little Man? You two aunties only ever talk about money, so bluntly. Money isn’t everything.”

Carolyn Turner was stubborn: “Money isn’t everything? Nonsense! Then what is? What’s closer to being everything than money—that’s what is everything.”

Autumn Lewis looked at Carolyn Turner and Ian Lawson, raised her glass to mediate, and said, “Come on, let’s celebrate. Sister Carolyn finally has a home, and our Little Annie has finally become Sister Carolyn’s prized collection. Cheers!”

Little Annie, that name sounds just like a eunuch’s title. Ian Lawson glared angrily at Autumn Lewis. But Autumn Lewis was completely unfazed: “Little Annie, don’t worry about work. I’ll introduce you to someone with connections another day. You can work for him, you won’t be mistreated.”

Carolyn Turner raised her glass and cheered, “Great, Little Annie’s job is settled. Autumn, thank you. Come on, let’s drink.”

Ian Lawson looked at Carolyn Turner in surprise. The quick-witted Carolyn Turner immediately understood his meaning and explained, “Little Annie, don’t think I’m not helping. I work at a foreign company. Foreign companies have strict rules—people in a romantic or family relationship aren’t allowed to work at the same company. If I arrange for you to join my company, and later people find out you’re living with me, then one of us would have to resign. Autumn works at a private company, so only she can help with this.”

Autumn Lewis chimed in, “I’m not competing with Sister Carolyn for a man, don’t get the wrong idea. Look, from the company’s perspective, if a couple works at the same company, punishing one will affect the other’s motivation, which impacts the company’s efficiency.

And from a family economics perspective—you can’t put all your investments in one project. If both spouses work at the same company, and the company runs into trouble, the whole family loses its income source. That’s why Western laws stipulate: if a boss encourages or allows employees to form families within the company, it’s considered employee abuse, and the boss will be penalized. Sister Carolyn can’t introduce you to a job… even at a related company, it would look like a brother company is trying to steal trade secrets.”

Carolyn Turner raised her glass, gazing at her own reflection with self-pity, and said, “The hard-won achievements of the proletariat over the years have only made things tough for us beauties! All the promising young men have been snatched up by good companies. The ones we fancy either belong to competitors or are in partner companies. We can only look, not touch—it’s so frustrating.”

Ian Lawson, half understanding and half mocking, muttered, “So, the so-called ‘dual-income couple’ is actually just the leadership persecuting employees! Hahaha, Ms. Turner, you don’t dare introduce me to your company—could it be you’ve fallen for me? Don’t hide it… love is like a cough, it can’t be concealed.”

“Damn Annie, how dare you joke about me! Just wait, tonight I’ll squeeze you dry,” Carolyn Turner raised her hand and gave Ian Lawson a slap.

“Let me make it clear, I don’t like being called a eunuch. If anyone dares call me Little Annie again, I’ll climb into their bed and show them I’m no eunuch.” Ian Lawson said sulkily, “Sister Carolyn, we’re living under the same roof. Mountain climbing and rock climbing are my specialties—if you push me too far, you won’t be able to handle it…”

Carolyn Turner looked meaningfully at Ian Lawson’s muscles, and said bluntly, “Ah, a strong man is best suited to be a lover. You don’t need to climb mountains or rocks—my door is always open. Just come and knock.”
