Logan Knight (Ryan Lincoln): I’m home now, we’ll talk after I get in.
Ryan Lincoln started up the hovercar again and drove up to his family’s townhouse.
When he got out of the car, the shared hover-motorcycle automatically lifted off and flew away. With a heavy heart, Ryan Lincoln pushed open the door and walked straight into his living room.
As soon as he entered, he was greeted by the rich aroma of food.
Looking at the dining table, Ryan Lincoln saw four large soup bowls and six dishes, his face full of surprise: “Sean Lincoln, are you crazy? Why did you make so much food today? How are the two of us supposed to eat all this? You even bought naturally raised grouper—how much did that cost?”
Because most of the base cities on Sky Pole Star lacked breeding facilities, the vast majority of food for ordinary people was artificially synthesized. Those naturally farmed ingredients were all imported from other colony planets and were extremely expensive.
“You’re the crazy one!”
Carrying a bowl of soup, Sean Lincoln pouted as she walked out of the kitchen: “This is to celebrate you passing the Variant Assessment. If you don’t spend money now, when will you? Go wash your hands.”
She pretended to be angry, but inside she was sad, suspicious, and resentful.
If it was really her brother who passed the Variant Combat Assessment today, it would naturally be a great thing.
But what if her brother had already been replaced by someone else?
Today, she had to get to the bottom of this.
Sean Lincoln set down the soup bowl and looked at Ryan Lincoln with feigned surprise: “Did you really make it into the top 11 in the combat assessment, bro?”
This guy actually managed to rank that high?
But this only made Sean Lincoln’s suspicions stronger.
Her brother had always had good grades, but there was no way he could have improved his combat skills to such a level in such a short time.
“Would I lie about that?”
Ryan Lincoln walked off to wash his hands, looking a bit smug: “Didn’t I tell you at noon? I was going to have surgery at the school’s affiliated hospital to get a top-grade meridian transplant. That’s a reward from the school board. If I hadn’t ranked so high, would the school be so generous? Oh, right—”
He opened his personal account and transferred 5,000 federal credits to Sean Lincoln: “This is your living expenses for the next few months. Ask me for more when you run out. Also, while I was coming home, I already pre-ordered a top-grade artificial dantian and a top-grade artificial meridian for you. Go to our school’s affiliated hospital this weekend to get them implanted.”
Sean Lincoln’s pupils widened, her eyes full of disbelief.
She looked at Ryan Lincoln in shock and uncertainty: “That costs a lot of money. A top-grade dantian and meridian together must be seventy or eighty thousand!”
“Didn’t I say? I got a thirty-thousand federal credit scholarship this time, plus a refund of twenty-seven thousand in tuition and fees for this year. Add in our family savings and we can scrape together seventy thousand. Tomorrow, once I get my Variant License, my credit rating will go up, and then I can take out a thirty-thousand consumer loan. That’ll be enough.”
Ryan Lincoln walked back to the table and ruffled Sean Lincoln’s hair: “Once you get the meridian implant, with your talent, Sean Lincoln, you’ll be able to transfer to a private Armored High School in no time.”
Hearing this, Sean Lincoln lowered her head, letting her bangs hide her face so Ryan Lincoln couldn’t see her expression: “Let’s not. Tuition at private Armored High Schools is really expensive.”
Ryan Lincoln couldn’t help but laugh: “Are you silly? Don’t forget my current combat ranking is 11th. Do we still need to worry about money now? All those Variant exploration companies and government agencies will be fighting to recruit me. Which of the top 100 Variant students doesn’t get a high salary even during their internship? Besides—”
He paused, his gaze extremely serious: “I owe you this!”
He also owed it to the other Ryan Lincoln.
Ryan Lincoln had inherited this body, so he had to take on its responsibilities.
This little sister made his heart ache. Sean Lincoln clearly had even greater martial talent than her brother, yet she’d always refused to get an artificial dantian implanted.
Not only did she give every opportunity to Ryan Lincoln, but for years she’d supported him without reservation, working hard to keep the family together.
Ryan Lincoln was even a little jealous of his predecessor for having such a wonderful sister.
Through Sean Lincoln’s bangs, Ryan Lincoln saw her eyes turning slightly red, and couldn’t help ruffling her hair again: “Don’t worry. Once I get the Variant License, our family’s situation will only get better and better. It’s settled—Saturday morning you’re getting the implants. I’ve already paid the deposit.”
After saying this, he picked up his chopsticks and reached for the braised pork in front of him.
This had always been his favorite dish, and even after crossing over, his tastes hadn’t changed. Sean Lincoln must have noticed and deliberately placed the bowl in front of him.
But just as Ryan Lincoln reached out with his chopsticks, Sean Lincoln snatched the bowl away first.
Ryan Lincoln was a little taken aback: “What are you doing?”
“This dish is cold. I’ll go heat it up.”
Sean Lincoln hurried into the kitchen with the bowl.
After a moment’s hesitation, she dumped the braised pork into the trash.
Sean Lincoln still couldn’t be sure if the Ryan Lincoln before her was really her brother.
But the problem was, besides her brother—her only family in the world—who else would treat her so well? Who else would, right after getting a Variant License, hand over all his money for her implants without holding anything back?
