Chapter 15

The woman beside James Brooks helped him sit down on the bed, while James Brooks was still in shock. Cold sweat streamed down his forehead like a small creek, and his eyes remained unfocused for quite a while before slowly regaining their focus.

The woman at his side could clearly feel the uncontrollable trembling coming from James Brooks. She had never seen her master so terrified before.

Chapter 8 Equipment Depot

James Brooks’s father was just as frightened as James Brooks. On the desk in his father’s bedroom, there was also a note, but instead of telling him to wash his neck, it warned him to discipline his son properly, or next time it wouldn’t just be a note delivered. For an ace sniper whose strength had increased several times over, sneaking into such an ordinary mansion was simply too easy.

The thought that their heads could be taken at any time left both father and son unspeakably terrified. In all these years, no one had ever made them feel such fear.

Although their family was a distant branch of the Song family, in this small place, they were still the undisputed overlords, with a household full of servants and guards. Yet even so, not a single person noticed when the note appeared on James Brooks’s neck, let alone saw anyone’s shadow.

After their fright, the Song father and son flew into a rage. The servants and guards on duty that night were scolded harshly, and a few guards who were supposed to watch over the inner residence were even whipped, left bloody and tied up in the main courtyard at the entrance of the Song residence for all to see.

At dawn, many people were waiting to see William Carter make a fool of himself. But to their surprise, the few young men who had sworn yesterday to go teach William Carter a lesson hadn’t shown up since early morning. Someone inquired and heard they had caught a cold and were staying home sick. Sigh, what a pity, there would be no spectacle to watch.

Some still refused to give up, waiting for the most ruthless James Brooks of the Song family to make a move. It was said that yesterday, James Brooks had even gone to Baoqing Yutang to check out Emily Brooks’s fiancé and had apparently issued threats. Surely today he would give William Carter a real beating?

In the end, James Brooks’s behavior was even more disappointing. He never left the house the entire time. Curious people found out that James Brooks had strained his arm while practicing last night and was recuperating at home.

That was it—no excitement to be had at all. Many people were extremely disappointed, but they were also unwilling to provoke William Carter themselves. After all, everyone knew William Carter was Miss Song Yan’s fiancé; if they embarrassed him openly, wouldn’t they end up on Miss Song Yan’s blacklist? Smart people wouldn’t do something so thankless.

William Carter was unaware of all this. He only knew that starting today, at least a group of people wouldn’t dare mess with him lightly, giving him a few days to continue improving his physical fitness and to find the equipment depot.

For the past two days, William Carter had done nothing but wait for the right time, then take a Peiyuan Pill, and after the effects wore off, he would start doing bodyweight exercises. One Peiyuan Pill plus the time spent exercising gave him four or five hours; with three pills a day, it was enough for William Carter to fill up his entire day.

After three days, William Carter finally finished all ten Peiyuan Pills. The defect in his soul fish was almost half remedied, and his physical fitness had at least doubled compared to the first day.

Now, William Carter could easily do a set of a thousand push-ups and a thousand sit-ups without resting. In just four days, he had completely surpassed the limits of his training back on Earth. If nothing else, in terms of strength and endurance alone, William Carter had increased several times over compared to his time on Earth.

On the fifth day, William Carter put on his camouflage uniform, casually carried his helmet, and strolled out the door. After wandering around the streets for a while and buying some rations, he headed straight out of the city. For activities in the mountains and forests, his combat uniform was still the most comfortable.

As soon as William Carter left the city, a few people with ill intentions secretly followed him. Previously, William Carter had stayed in the courtyard and never came out, making it inconvenient for anyone to cause trouble. Now that William Carter had left the city on his own, he couldn’t blame others for being ruthless.

The Song family was large, and in this small city, James Brooks wasn’t the only one infatuated with Song Yan. At least a hundred young men of similar age had feelings for her. So, as soon as they heard Song Yan had a fiancé, William Carter became the public enemy, and everyone was united in wanting to teach him a solid lesson.

Neither James Brooks nor the few sneaky guys who had been taught a lesson by William Carter would dare speak of it. How could they casually tell others about such an embarrassing thing? With no one knowing, there was naturally no real deterrent effect.

But when a group of people followed William Carter into the forest, they were all dumbfounded.

Wearing his mountain camouflage, William Carter was like a chameleon in the woods; the mottled colors quickly made his figure disappear among the trees. Even though the people following him were only a little over a hundred meters behind, once inside, they couldn’t see any trace of William Carter.

Dozens of people emerged from different directions, looking at each other in confusion. Who would have thought that following a nobody would lead to such an absurd situation? So many people, and yet as soon as they entered the forest, they lost track of him. It was an unprecedented blunder!
