He suppressed his laughter and asked, “Sam Harris, I still don’t quite understand. I just got here, I have no grudges with Captain Brooks, and I don’t think I’ve offended him in any way. Why does he want to kill me?”
James Carter’s half-smiling, half-serious expression looked even more terrifying to Youngest Harris, who was so scared he nearly wet his pants.
Youngest Harris hurriedly said, “That batch of ‘immortal earth’ you seized a few days ago belonged to the Black Tiger Gang. Everyone in the patrol team knows that Captain Brooks and the Black Tiger Gang’s boss John Bennett are thick as thieves. Who would dare check their goods…”
“All because of that?”
James Carter sighed and said, “Captain Brooks should have just told me the goods were his. Then I’d have known what to do.”
“Going straight to murder, that’s just too much.”
Youngest Harris nodded repeatedly, “Yes, yes, it’s all Captain Brooks being too extreme. There’s no need to go that far. I’ll go back and talk to Captain Brooks properly, this is just a misunderstanding…”
James Carter smiled and asked, “Sam Harris, you know where Captain Brooks is, right?”
Youngest Harris hesitated for a moment and said, “Captain Brooks is waiting for my news at the Black Butterfly Bar. Mr. Carter, I can take you there.”
He emphasized again, “The Black Butterfly Bar is the Black Tiger Gang’s base. Their boss John Bennett is there all year round, and I’m quite familiar with Boss Bennett too…”
“No need, this is between me and Captain Brooks. I’ll just talk to him myself.”
James Carter said to Youngest Harris, “Sam Harris, I’m a fair and principled person. I won’t make things hard for you.”
Hearing James Carter’s gentle tone, Youngest Harris finally breathed a sigh of relief. He forced a smile, “Mr. Carter, you’re so magnanimous to spare me. I’ll remember your great kindness for the rest of my life.”
“No need, it’s over.”
James Carter waved his hand, then casually tossed Youngest Harris to the ground and picked up the six-shot revolver. He popped out the cylinder to eject the spent shells, then took bullets from his belt and loaded them one by one.
James Carter’s unhurried movements made Youngest Harris’s hair stand on end. He slowly backed away, pleading, “What are you doing? Don’t kill me, murder means the death penalty.
“You’re a patrol officer, you have a bright future ahead…”
“I told you, I’m a fair person. You shot me six times, I’ll return six shots. Not one more.” James Carter said slowly.
Youngest Harris was desperate, “It was all David Brooks’s orders, Mr. Carter, please spare my worthless life.”
“Captain Brooks, I’ll deal with him myself. You don’t need to worry.”
Looking at the ashen-faced Youngest Harris, James Carter showed a hint of pity. “Sam Harris, we do know each other. How about this, I’ll give you a fifty percent discount—just three shots. Fair enough?”
“Screw you…”
Youngest Harris could see it now—James Carter looked friendly and cheerful, but he was vicious at heart.
He cursed, then turned and leapt with all his might toward the river.
He’d grown up by the river and was an excellent swimmer. The current was swift, but if he drifted with it, he had a good chance of surviving.
Suddenly, James Carter stepped forward and grabbed Youngest Harris’s ankle in one swift motion.
Youngest Harris, fat as a ball and weighing nearly two hundred pounds, plus the force of his jump, was still caught by James Carter with one hand, as easily as grabbing an empty paper bag.
Dangling upside down, Youngest Harris was scared out of his wits. He never imagined James Carter could be so strong and react so quickly.
He wailed for mercy, “Spare me, spare me…”
“Sam Harris, you want to swim? Let me help you.”
With a flick of his wrist, James Carter spun Youngest Harris around and sent him flying over a meter high.
As Youngest Harris came down, James Carter swept his leg across his back.
This kick was full of power—fierce and ruthless.
In midair, Youngest Harris was bent into a V-shape. His spine snapped on the spot, and who knows how many of his organs were shattered.
Youngest Harris spewed blood and flew two meters, plunging into the raging river in a twisted posture.
“Goodbye, Sam Harris. Enjoy your night swim.” James Carter waved at Youngest Harris’s spinning body in the water, but Youngest Harris gave no response.
His fat body spun a few times in the river, then was quickly swallowed by the surging current, vanishing without a trace.
“Emily, how was my kicking technique?”
James Carter asked the white-clad girl beside him with a grin.
The girl in white gave James Carter a thumbs up and praised, “One word: superb.”

Chapter 2: A Person Who Values ‘Etiquette’
The thunderous gunshots and faint smell of gunpowder on the embankment were all swept away by the howling river wind.
Youngest Harris’s corpse had long since drifted who knows where.
The only trace left was a few bullet casings on the embankment.
James Carter swept them into the river with his foot, erasing the last bit of evidence.
As for whether Youngest Harris’s body would be found downstream, James Carter didn’t care at all.
The Alliance’s states were essentially autonomous, corruption was rampant among officials at all levels, and gangs ran wild. As long as no one investigated, nobody would care about the life or death of a lowly patrol officer.
James Carter said to the girl in white, “Emily, you can go back now, no need to keep watching me.”
The only reason he could cross into this world was because of the Taiyi Order. Emily was the spirit born from the Taiyi Order.
In the material world, Emily was like a ghost—only he could see her.
