Chapter 15

The newspaper said that David Brooks fought bravely in the anti-gang operation and was killed by members of the Black Tiger Gang. That kind of story is just nonsense.

Everyone in the Fourth Inspection Team knows that David Brooks and Duan Heihu were as close as wearing the same pair of underwear. David Brooks would get into a fight with the Black Tiger Gang? What a joke!

John Thompson slapped the newspaper out of Henry Scott's hands. "Don't ask what you shouldn't. Wait for instructions from above."

Seeing that John Thompson looked a bit serious, Henry Scott pouted and didn't dare say anything more.

After John Thompson left, a group of inspectors gathered around the newspaper, chatting animatedly.

"Old Du was killed by the Black Tiger Gang? That's fucking hilarious!"

"Old Du was ruthless—good riddance!"

"I've been sick of him for ages. Good riddance, good riddance..."

David Brooks was autocratic in the inspection team, crazily amassing wealth, and everyone up and down hated the guy.

Hearing the news of David Brooks's death, everyone in the meeting room was as happy as if it were New Year's.

Henry Scott's broad face was full of disdain. "Are you all stupid? Look carefully, the key is James Carter!"

"Old Du is dead, the Black Tiger Gang is wiped out, James Carter is going to get promoted and rich!"

Having mixed in the inspection team for decades, Henry Scott had some experience. One look at the photo in the newspaper, and he was basically sure that James Carter had a powerful background—this time, James Carter had won.

But the other inspectors didn't care. "James Carter's background has nothing to do with us!"

"Is he going to get us promoted or give us a raise?"

"Who cares where he comes from..."

Henry Scott was speechless at this group of inspectors. A bunch of idiots—James Carter has someone backing him, so if he becomes their captain in the future, wouldn't that be easy?

If you cozy up to him early, you might get some benefits later. But there was no need to say this much to this bunch of fools.

While the inspectors were chatting away, Henry Scott heard the roar of a motorcycle from outside the window. That deep, powerful sound had to be James Carter's Wild Wolf motorcycle.

There were only a few of these rugged, tough-looking motorcycles in Linhai. The first time James Carter came to work, everyone was shocked by his big bike.

Henry Scott saw James Carter park his motorcycle and hurried over to greet him. "You're here."

James Carter was a bit surprised. Henry Scott usually just called him Xiao Gao—why so attentive today? Oh, it must be because the news about David Brooks had already spread.

He nodded at Henry Scott. "Brother Shi, what's up?"

"Nothing, nothing..."

Henry Scott smiled along. He already had a broad face, and with his naturally ruddy complexion, his ingratiating smile looked even more honest.

He handed the newspaper to James Carter. "You're in the paper! The photo looks great!"

James Carter took it and glanced at it. Sure enough, there he was in the photo.

Just like Henry Scott said, that side profile really was handsome...

Young James Carter was originally quite ordinary, but the Vajra Divine Power technique he practiced was incredibly mysterious. It made his body develop in perfect golden proportions as he grew, so his looks and physique far surpassed the average person.

Because of this, every time James Carter looked in the mirror, he felt that practicing the Vajra Divine Power technique was totally worth it.

Henry Scott praised again, "The Black Tiger Gang did evil for years. Thanks to you for wiping them out and ridding the people of a great scourge! You're amazing!"

As he spoke, Henry Scott even gave a thumbs up.

James Carter couldn't help but laugh. Henry Scott really hadn't wasted his education—his flattery was a cut above the other inspectors.

He said modestly, "It was all thanks to the sub-bureau leadership's wise command. I was just cooperating."

James Carter sighed, "It's a pity about Captain Du, sacrificing himself heroically to eliminate the Black Tiger Gang..."

"Yeah, yeah..."

Henry Scott echoed him, but in his heart he was sighing: David Brooks and the Black Tiger Gang were taken out, and James Carter definitely had something to do with it. But look at this kid, how smooth he talks!

Damn, no wonder he's a top graduate of the Inspection Academy!

Henry Scott walked James Carter to the office door but didn't have the nerve to follow him in. After all, there were other inspectors in the office.

He was a level-three inspector himself, with plenty of seniority. Sucking up to James Carter was fine, but doing it in front of several inspectors would be embarrassing.

As soon as James Carter entered, the other three inspectors in the office all greeted him enthusiastically.

This kind of warmth was very different from before.

If even Henry Scott, an inspector, could see what was going on, the inspectors certainly saw it even more clearly.

David Brooks, who once ruled the Fourth Inspection Team with an iron fist, was taken down so easily. It showed just how formidable the newcomer James Carter was.

With such a powerhouse, of course they had to be respectful. But they wouldn't cozy up as directly as Henry Scott.

David Brooks could dominate the Fourth Inspection Team because he had someone behind him.

If they were going to cozy up, they'd wait until James Carter had firmly established himself. Rushing in now could easily get them into trouble.

Their little bodies couldn't handle any storms.

James Carter chatted politely with the inspectors, and they all flattered him. The atmosphere was, of course, very pleasant.

In just over ten minutes, James Carter and the others had become quite friendly. Their relationship quickly upgraded from mutual indifference to enthusiastic work partners.

Deputy Captain John Thompson pushed the door open and saw a few people who usually never spoke, now acting like they were glued together.

John Thompson nodded politely to James Carter. "James Carter, come, I have something to discuss with you. Hope I'm not interrupting."

The inspectors were quick to catch on. "We'll step out for some air, Deputy Captain, you two talk..."
