Chapter 3

The two of them turned their heads at the sound, only to see a young girl in a high-necked black sweater secretly peeking inside.

The girl looked about sixteen or seventeen, just at that most beautiful, budding age.

Her skin was fair as jade, and her jet-black hair cascaded down her shoulders like a waterfall. She was as lovely as a flower bud just beginning to bloom.

Seeing the two young people hesitating to speak, the attending doctor tactfully chuckled, gently pushed his glasses up his nose with a finger, and turned to walk toward the door.

“I’ve got something to take care of. You two go ahead. Oh, Little David, remember to take your medicine on time later.”

As soon as the doctor left, the girl walked in. The two exchanged a smile, and David Thompson immediately felt a sweet warmth in his heart, his worries about his illness quickly forgotten.

“Stop smiling, you look so silly when you do. Look what I brought you—review assignments personally assigned by the teachers!” The mischievous-looking girl pulled a canvas shoulder bag from behind her back.

Hearing this, David Thompson's face instantly fell. “Anna, after all these years of growing up together, is this how you repay me?”

The girl named Anna Harris turned to close the door, then took out a small handheld game console and shook it triumphantly. “And this~ Hehe, be good, call me ‘big sister’ and I’ll give it to you.”

“Big sis! You’re my real big sis.” David Thompson rushed over excitedly and snatched the game console from her hand.

Being cooped up in the psychiatric hospital every day was so boring, he was about to go crazy even if he wasn’t already.

“Don’t play too much, remember to do your homework.” Anna Harris sat sideways on the edge of the bed, reminding David Thompson as he powered on the console.

“Mm, mm, mm.” David Thompson's attention was completely focused on the handheld screen.

Slender, fair fingers pinched the blue-and-white hospital gown he wore, tugging at it affectionately. “Hey, don’t forget what you promised me.”

David Thompson paused, looked up at her, and his face suddenly turned very serious. “Yeah, we agreed to take the entrance exam for the same university.”

Anna Harris, a bit shy under his gaze, lowered her head, her voice as soft as a mosquito’s. “Mm, get well soon. I’ll wait for you.”

Suddenly, David Thompson reached out and pulled her into his arms.

Blushing, Anna Harris didn’t struggle, just closed her eyes and whispered, “You big perv.”

They didn’t do anything else; just holding each other was enough to make the two lovebirds feel happy.

After a while, Anna Harris had to leave. After all, it was the most crucial period of her senior year, and being able to spare even half a day was already precious.

Although each visit was short, for David Thompson, it was a ray of hope in his difficult days.

“I’ll walk you to the hospital gate.” Wearing his blue-and-white striped hospital gown, David Thompson lifted the covers and slipped on the hospital’s white slippers.

As he followed Anna Harris toward the door, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. Suddenly, he noticed that the mortar and pestle he used to grind medicine in his hallucinations was sitting on the bedside table.

David Thompson's body shuddered and he took two steps back, but when he looked again, he saw that the mortar and pestle had turned into his lunchbox.

“What’s wrong, are you okay?” Seeing his startled reaction, Anna Harris looked a little worried.

Seeing the concern on her face, David Thompson immediately put on a goofy grin. “Haha, did I scare you?”

Anna Harris puffed out her cheeks in annoyance, frowning as she pinched his waist hard. “How old are you now? Still acting like a little kid, doing such childish things.”

“Don’t be mad, I just wanted to make you happy.” David Thompson reached out to hold her hand, but she shook him off.

But after a few tries, their hands finally found each other and intertwined.

The other patients basking in the sun in the courtyard saw this scene and all smiled warmly. Such innocent, pure love was truly beautiful.

Though they walked slowly, they eventually reached the end. Standing at the hospital entrance, Anna Harris looked at David Thompson with reluctance. “I’ll come see you again next week. Take care of yourself in here.”

“Maybe you shouldn’t come next week. I know the pressure to study is heavy now, and you only get half a day off each week. Don’t waste it on me.”

Anna Harris lifted her shapely leg and gently stepped on David Thompson's hospital slipper, her delicate brows knitting together.

“Slacker, don’t judge others by yourself, okay? My ranking has never dropped out of the top three. What pressure?”

“Ah~” David Thompson clutched his chest, putting on a look of agony. “That hurts, girl.”

Anna Harris giggled at his antics, gave him a playful punch, then turned and ran like a little deer toward the bus stop across from the hospital gate.

He watched until the bus his little girlfriend was on disappeared from sight, and only then did the smile fade from David Thompson's face.

Recalling what he had just seen, he walked anxiously toward the doctor’s office.

An hour later, lying in bed tossing and turning, unable to sleep, David Thompson worriedly pondered his future with Anna Harris, while the new medication for his new symptoms sat on the table beside him.
