"Go, bring the medicine guide named Lily White from the storeroom."
David Thompson's heart skipped a beat. He slipped his right hand, which was making a salute, into his sleeve and touched the anklet with the red string. Lily White seemed to be the name of that albino girl.
"Hmm~?" Daniel Thompson turned to look at the new disciple who hadn't responded for a long time.
David Thompson immediately felt a toothache all over. Honestly, he had just said he would look out for her, and now he was supposed to go back and send her to her death. He really couldn't bring himself to do it.
"Did you not hear what I said?"
Sensing that Daniel Thompson's tone was turning unfriendly, David Thompson sighed helplessly and closed his eyes.
When he opened his eyes again, he was back in the pristine white hospital room. "What should I do?"
In the past, he would have obeyed without a second thought. But the problem was, that other world now seemed very likely to be real. If he really brought her over, he might actually be killing someone, and he just couldn't get past that in his heart.
After the nurses let him go, David Thompson bit his thumbnail and paced back and forth in the room. "What should I do? What should I do?"
Before he could come up with a solution, the door to the hospital room was pushed open from the outside, and David Thompson saw his attending doctor walk in.
He gave a bitter smile. Great, now he's cornered on both sides, not even able to run.
The doctor, looking exasperated, pointed at him. "You, you—after the visiting family leaves, we'll have a private talk."
"Visiting family?"
Before David Thompson could react, he saw his haggard-looking mother hurry in from outside, carrying some oranges.
"I heard you got into a fight in the hospital? What happened to your head? Why is it bandaged like that? Does it hurt?" The woman rushed over, anxiously looking him over.
"Mom, it doesn't hurt. I'm fine, really, I'm fine. They're the ones with the problem." David Thompson quickly tried to reassure her.
After a long while of comforting, David Thompson finally managed to keep his mother's tears from falling.
In front of his closest family, all the troubles from the other side had to be set aside for now.
"Don't worry, I'm doing great. My illness is much better, and I haven't fallen behind on my studies. Once I'm discharged, I can take the college entrance exam." David Thompson tried his best to share only good news.
"Don't try to hide it. The doctor already told me. Tell me, what exactly happened that day? Who started the fight?"
David Thompson explained to his mother as gently as possible, but it didn't seem to help much.
"If we're in the right, why pay any money?! They're the ones at fault! Even if they're sick, it's still the hospital's responsibility to supervise! Our family never bullies others, but we absolutely can't let others bully us! If they want to go to court, fine! Even in court, we're in the right!!" The agitated Grace Scott slammed the table with a bang.
Seeing the doctor awkwardly rubbing his nose on the side, David Thompson continued to calm her down. "Mom, mom, don't get worked up. Since you finally came, just keep me company, okay?"
Grace Scott suppressed her anger, bent down, and took out some fruit from the bag. "Don't worry about this anymore, let mom handle it. Here, this is your favorite milk bodhi, eat more. Look how thin you've gotten. The hospital food isn't good, is it?"
"No, no, the hospital food is actually pretty good." David Thompson sat beside his mother and started eating.
Listening to his mother's complaints and eating the sweet grapes, David Thompson felt his heart settle down.
He liked this feeling. Ever since he entered the hospital, it had been a long time since he felt the warmth of family.
Looking at his mother, David Thompson almost opened his mouth to tell her everything that had happened to him, but when the words reached his lips, he swallowed them back.
No, she's not like Anna Harris. If he told her, she'd only think his condition was getting worse. He couldn't let her worry anymore. He'd wait until everything was stable before telling her.
While the mother and son were chatting happily, the attending doctor's phone rang. "Ms. Sun, the family of patient Liu has also arrived. Would you—"
"Son, stay here and eat more. If you finish, I'll buy you more."
Grace Scott spoke gently to David Thompson, then straightened her back and turned around, striding toward the door like a rooster about to go into battle.
For some reason, watching her leave, David Thompson felt an immense sense of security.
Although his mother was strong-willed, as long as he was by her side, David Thompson felt at ease. She was like a big umbrella shielding him from the wind and rain, and all the anxiety caused by previous troubles vanished in that moment.
"Heh, the lobby is going to be lively soon." David Thompson picked another yellow-green grape, popped it into his mouth, and bit down, the sweet juice bursting in his mouth.
Just as he thought this, David Thompson's body suddenly swayed, and everything around him began to change color again. "Oh no, mom coming over made me forget to think about how to fool the boss. What do I do now?"
When everything around him stabilized again, David Thompson found himself standing in the storeroom, with Daniel Thompson standing not far away, looking displeased. The other medicine guides had their heads bowed low, forming a circle.
