On the grassy field not far away, two burly orcs with tusks were wrestling shirtless. A bit farther off, two humans dressed as merchants stood under a tree talking. An elf with a tall, slender figure hurried by with a longbow on his back, followed by two troll children, their faces full of curiosity...
Alex looked at this scene with some surprise. Although he had already seen the appearances of various races in the memories of his previous self, the shock of witnessing it with his own eyes was completely different.
Powerful orcs, cunning goblins, long-lived elves... all of this suddenly felt so real, making him truly feel like he had arrived in this world.
Wanting to live a good life here with Emily, to live comfortably and leisurely, didn’t seem as simple as he had imagined. Alex raised his eyebrows, glanced back at his own restaurant, and thought: since the restaurant is located in this chaotic city, the target customers are naturally not just humans. After all, elves, dragons, and demons are all famously wealthy.
Aden Square is located in the center of the chaotic city. The city’s original builders planned the buildings around Aden Square in the shape of a crescent, encircling the round Aden Square, with the southern side left open.
Walking from one end of this crescent to the other, there are over a thousand various shops, restaurants, blacksmiths, red-light districts, arenas, magic shops... basically, any kind of shop you can find on the Nolan Continent, you can find here in Aden Square. The shopkeepers are of all races; you might walk into a restaurant and find it’s a pancake shop run by a flame demon, grilling the pancakes right in their hands.
The chaotic city was established after the peace agreement was signed, as all races sought to interact and promote cooperation. Back then, the entire continent was like a pie, sliced both vertically and horizontally, intersecting at a single point, dividing the land into territories for each race. The chaotic city was built right at that intersection point, so it’s not an exaggeration to call it the center of the continent.
And because it borders every race’s territory, it has eight city gates, allowing people of all races to enter.
In one city, orcs, humans, elves, goblins, trolls, demons, dwarves... and even the occasional dragon all coexist. This chaotic mix of residents is also the origin of the city’s name.
However, after the initial period of chaos, a mysterious organization called the Gray Temple emerged in the city, beginning to manage the city’s order. Gradually, they built the chaotic city into its current scale and structure. The gray-clad figures who walk in the shadows are the enforcers of this city.
And Alex’s restaurant is located at the very end of the crescent of Aden Square, the last shop.
Because the entrance to the square is on the other side, very few people usually come this way. Next door to the restaurant is a weapon shop, which Alex remembers is run by a dwarf. A few shops further down are all closed, with “for rent” signs posted on their doors. A bit farther still is a magic potion shop, with two birdcages hanging at the entrance, each containing a parrot still sleeping inside.
Running a restaurant here, “deserted” doesn’t even begin to describe it. For a customer to be interested enough to come in and then order a 600 copper coin Yangzhou fried rice—just thinking about those odds, Alex suddenly felt that this starting point seemed a bit tough.
Chapter 13: Pay Up! Super Fierce!
After watching at the door for a while, the few passersby did cast glances at this restaurant, whose decor was completely different from the surrounding shops, but for now, no one seemed interested in coming in to try it.
Returning to the restaurant, Alex tidied up the tables, went into the kitchen to wash the dishes, while Emily sat enthusiastically on a high stool behind the counter, playing with a blue-violet flame in her hand, muttering a bunch of random spells.
When Alex finished cleaning the kitchen and came out, he saw there were still no customers, so he sat down on the chair next to Emily to watch her play with fire.
“Father, if I throw this fireball, will it be just like a magician’s magic?” Emily suddenly turned to look at Alex and asked, raising her hand in a throwing gesture.
“No, no, no!” Alex quickly waved his hand. If that fireball was thrown, even if it didn’t burn down the restaurant, a few tables and chairs would definitely be destroyed. Given the system’s stingy nature, he wasn’t sure if the remaining 2,700 copper coins would be enough to cover the losses.
“Don’t worry, Father, I won’t really throw it.” Emily looked at Alex’s nervous expression and giggled, waving her hand to disperse the blue-violet fireball.
“If you can throw it, and hit your target accurately, then it could be called Fireball Spell.” Alex breathed a sigh of relief, thought about Emily’s question, and nodded.
“But Xiaomi can’t do that.” Emily shook her head a little uncertainly.
“That’s okay. Before you have a teacher, Father will practice with you every morning. No one is born knowing how to do it. Our Xiaomi can already conjure a fireball by herself, which is amazing. I believe you can do it.” Alex said with a smile, looking at Emily encouragingly.
“Mm-hmm, Xiaomi will work hard.” Emily nodded vigorously, then looked toward the door, a bit troubled. “But Father, why is no one coming in to eat? Your rainbow fried rice is so delicious.”
