Chapter 7

A flash of light appeared before my eyes, and I entered the world of Skyler. With a “ding,” as the first player to enter the game, I received a system random draw: Super Divine Weapon—Overlord Sword!

Of course, I was dreaming.

……

A void of mist stretched before me, and from afar came a low sigh: “Awaken, abandoned one!”

“Rustle, rustle…”

Amid the sound of earth being turned, I desperately pushed upward, and finally, with a “whoosh,” I broke through the surface. A foul, bloody stench drifted to my nose, and the person before me gave me quite a scare!

It was a figure in a black mage’s robe, but hardly human—his face and eyes were rotting, most of the flesh had fallen away, leaving only two black-and-white eyeballs rolling around, terrifying to the extreme. The hand holding the staff was nothing but bare white bones.

A necromancer!

Chapter 4: Super Big-Eared Rabbit

That was my first reaction. Hmm, I should charge up and take him down—maybe I could get that staff he’s holding, it looks pretty good.

Say it, do it!

I fumbled around, raised my fists, and was about to give the evil necromancer a good beating, but then I realized—the arms I was swinging were nothing but white bones!

“Damn!”

I stopped abruptly and looked down at my lower body. Instantly, goosebumps broke out all over me. There were two bony legs, covered by a tattered scrap of cloth!

This is bad. I reached out and pulled open my shabby pants, and my mind went blank with a “buzz.” Crap, my… my little buddy was gone too, just a pair of shiny white pelvic bones on full display.

“Hey, little bug, you’ve finally awakened!”

The necromancer stared at me, grinning, “Since that’s the case, take up your sword and embark on your journey. Fight bloodily for the rule of the Nightlings!”

“Ding~!”

System prompt: The village chief of Deadlands Newbie Village has given you a set of novice equipment, including—a rusty iron sword and a hole-ridden cloth shirt!

……

With a “ding-dong,” the equipment dropped into my inventory. I summoned my personal interface, and sure enough, there was a broken sword and a rag. The broken sword was a true newbie weapon, attack power 0-1, and the ragged shirt gave 1 point of defense.

I equipped both items and opened the stats panel. I couldn’t help but complain. I’d thought the death knight class would be super tough, but turns out it’s just as weak as the rest!

ID: Broken Spear

Class: Death Knight (Apprentice)

Level: 0

HP: 100

Attack: 1-2

Defense: 1

Magic Resist: 0

Luck: 0

……

Great, starting attack power is 1-1, and starting defense is a glorious 0. Thankfully, this ragged shirt adds 1 point of defense, or else even running into a chicken outside might get me killed!

The server had only been open for less than five minutes, and a flood of players was pouring in. It was a prime time to seize every second. After a bit of thought, I realized that running around aimlessly to level up wasn’t smart. The Deadlands I was in was also a newbie village, but unlike the others, I’d been assigned to the “villain” role!

Nightlings, as the name suggests, are spirits that roam at night, including skeleton warriors like me, as well as evil spirits, monsters, liches, and other dark beings. In short, these creatures constantly harass the villages of humans, barbarians, and shadow demons, making their lives a living hell.

As a glorious little skeleton, I strutted around the great graveyard of Deadlands, and finally, under a withered dwarf pine, I found a half-rotten barbarian. He should also be a Nightling, but he looked miserable, scratching his head and pulling out both hair and scalp.

Warden of the Deadlands, five big characters floated above his forehead.

I stepped forward and said in a deep voice, “Bro, is there anything I can help you with?”

The barbarian looked up at me and said, “Little skeleton, the human scouts have already discovered us. Deadlands is no longer our paradise. We must send a large number of abandoned dead to attack the human villages. But before that, you need to go outside the village—there’s a group of annoying big-eared rabbits harassing our companions.”

“Ding~!”

System prompt: You have accepted the quest [Kill Big-Eared Rabbits]! (Quest Level: F, Lower)

Quest details: Kill 20 big-eared rabbits and collect 5 coarse leg hairs from them to give to Warden of the Deadlands, and you will receive a reward!

……

Abandoned dead? I was a bit speechless. So, as a death knight, I didn’t belong to either of the two main factions—not the Silvermoon Alliance, nor the Nightling faction. Am I neutral? Maybe, which is good—less trouble, more leveling!

OK, time to head out!

Quests in Skyler are as rare as hair on a bald man’s head. Looking around this newbie village, it seemed there was only this one quest available.

With my broken sword, I left the graveyard. Outside was a wide forested area, and sure enough, some dark big-eared rabbits were wandering near the village. Their levels ranged from 1 to 3, and with my level 0 strength, it was going to be tough.
