Lucy White stepped in her high heels all the way to the company’s reception desk, and in just a few minutes, she was met again by Manager Foster and his secretary, who also served as his interpreter.
Her reception was still as polite as ever, with not a single flaw in her words or actions, but in Lucy White’s eyes, there was still that same look of mockery. The only reason she treated these two Chinese men with such courtesy was because of company rules and her own amusement, not because there was anything about them that deserved her respect.
“Mr. Ohnishi, we meet again!” Manager Foster shook hands with John West in a calm and composed manner. “We have fulfilled your request—here are the two crankshafts you asked for.”
“That’s impossible!” John West’s face looked as if he had been slapped, and he shouted, “How could you possibly have done it?”
John West’s exclamation and astonished expression were, to Manager Foster’s eyes and ears, the most delightful enjoyment. Even John West’s sexy secretary, whose eyes seemed to be set high on her forehead, now wore a look of utter shock—exactly the reaction that most satisfied Manager Foster.
Manager Foster sat there smiling, savoring John West’s look of disbelief, not bothering to explain, his face full of smug satisfaction.
It felt amazing! Like walking into an air-conditioned room, drenched in sweat on a scorching summer day, and drinking a glass of ice-cold cola—refreshing from the inside out.
“Mr. Wan, that joke isn’t funny at all!” John West calmed down. Something absolutely impossible—how could it have happened? This Chinese man named Wan must be playing tricks.
“Believe me, Mr. Ohnishi, I didn’t fly back and forth to Japan in just a few days just to play a joke on you.” Manager Foster said very seriously, “These are the two crankshafts you took last time, and the serial numbers on them haven’t changed.”
As the secretary translated, Manager Foster had already opened the two boxes, revealing the finished crankshafts inside. The stamped serial numbers at the top were indeed unchanged.
“I need to have them tested!” John West stared intently into Manager Foster’s eyes, trying to spot any sign of guilt, but unfortunately, he was destined to be disappointed.
“Of course!” Manager Foster made a gesture of invitation, then clasped his hands together and calmly rested them on his stomach.
“Lucy, take them for inspection immediately.” John West quickly instructed his female secretary, “Focus on tolerance, roundness, cylindricity, and coaxiality. Tell the inspection department to get me a report as soon as possible.”
“Ha’i!” Lucy White bowed quickly in response, then picked up the two boxes containing the crankshafts and hurried out of the office.
“With all due respect, Mr. Wan, I don’t mean to underestimate your company.” John West asked very seriously, “Your company doesn’t have this kind of manufacturing capability, which is also why we can’t transfer our engine production technology. Mr. Wan, where did you have these two crankshafts made?”
“No, no, no!” After hearing the translation, Manager Foster smiled and shook his head, wagging his raised finger at the same time. “Mr. Ohnishi, it’s not good manners to ask about our trade secrets so directly.”
“Sorry, I’m just curious, I didn’t mean to pry into your company’s trade secrets.” John West apologized quickly, then changed the subject: “It takes a day for a round trip, and this is only the third day. Mr. Wan, did you finish the machining in just one day?”
“If it weren’t for that student in charge of entering the parameters being so slow, you would have seen the finished product yesterday afternoon, Mr. Ohnishi.” Speaking of time, Manager Foster immediately became spirited, as if he had touched on his point of pride, but he quickly realized it was inappropriate and immediately shut his mouth.
But John West had already realized that Manager Foster must have let something slip in a moment of pride, and he was secretly delighted. He had already started recording before Manager Foster came in, so as long as he had the interpreter listen to it later, he would know what information had been revealed.
After that, Manager Foster just drank his coffee and didn’t say much more. John West wasn’t in a hurry either, patiently waiting for the test results.
In less than half an hour, Lucy White came running back to John West’s office with the inspection department’s measurement report.
Looking at the series of qualified marks for various measurements, and the detailed machining errors listed, John West could hardly believe his eyes.
“That’s impossible?” This was already the second time John West had exclaimed in astonishment.
Chapter 0011: Exoskeleton Seat (Part 1)
For the two crankshafts, the largest error was no more than 2 microns, all within the required tolerance range of plus or minus 5 microns, and the surface finish even met the company’s machining standards. Even the roundness, cylindricity, and coaxiality that John West cared about most did not exceed 1 micron—precision to the extreme.
Such machining quality was clearly not achievable by hand. Even if it were possible with enough manual labor, given Manager Foster’s timeline—subtracting a day for travel—there was at most one day to complete the work. Other than high-precision CNC machine tools, there could be no other possibility.
China has high-precision CNC machine tools now? That’s a big deal!
