Chapter 14

The middleman named Pete barked in Spanish, “Shut up and wait quietly!”

The car window was immediately rolled up. Pete ran his hands through his hair and switched to English, “This guy is going to be the death of me. Alright, now let’s talk about our business.”

Pete didn’t look like a Mexican. He waved his hand helplessly and said, “I didn’t know Sanchez was with the Zetas, really. If I had known, I wouldn’t have been the middleman. I’m sorry that Buffalo died, but my business in Tijuana is ruined too, because the Zetas will definitely come after me. Man, I’ve suffered heavy losses.”

Captain said coldly, “Your intel was inaccurate. You got my brother killed and almost got all of us killed.”

Pete sighed, turned around, opened the car door, and took a plastic bag from the driver’s seat, handing it straight to Captain. “The remaining payment is fifty thousand, but here’s a hundred and fifty thousand, man. This is everything I have.”

Captain took the plastic bag, opened it for a glance, then casually handed it to Cap beside him.

Pete pleaded, “Man, I admit the problem was caused by bad intel. As soon as I got your call last night, I started preparing to run. I can’t stay in Tijuana anymore. This is all the money I can come up with now. If you think it’s not enough, all the equipment is yours too, okay?”

Captain thought for a moment, then said in a deep voice, “I don’t want your equipment. Cap, give him his gear back.”

Cap immediately went to open the trunk, then started taking out the bulletproof vests, rifles, pistols, radios, and other combat gear they’d worn last night, placing them on the ground one by one. Seeing Cap’s actions, Raymond Brooks also began unloading equipment from the car.

At this moment, Captain opened the back door of another car and said softly, “Buffalo’s body.”

Pete spread his hands. “Sorry, my apologies.”

Captain closed the car door, then said very seriously, “That’s it. This matter won’t be spread. You can go do your business somewhere else.”

Pete immediately said, “Thank you.”

Captain nodded, then after watching Raymond Brooks and Cap finish unloading all the equipment, he suddenly said, “Are you planning to take guns that have killed drug dealers over there?”

Raymond Brooks was stunned, then rather reluctantly pulled the pistol from his waistband, removed the magazine, cleared the chamber, and carefully wiped the gun with his clothes, even wiping the magazine several times.

Pete couldn’t help but say, “Isn’t that a bit much?”

Raymond Brooks pretended not to hear, and did the same with the submachine gun, wiping even the magazines several times before finally placing the gun on the ground.

What a pity, the submachine gun never even fired a shot.

Once everything was unloaded, Captain nodded at Pete, then waved, “Let’s go.”

The group got back in the cars. This time, Captain and Raymond Brooks got into one car, leaving only Joey to drive the car carrying Buffalo’s body behind them.

They turned around and drove off. Raymond Brooks looked back and could only see Pete standing motionless behind a pile of combat gear, staring at them.

So Raymond Brooks couldn’t help but say, “We’re just leaving like this? Won’t that middleman get into trouble?”

“I appreciate your caution and attention to detail, but there’s no need to worry too much about Pete. He made a mistake this time, but he’s not stupid. He knows which mistakes can be made and which absolutely can’t. Here, take this.”

Raymond Brooks turned his head and saw Captain toss a phone onto his lap.

It was the phone Captain had been using. Brooks looked at Captain suspiciously and asked, “What do you mean, giving this to me?”

Captain said calmly, “The SIM card’s already been tossed. You handle the phone yourself.”

There was a video of Raymond Brooks taking out Sanchez on the phone. That was Raymond Brooks’s leverage, but now, Captain just handed the phone over to him.

Raymond Brooks suddenly understood, and immediately said, “Thank you!”

Captain wagged a finger, then said very calmly, “Now let’s talk about your job. I know you’re curious, so I’ll keep it simple. I run a security company in Los Angeles. Some of our clients are Mexicans, so I need someone who can speak Spanish to handle those clients. Originally, Buffalo was in charge of that, but he’s dead, and you…”

After a moment of silence, Captain continued, “There are plenty of people who can speak Spanish, but your outstanding performance last night impressed me. Maybe you don’t have much experience, but I think you’re a natural for this line of work, which is why I’m inviting you to join our company.”

A natural for PMC work? Raymond Brooks hadn’t thought so before. After all, he only knew this industry existed, but wasn’t really familiar with it.

“I’m willing to give you this job, but you don’t have any military experience, so you can’t take on combat tasks. You’ll just be a translator, so the salary… two thousand dollars a month.”

Two thousand dollars a month—Raymond Brooks thought that was a pretty high salary. Well, when you’re poor, you can’t afford to be picky.
