Chapter 16

The counselor felt that he absolutely had to say a few words now, so he coughed lightly and said, “Um, some students still need to pay attention! Today is only the first day of school, there’s plenty of time.”

Everyone was speechless, sighing that college teachers really were nothing like those in high school. Meanwhile, Ethan Bennett and Grace Bennett wished they could find a hole to crawl into.

Ethan Bennett rubbed his arm and glared at Grace Bennett, asking, “What are you doing?”

Grace Bennett said, “Are you an idiot? Using your power here—your aura is so strong, even ordinary people can sense something’s off.”

Ethan Bennett exclaimed, “I’m that powerful?”

Grace Bennett was momentarily speechless.

Volume One, Chapter Eleven: Physical Fitness Test

After that, there was nothing more to say. After walking a lap around the campus avenues and alleys, it was nearly lunchtime. Everyone was so hungry their eyes were turning green, and the sound of stomachs growling echoed through the group like wolves howling.

At the counselor’s word to dismiss, everyone rushed toward the cafeteria in a flash. After wandering around all morning, no one had figured out where tomorrow’s classes would be, but everyone had memorized the locations of the various cafeterias on campus.

Ethan Bennett had also rejoined his dorm group, and the four of them made up a table in the cafeteria. Just as they finished getting their food, a crisp bell rang from a nearby teaching building, and in an instant, the cafeteria became as lively as a stadium packed with ten thousand people. Countless upperclassmen, looking like beggars, stormed in banging bowls and plates, making you think they came to school just for this meal.

The four chatted as they ate. When the topic of the afternoon’s physical fitness test came up, Eric Brooks looked miserable. He resembled a bean sprout, and while it was unclear if his mind was simple, his limbs were clearly underdeveloped. Ethan Bennett said in confusion, “Isn’t the physical fitness test just to see if any freshmen are outstanding in some area, so they can be recruited to compete for the school? It’s not a PE standards exam, what are you afraid of?”

Eric Brooks said gloomily, “We’re all new classmates, and there are so many girls. If I do that badly, it’ll be so embarrassing!”

David Thompson nodded, “Embarrassing, really embarrassing.”

Brian Young stiffened his neck and said, “It’s fine, boys and girls will definitely be separated. It’s not like we’ll be racing together!”

This reassurance was clearly effective, and Eric Brooks immediately perked up.

After a quick meal, the four returned to the dorm. On the way, Ethan Bennett pulled Brian Young aside and quietly asked, “How many people in our department do you think have trained?”

Brian Young said, “Four. Besides us two, there’s one in Class One and one in Class Two. How many did you sense?”

When Ethan Bennett heard that Brian Young hadn’t noticed Grace Bennett, he realized that girl was really something. He didn’t expose her and just nodded, “Same as you.”

Brian Young said disdainfully, “I thought you’d be able to sense more than me!”

Ethan Bennett said a bit sheepishly, “Maybe there aren’t any more!”

Up ahead, David Thompson turned around, “You two hurry up! Why are you dawdling?”

The two responded and quickly caught up.

In the afternoon, everyone arrived at the sports field on time. They saw the four from the PE department from the morning, all in sportswear, each with a stopwatch hanging around their neck, a whistle attached to one end, and a hard-covered notebook in hand, looking very professional as they waited for the freshmen on the track. Behind them, a few others in sportswear were fiddling with shot puts, tape measures, and the like.

The test wasn’t complicated: a 100-meter dash, a long jump, and a shot put. Anyone who thought they were good at long-distance running could volunteer to show off. Afterwards, those who could play soccer would sign up, and the freshmen soccer team would be formed right then.

As soon as the arrangements were made, Brian Young stiffened his neck, stepped out of line, showed off the bruise on his neck, then grinned mischievously and went to relax under a tree.

Ethan Bennett cursed him inwardly. At that moment, someone came to lead the group across the field to the opposite track for the 100-meter test.

At the starting line, a male student in shorts and a T-shirt, wearing professional running shoes, was warming up. Ethan Bennett was surprised, wondering who this big shot was, when a senior from the PE department introduced him: “This is the vice president of our student union’s sports department, the 100-meter sprint king of our Chinese department, and the captain of the department soccer team.”

The guy nodded to everyone and said, “In a moment, run with me, and be sure to give it your fastest speed.”

Before anyone could react, Eric Brooks, the bean sprout, was already annoyed. He sidled up to Ethan Bennett and muttered, “What a show-off. He knows no one here can outrun him.”

Ethan Bennett smiled, “He’s the sprint king, let him be.”

Unexpectedly, the vice president suddenly looked over, “That student over there, what did you say?”

Ethan Bennett replied calmly, “Nothing.”

But the guy glared and said, “I wasn’t asking you.”

Ethan Bennett was taken aback, wondering if this was really a university or some gangster den—how could someone be so arrogant? The guy kept staring at Eric Brooks, and Ethan Bennett got annoyed and added, “He didn’t say anything, just that you definitely can’t run faster than me.”

Everyone was shocked and looked at Ethan Bennett and Eric Brooks. Eric Brooks was completely confused: “Did I say that?”

At this point, the vice president actually put on a magnanimous air, smiled slightly, and said, “If you can run faster than me, that’s great. You can bring more honor to our department.”
