Chapter 14

“Come on, do you really think you’re something just because you have a loud voice? Damn! Still holding that torch, planning to set a fire? Aren’t your arms tired from holding it up all this time? So many brothers came to support you, all waiting to see you start the fire. You can’t let them down, can you? If you’re going to set the fire, hurry up and do it!”

Steven Carter bit his lip. At that moment, a burly man in black squeezed through from behind, pushing the people in front so hard that one of them stumbled and bumped right into Steven Carter’s arm. The torch in his hand slipped and, with a whoosh, flew out of his grasp.

Everyone’s eyes were fixed on the torch as it soared high into the air and finally landed on the thatched roof of the garden pavilion. The roof was covered in straw, and after being baked by the sun all day, it caught fire instantly. With a loud whoosh, flames erupted, and in the blink of an eye, the pavilion was ablaze.

The group from the Tang family was dumbfounded. Steven Carter roared, “Which bastard bumped into me?”

The people behind all looked at each other, but no one dared admit it was them.

Someone shouted, “The pavilion’s on fire… the pavilion’s on fire…”

Little William glared fiercely at Steven Carter: “You really set it on fire?”

Steven Carter said, “I didn’t!” He looked at his big brother, hoping for some backup. John Carter misunderstood his intention: “I didn’t do it either! The torch was in your hand, it has nothing to do with me!” Damn, you can’t even count on your own brother.

Although the pavilion was burning, since it was by the pond in the garden, the fire shouldn’t spread to the other buildings in the residence.

John Carter knew that setting fire to the Minister’s residence was no small matter, so he quickly ordered his men to put out the fire to prevent it from spreading. Meanwhile, the Hu family’s servants rushed over as well. Howard Hoover, who had been beaten black and blue, shouted loudly, “The Tang family set the fire! The Tang family set the fire!”

The scene was in total chaos. Just then, someone shouted, “Big brother… people from Jingzhao Prefecture are here…”

Robert Bennett wasn’t scared at all now. He didn’t think the young master was all that impressive; instead, he felt that the most dazzling and imposing person on the scene was himself. It was he who had a knife to Grace Carter’s neck, intimidating over a hundred strong men into not daring to make a move. Everyone has a desire for control and self-satisfaction. As Robert Bennett held Grace Carter hostage, he couldn’t help but feel a bit smug. Waving his knife, he shouted, “Why aren’t you surrendering already?!”

He accidentally blocked half of Little William’s body again. Little William glared at him in extreme annoyance. Damn, blocking my shot again—can’t you tell who’s the main character and who’s the sidekick? This kind of upstaging lackey really has no sense.

Fortunately, Robert Bennett quickly realized and hurriedly pulled Grace Carter back. Just then, a dark figure shot down from the rooftop behind them. By the time Robert Bennett realized what was happening, a sword scabbard had already struck his wrist, making him cry out in pain as his knife clattered to the ground.

A graceful figure leapt down from the rooftop—over ten meters high—landing as lightly as a bird. She wore a black hero’s cap, a purple open-front brocade robe with cloud patterns, a red warrior’s outfit underneath, and black thin-soled boots. Her skin was fair, her sword-like brows slanted into her temples, and her bright eyes were as cold as autumn water. Dashing and valiant, she moved like a startled dragon. This was none other than the top-ranked female constable of Jingzhao Prefecture, Helen Morgan, who spun several times in the air as she descended.

The onlookers all cheered in unison.

Although Little William had to admit her somersault was impressive, he couldn’t help but wonder: are all the women here trained in gymnastics? Almost every one of them makes a few front flips and a 360-degree spin when they appear, as if afraid others won’t know they can do somersaults. Show-offs, just way too showy.

Helen Morgan’s moves might be flashy, but her speed was no joke. Before Robert Bennett could react, she had already kicked him away from Grace Carter, pulled Grace Carter to her side with her left hand to protect her, and pointed her sword at Little William with her right. Originally, Little William should have had enough time to escape when she jumped down, but seeing how easily Robert Bennett was taken out, his first instinct wasn’t to run, but to try to seize control of Grace Carter. In the current chaos, only by controlling Grace Carter could he intimidate the others and keep the Tang family from acting rashly.

Little William’s strategy wasn’t wrong, but things went awry in execution. First, he overestimated Thomas Bennett’s abilities. Second, he thought this dashing, cross-dressing girl was all show and lacked real skill. Third, he believed he could firmly control Grace Carter in the time he had. But when he actually made his move, Little William realized he was dead wrong—he had overestimated himself.

Robert Bennett hadn’t posed any obstacle to Helen Morgan at all. As soon as Little William’s hand touched the corner of Grace Carter’s clothes, she was snatched away by Helen Morgan, whose gleaming sword was instantly at Little William’s throat. The cold, menacing blade made Little William instinctively shut his eyes.

At this point, Robert Bennett climbed up from the ground, his face bruised and swollen. Seeing his young master captured, he charged forward with a shout, but Helen Morgan didn’t even look back—she kicked behind her, landing squarely on his chest. Robert Bennett let out an even more earth-shattering scream than before and sprawled out on the ground, limbs splayed in all directions.
