Chapter 15

Helen Morgan stared coldly at Little William, but Little William showed no sign of fear. Smiling, he looked at this spirited girl dressed as a man and said, “Hey beauty, who are you?”

Chapter 8: Turning Black into White (Part 2)

Helen Morgan said, “I am Helen Morgan, an eighth-rank guard under Lord Hong of the Jingzhao Prefecture!”

As soon as Little William realized the other party was a female officer, he immediately relaxed. Since she was a policewoman, she wouldn’t dare act recklessly. He reached out, gently flicked the blade with his finger, and said, “Could you move your sword away a bit? If it accidentally goes off, that wouldn’t be good.”

Of course, Helen Morgan didn’t know what “goes off” meant. She replied coldly, “As a citizen of Da Kang, the son of a court official, blessed by imperial grace, you should set an example. Yet you shamelessly commit the crime of abducting a woman in broad daylight. Do you admit your guilt?”

Hearing this barrage of accusations from Helen Morgan, Little William immediately realized this girl was a crooked cop. Damn, do you even know what’s really going on? You just dump all the blame on me the moment you show up—what did I ever do to you? Little William figured this Murong girl either had a grudge against his father or was close to the Tang family, which explained her obvious bias.

Little William said, “In broad daylight, you break into a private residence, carry a deadly weapon, and threaten the life of a law-abiding citizen like me. Do you admit your guilt?”

Helen Morgan replied, “I am a constable! Eliminating crime is my duty.”

Little William said, “So being a constable makes you special? Do you have a search warrant? Do you know what kind of place the Minister’s residence is? You think you can just come and go as you please?” This question really stumped Helen Morgan. The term “search warrant” was unfamiliar to her, but she did know about arrest warrants. Little William wasn’t wrong— the Murong and Tang families were old friends, and Helen Morgan and Grace Carter were close confidantes. So when she heard Grace Carter had been abducted, she rushed over immediately, not thinking to first apply for an arrest warrant from Lord Hong of Jingzhao Prefecture. For an ordinary case, the procedure wouldn’t matter much, but today she had barged into the Minister’s residence. The Minister of Revenue, Hu Buwei, was a third-rank official highly favored by the emperor. Even her own superior, Jingzhao Prefect Hong Baiqi, was only a subordinate third-rank and would have to show deference to Hu Buwei. She suddenly realized she might have made a huge blunder today.

Little William had been watching Helen Morgan’s expression all along. Seeing the hesitation in her eyes, he guessed that his words had shaken her. Did she not know that he also happened to have a master’s degree in psychology?

Little William carefully pinched the blade, slowly leaned back to move his neck away from the sword tip, then took a step back.

Helen Morgan’s beautiful eyes flickered, her mind wavering. But her main purpose today was to rescue someone; the rest could wait. After all, the monk may run, but the temple remains. She pulled the cloth from Grace Carter’s mouth and used her sword to cut the ropes binding Grace Carter. Grace Carter was burning with shame and anger. As soon as she was freed, she snatched the long sword from Helen Morgan’s hand and shouted, “Scoundrel! I’ll kill you!” She immediately charged at Little William.

Seeing things take a bad turn, Little William turned and ran, heading toward the group of Hu family servants. Not only did they not come to his aid, but when they saw Grace Carter charging over with a weapon, they scattered in all directions in terror. Little William was furious—what a bunch of cowardly good-for-nothings! They eat and live off the Hu family, but when he needed their protection, they ran faster than rabbits. Damn, not a shred of professional ethics. Little William’s four months of training weren’t for nothing; when he ran, he was as swift as the wind. And today, without the hindrance of a long robe, just wearing shorts, he strode out in long, graceful steps—leaving Grace Carter behind was a piece of cake.

When it came to running, Grace Carter was no match for Little William. But she knew lightness skill. Seeing she couldn’t catch up on foot, she tapped her toes on the ground and suddenly soared into the air, flipping forward and spinning not just 360 degrees, but—wait—720 degrees.

As Little William ran, he looked up and saw the Tang girl about to catch up. Damn, flying really is faster than running. Cheating! This is definitely cheating! Seeing Grace Carter swooping down like a hawk diving for a rabbit, and judging by her furious, humiliated face, he could tell she’d completely lost her mind. When a woman loses her mind, she’s capable of anything. A wise man knows when to back down.

Servants, servants! Little William noticed that bunch of servants were running even faster than he was. But at least one of them was loyal—at the critical moment, Robert Bennett staggered up from the ground, still dazed. He wasn’t trying to sacrifice himself for his master; he just happened to get up at that moment, hoping to slip away from trouble. But his tall, hefty frame made him the perfect shield. Little William darted behind him and shoved him forward.

Robert Bennett was still groggy, but when he saw Grace Carter charging down from the air with a sword, he finally understood why the young master had pushed him. He let out a miserable scream, using every ounce of strength he had: “Damn you—” Although he was shouting at Grace Carter, the curse was really meant for Little William. I’m just a servant, I sold my labor, not my life—how could you be so despicable, pushing me out to block a sword for you?
