Chapter 19

Although Jason Carter was teaching their favorite survival class, the students didn’t show him any genuine gratitude at all.

Jason Carter thought, maybe if I teach a few more classes, the students will be grateful?

The town school usually let out at 4 p.m., and inside the refuge stronghold, the day started at six in the morning, with a bell ringing every two hours to mark the time. Normally, David Bolton never ran overtime.

But today, in order to earn the students’ gratitude, Jason Carter practically poured out all his wilderness survival experience, and this lecture went on until five o’clock...

It was already late autumn, and by five it was almost dark. The students stared at him, thinking, this guy can really talk, can’t he...

At this point, even David Bolton couldn’t take it anymore and went out to the yard to chop a cabbage and start cooking.

One student finally couldn’t hold back: “Sir... teacher, if you don’t end class soon, it’ll be dark, and the town won’t be safe.”

This student was actually a bit afraid of this notorious tough guy in town, so he didn’t dare to speak harshly in front of him.

Jason Carter was stunned for a moment, thinking, fine, if you don’t want to thank me, whatever, but now you even want the teacher to end class. Still, he was sensible enough to know that safety comes first, so after glancing at the sky, Jason Carter helplessly waved his hand: “Class dismissed.”

“Thank you, teacher!”

“Thank you, teacher!”

The students swarmed out of the classroom, and two of them even said thank you to Jason Carter just for the words “class dismissed.” They were truly grateful! If class didn’t end soon, they were going to throw up!

Suddenly, Jason Carter saw that there were actually two more gratitude coins in his palace, and he was instantly overjoyed.

He had no idea why the students were grateful; he just thought he’d taught well!

Jason Carter thought, looks like my efforts weren’t wasted after all. After teaching for so long, the students are still grateful to me.

Brian Cooper said with a dark face, “Can you not run overtime in the future?”

Before Jason Carter could reply, David Bolton came in carrying his food, eating as he walked. He carefully considered his words and said, “Jason, I know you love the education profession, but running overtime for so long really isn’t good. Besides, what if you wear yourself out?”

Jason Carter wasn’t having it. This isn’t just running overtime, this is about money, this is about the students’ genuine gratitude!

“No way,” Jason Carter said righteously, “I’m willing to dedicate my life to education. Teaching a bit longer is nothing!”

“Ahem!” David Bolton almost choked on Jason Carter, but seeing him like this, he really couldn’t be bothered to say more: “Fine.”

Those two students who said thank you still didn’t know how much trouble their “thank you, teacher” had brought upon themselves.

There’s an idiom that explains this phenomenon: disaster comes from the mouth...

...

On the way back, Brian Cooper was sulking and ignored Jason Carter. Originally, after school, he could have gone to stroll around the town with Jason Carter, but now it was all wasted.

As they passed the pawnshop at the city gate, Brian Cooper suddenly tugged on Jason Carter’s sleeve. He pointed at the pawnshop, and Jason Carter saw Miss Emily inside, seemingly talking to the shopkeeper.

Jason Carter brought Brian Cooper a bit closer, and they heard Miss Emily say to the shopkeeper, “These earrings are really valuable. Can’t you give me a bit more?”

The shopkeeper gave Miss Emily a flirtatious look and smiled, “Actually, you don’t need to pawn anything. Why bother...”

He hadn’t finished speaking before he shut up, because he saw Jason Carter walking into the pawnshop. Last night’s events had already spread throughout the town, and everyone knew that Emily Thompson now had a close relationship with Jason Carter.

Just because it was an era of survival of the fittest didn’t mean everyone became fierce. In fact, in any era, there are cowards and tough guys, and the tough guys usually do pretty well.

The shopkeeper was a coward, only daring to bully the weak and fear the strong. The person Jason Carter killed last night was a notorious tough guy in town, so now Jason Carter was the toughest of the tough...

The shopkeeper’s eyes darted around as he pretended to drink water, unsure if Jason Carter had heard what he just said.

Jason Carter took 620 yuan from his pocket and stuffed it into Miss Emily’s hand: “You don’t need to sell anything. This is for the three anti-inflammatory pills from last night.”

Emily Thompson had no source of income now, so she could only live off her savings, but Jason Carter couldn’t bear to see her in such a tough spot.

Emily Thompson tried to give the money back to Jason Carter, but Jason Carter said, “I was planning to buy medicine anyway, so just take it. It’s not that I don’t want to owe you a favor, but from now on, let’s not be so formal.”

Emily Thompson was stunned for a while: “What do you mean by that...”

Last year, Jason Carter had narrowly escaped from a pack of wolves. He’d never told anyone how he managed to get away, but after he returned, it was truly thanks to the medicine Emily Thompson gave him that he survived. Without those antibiotics, he probably wouldn’t have made it.

So what he owed Emily Thompson wasn’t just a few pills, but his life.

Jason Carter said seriously to Miss Emily, “Don’t worry, as long as I have meat to eat, you’ll have soup to drink!”
