Chapter 2

What left Owen Sutton completely baffled was that among the two people on the sofa, one was a tall, blond, blue-eyed, white-skinned foreigner. This foreigner was not young—at least fifty or sixty years old—with a full beard that had turned snow white, but his burly frame was upright and imposing, exuding great authority.

Without a doubt, the middle-aged policeman was the chief of the police station. Sure enough, he was the first to reach out to Owen Sutton and said, “You must be Mr. Owen Sutton? I am George Clark, chief of the Shuanghe Street Police Station in Luoshan District. Nice to meet you.”

Having been tormented by the police for a while, Owen Sutton quickly shook George Clark’s outstretched hand, nodding and bowing as he introduced himself.

After George Clark and Owen Sutton let go, the middle-aged man who had been sitting on the sofa stood up, shook his hand, and said, “Mr. Qin, hello, I am Samuel Thompson from the Intermediate People’s Court of Haidao City. This is Mr. Sherman Auerbach, a renowned lawyer from the Canadian Famingde Law Firm.”

After the introductions, the old foreigner, who had been eyeing everyone like a hawk, asked in English, “Hello, Mr. Owen Sutton, do you know Henry Sutton?”

Samuel Thompson was just about to translate, but Owen Sutton instinctively replied in fluent English, “Henry Sutton? That’s my second granduncle, um, my grandfather’s second older brother.”

The old foreigner, Auerbach, nodded and asked again, “Then you should have a Heart of Poseidon on you—a small blue pendant, very beautiful. May I see it?”

Owen Sutton furrowed his brows, not sure what this old foreigner was up to, but he still unbuttoned the top of his shirt and pulled out a deep blue heart-shaped pendant on a red string.

Auerbach reached out to take the Heart of Poseidon, then turned to George Clark and said, “Sir, may I borrow a paper cup from your office?”

With a quick phone call, George Clark had the logistics staff bring over the highest-grade crystal glass.

Auerbach filled the glass with water and placed the Heart of Poseidon inside. Instantly, the entire glass turned the same deep blue as the pendant. Auerbach flicked his wrist, causing ripples on the water’s surface, and it actually looked as if ocean waves were surging inside!

Everyone was dumbfounded. Even Owen Sutton had no idea that the little pendant he’d always worn had such magical effects!

After all this, Auerbach said solemnly, “Mr. Owen Sutton, hello, I am Sherman Auerbach, a senior lawyer at Famingde Law Firm. On behalf of Mr. Henry Sutton, I am here to deliver his will to you. In addition, I will now announce his inheritance to you…”

Auerbach opened the will and said, “From this moment on, you—Mr. Henry Sutton’s eldest grandson, Mr. Owen Sutton—will inherit Mr. Henry Sutton’s Daqin Fishery in Farewell Town, St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada! According to the Royal Bank of Canada’s assessment, the fishery is valued at 42 million Canadian dollars, which is 233.1 million RMB!”

Owen Sutton’s heart pounded wildly. After finally calming himself, he stammered, “Mr. Auerbach, you’re not joking, are you? My second granduncle left me an inheritance worth 233 million?”

Auerbach nodded to confirm, then went on to explain a few more things, such as how he was now Owen Sutton’s personal lawyer and that Owen Sutton needed to go to Canada as soon as possible to complete the inheritance transfer and related matters.

With George Clark and Samuel Thompson as witnesses, Owen Sutton signed the inheritance acceptance document, then left the police station with Samuel Thompson and Auerbach, heading to his rental apartment.

When he arrived at his small apartment, he was shocked to find a pile of belongings outside the door. Upon closer inspection, it was all his luggage—mainly bedding, books, and his computer.

Just then, the landlord came out, saw Owen Sutton, and with a ‘click’ locked the door, saying coldly, “You’re back? Good, let me make things clear. Did you do something bad out there? Otherwise, why would the police come looking for you?”

Owen Sutton was about to explain, but the landlord continued with a cold face, “No need to say anything. Take your stuff and get out. I won’t rent my place to someone like you.”

All at once, Owen Sutton snapped back to reality.

Now Owen Sutton was truly furious. The landlord was being utterly unreasonable—he really deserved a beating!

However, glancing back, Owen Sutton caught sight of Auerbach with his briefcase and suddenly had an idea: he remembered a common scene from American TV shows and Hollywood movies—when in trouble, let the lawyer handle it.

So, Owen Sutton calmed down, found Auerbach, briefly explained the landlord’s misdeeds, and said, “Mr. Lawyer, I’ll leave the rest to you. Let this scoundrel see the power of the law.”

After listening, Auerbach smiled slightly, took out his phone, and snapped a few photos of the luggage outside the door and the locked entrance.

Owen Sutton found the previous rental contract. Auerbach looked it over, then stepped forward and said to the landlord, “Hello, sir. I am Mr. Owen Sutton’s lawyer. I believe your actions have infringed upon my client’s rights. I am now filing a lawsuit against you. See you in court.”
