Chapter 8

At that time, John Stewart's cruise ship was passing through the Bermuda waters when they happened to come across a cruise liner that had accidentally run aground and was about to sink. Naturally, in such a situation, they couldn't just stand by and do nothing. Under John Stewart's command, all five hundred-plus people on that cruise liner were rescued, and this pendant was given to John Stewart as a gift by one of the rescued passengers to thank the captain.

That passenger was a very famous meteorite collector, and quite wealthy as well. However, when he was escaping from the cruise liner, he couldn't bring anything with him, so he gave the pendant he was wearing around his neck to John Stewart.

According to the collector, he had obtained this pendant thirty years ago while chasing a meteor shower that had landed on Earth. He found it in a desert. Strangely enough, when the man saw a basketball-sized meteorite on the sand and reached out to touch it, the entire meteorite disintegrated into particles even finer than sand, scattering everywhere. In the center of the meteorite, this object was left behind.

After bringing this small piece of meteorite back, the collector ran all sorts of tests on it, but no matter how he analyzed it, he couldn't determine its properties—not even whether it was metallic.

Although the thing wasn't much to look at, since it was so hard to come by, the collector threaded it onto a string and wore it around his neck for decades. If he hadn't been rescued by John Stewart with nothing else on him, he probably wouldn't have been willing to give it away.

John Stewart, however, didn't care much for the thing. After returning home, he just tossed it to his son. Nancy Stewart thought wearing a pendant around his neck was pretty stylish, so he kept it on ever since. Now that he's short on cash, he can't help but set his sights on this item.

"This thing is supposed to be a meteorite, but I doubt anyone would believe it. Dad was probably conned," Nancy Stewart said with a wry smile as he fiddled with the pendant in his hand. The thing was neither gold nor iron, and didn't resemble a stone at all. He'd even taken it to the antique market for appraisal, and the verdict he got was just four words: "worthless scrap metal."

"Forget it. If it really comes to it, I'll ask Mr. Carter for help in a few days." Nancy Stewart hung the pendant back around his neck. His little sister's tuition wasn't an unsolvable problem. With his relationship with David Carter, borrowing tens of thousands of yuan for a year or so wouldn't be an issue. It's just that Nancy Stewart was used to being independent and didn't want to ask others for help unless he absolutely had to.

"Xiaofan, Nancy Stewart, I'm back!" A crisp shout interrupted Nancy Stewart's thoughts. The door was pushed open from outside, and a girl about 1.7 meters tall bounced in, heading straight for Nancy Stewart.

"Call me 'brother,' you little rascal." Nancy Stewart pushed his sister aside and said grumpily, "How old are you now, still bouncing around like that? Acting all crazy—how are you ever going to get married?"

"Hmph, there are plenty of guys at school chasing after me. I get love letters every day. How could I possibly not get married?" Emily Stewart giggled, wrinkled her nose, and ran straight to the kitchen, shouting, "The cafeteria food at school is just awful. You're the best, brother. I look forward to this meal at home every week to recharge!"

"Who in their right mind would chase after you? I'm telling you, you need to focus on your studies and not get any funny ideas." Nancy Stewart put on a stern face, but his heart skipped a beat. With Dad not around, he had to keep a close eye on his sister—no early romances allowed.

"I know, I wouldn't even look at those little brats," Emily Stewart snorted, lifting the pot lid.

To be fair, even though she was a bit wild, Emily Stewart was very pretty. Not to mention her height of 1.7 meters, her figure was already fully developed. She had an oval face, willow-leaf eyebrows, bright sparkling eyes, and a high nose bridge. She looked five or six tenths like Nancy Stewart. The Su family genes were really something—if this brother and sister walked down the street together, they'd definitely be a sight to behold.

Nancy Stewart sighed. His sister was great in every way, except that growing up with him in the countryside—climbing trees for bird eggs and catching loaches in the river—had made her a bit wild. Most men probably wouldn't be able to handle her.

"The chicken soup is just right—don't burn yourself. I haven't shredded the chicken yet, what's your rush?" Nancy Stewart followed her into the kitchen and gave her a light smack on the head. "You little foodie, if only you put as much effort into studying as you do into eating."

Emily Stewart's grades were decent, but only slightly above average in her class—not exactly a top student. Compared to Nancy Stewart, she was far behind, which made John Stewart feel sorry for his son. With Nancy Stewart's grades, if he repeated a year, he could easily get into a top university. But Nancy Stewart had always been determined—once he made up his mind, not even John Stewart could change it.

"Hehe, I'm just lucky. I can get into a prestigious university without even studying," Emily Stewart said, shrinking her head. But then she frowned and said, "Brother, a hundred thousand yuan a year—this tuition is way too expensive. Maybe I should just take the regular college entrance exam. With my current grades, I could get into a first-tier university, no problem."
