Chapter 14

“What exactly are you, and why are you impersonating Senior Brother Lincoln?” Diana White frowned and spoke again when she saw Henry Lincoln remain silent.

“What did you say? It’s way too noisy here, not the right place to talk. How about we wait until the recruitment conference is over, then go to my place and have a proper chat?” Henry Lincoln would never admit here that he wasn’t Edward Lincoln.

As long as he didn’t admit it, no matter what Diana White said, he still had room to maneuver.

If he admitted it here and Diana White had bad intentions—like recording him or something—then he’d have no chance to argue, and he’d really be finished.

Diana White glanced at Henry Lincoln and said nothing more.

While the two of them were speaking in low voices, on the other side, Charles Quinn and David Warren were also whispering privately.

“Looks like we were probably wrong—Edward Lincoln hasn’t left the base after all,” Charles Quinn said, glancing at the very close and whispering Henry Lincoln and Diana White.

David Warren frowned and said, “With that move he just pulled, aside from the Lin brothers, there really aren’t many in the Lin family who could do it. Even if someone else could, it’s impossible for them to look so much like Edward Lincoln. Still, I feel like something’s off.”

“What’s off?” Charles Quinn asked.

David Warren glanced in Henry Lincoln’s direction and shook his head. “I can’t say exactly what’s off. But since there’s such news, even if Edward Lincoln didn’t leave, there must be some issue.”

Charles Quinn also looked toward Henry Lincoln, then lowered his voice: “It doesn’t matter. Isn’t there a segment coming up where our three families show off our strength? We’ll test him then.”

“With the speed he just showed, the regular alloy-class bio-creatures we prepared probably won’t be enough, right?” David Warren mused.

“That’s why we need to switch it up,” Charles Quinn said confidently. “I just got a rare alloy-class pet recently—perfect for testing him.”

“Will an alloy-class be enough?” David Warren frowned.

“Other alloy-class pets wouldn’t work, but mine definitely will. As long as we set it up right, unless he really is Edward Lincoln, even if Old Newton steps in, it won’t work. The other alloy-class members of the Lin family are even less likely,” Charles Quinn said with confidence.

“What kind of pet?” David Warren was curious—what kind of pet could make Charles Quinn so confident?

“Have you ever heard of an alloy-class Super-Speed Gunslinger?” Charles Quinn asked.

David Warren was first shocked, then delighted. “You mean the one with a speed stat of twenty, known as the fastest alloy-class Super-Speed Gunslinger?”

“That’s right, that very Super-Speed Gunslinger,” Charles Quinn nodded with a smile.

“That’s perfect! Let the Super-Speed Gunslinger be his opponent. Unless he really is Edward Lincoln, with all the restrictions in place, he’s bound to slip up,” David Warren said, overjoyed.

During the three families’ strength demonstration, no equipment or gene-mutated pets are allowed—only one’s own gene-mutation powers can be used.

Barehanded, with the third master of the Lin family not in the base, aside from Edward Lincoln, probably no one could easily handle the Super-Speed Gunslinger.

Although Henry Lincoln’s speed just now was already impressive, in David Warren and Charles Quinn’s eyes, it was still far behind the Super-Speed Gunslinger. Competing in speed was simply impossible.

Even the real Edward Lincoln would probably have a hard time going head-to-head in speed with the Super-Speed Gunslinger, and would have to win by other means.

Among alloy-class creatures, the Super-Speed Gunslinger is the top speed-type gene-mutated creature—almost nothing is faster.

“But you saw it too—there’s a good chance that guy really is Edward Lincoln. If he is, my Super-Speed Gunslinger will be like meat buns thrown to a dog—gone for good. You know how rare the Super-Speed Gunslinger is… its value…” Charles Quinn didn’t finish, but his meaning was clear: if he was to bring out the Super-Speed Gunslinger, David Warren would have to share the risk.

“We’re in this together. If anything happens to the Super-Speed Gunslinger, we’ll both take responsibility,” David Warren didn’t hesitate, giving Charles Quinn reassurance.

“Then it’s settled,” Charles Quinn said, making the final decision.

The recruitment conference proceeded in an orderly fashion. The gene-mutators each demonstrated their abilities—not just to gain fame, but mainly to show off their skills to the three great families of the Xuan Bird Base.

The stronger they were, the better treatment and benefits they could get. If all three families took notice, they might even land a sky-high contract.

Of course, the gene-mutators also had the right to choose which family to join—they didn’t have to decide on the spot.

Xuan Bird Base was just a small base, with not much talent. The recruitment conference, held every six months, only brought in a dozen or so new gene-mutators. Adding in some veterans rejoining, there were only thirty or forty people. Of those, only four or five could catch the eyes of the three great families. The only truly outstanding one was an alloy-class gene-mutator named George Webb.
