Chapter 4

At the fifth turn, I had no intention of accelerating at all. Before I even got close, I drifted out, sped up, and the car nearly brushed against the Ferrari, completing an extremely dangerous overtake. Mud splattered all over the Ferrari’s windshield.

I could even hear the angry curses of the guy in the Ferrari behind us. 34D, sitting in the passenger seat, couldn’t help but laugh.

……

A few minutes later, the Ferrari tried to overtake again, but I just gave the steering wheel a gentle flick, fishtailed a bit, and scared the other driver into swerving. The front of his car scraped against the mountainside with a loud “bang,” and both the license plate and the emblem flew off!

“Screech…”

The TT stopped, and so did the Ferrari. That young man angrily flung open his car door and shouted, “Emily Lincoln, you’re ruthless! We’ll meet again next time, damn it!”

The Ferrari and Camaro sped off into the curtain of rain, fleeing in defeat.

I, on the other hand, calmly moved to the passenger seat, composed as ever. Outside the window, the rain was gradually stopping.

34D sat silently beside me and said, “Your driving skills are pretty good. How did you learn?”

I smiled. “I used to work in the traffic police squad. I was the number one car god…”

34D: “……”

Seeing her silent, I said, “Racing in this kind of environment is way too dangerous. Don’t you care about your own life at all?”

Her eyes were a little red as she looked out the window and said, “How could you possibly understand my sadness…”

I laughed. “Your sadness? Look at me—I don’t even have money for my next meal, my rent’s been overdue for two days and I still haven’t figured it out, and you’re driving an Audi TT and feeling sad? I’m the one who should be sad, damn it!”

34D looked at me aggrievedly, her beautiful eyes full of apology. She reached out and pushed open the passenger door: “Get out.”

I was stunned, but got out of the car.

“Vroom!”

The engine roared, and the Audi TT sped down the mountain.

Standing in the rain, I was dumbfounded. It took me a while to come to my senses: “Damn it, I’ve been left on the mountain. Damn, this really was revenge—a ruthless, inhumane revenge!”

……

Wiping the rain from my face, I broke into a bright smile. I patted my pockets—didn’t even have a dime. No way I could take the bus back. So, I smiled even brighter. Could something this small stop me?

I took off running. It was only 20 kilometers—hell, I’d run back to the company! So, a rare sight appeared on the highway: a guy in a security guard uniform overtaking buses and taxis, sprinting through the endless stream of traffic, his determined figure ignored by everyone.

Over an hour later, I stood panting at the foot of the company building…

So cool!

……

By the time I got back to the company, it was already 5 p.m. I started worrying again—still hadn’t figured out dinner, and it was already time to get off work, so I couldn’t sneak a meal in the company cafeteria.

I changed out of my uniform and left the company.

Night fell, and the city lights twinkled like stars, as if a graceful lady had put on her evening gown. Unfortunately, the alluring body beneath that gown was something only the rich could enjoy, while people like me… ahem, I belonged to the species known as city trash.

……

The road to making money began!

“Clang, clang, clang…”

A spatula skillfully tossed food in a wok. This was a night market stall that only opened after dark, selling fried rice, fried noodles, stir-fried dishes, and other snacks. There were lots of customers.

After frying 20 portions of fried rice, I was drenched in sweat. The boss patted me on the shoulder: “Little David, you really worked hard today. Here, your pay for today…”

I happily took the five yuan and set off for the next spot!

By the roadside, there was a brightly lit club called “Blue Sea, Blue Sky,” a place where the rich came to spend money. I strolled in, and a few of the doormen recognized me.

As I entered, the chubby doorman looked at me and laughed, “Hey, David Thompson, you finally showed up!”

I nodded. “How many songs do I have tonight?”

“Three pieces, ten yuan each!”

“Great, thanks, Bill!”

“Wait, put your jacket on first!”

A suit jacket was tossed over. I quickly put it on, then walked into the dance floor and stepped onto the stage. Sitting in front of a grand piano, I let my fingers fall, and melodious music filled the room. The first piece was “Castle in the Sky,” the second was “Puppy Waltz,” and the third was “Kiss the Rain.” When I finished, applause filled the dance floor.

I gracefully stepped down from the stage, gave everyone a polite smile, and walked out. Suddenly, a soft, delicate arm grabbed my hand. It was a beautiful foreign girl, who quickly slipped me a note with a phone number on it. With a charming smile, she said, “Hi, call me…”

I nodded and smiled, walked out the door, took off my jacket, and collected three ten-yuan bills from the chubby guy before heading off.

Watching my back, Bill let out a long sigh—

“Damn, what a talent!”
