Chapter 5

Everywhere, there were ragged, emaciated laborers, exhaustedly mining for diamonds under the supervision and beatings of a group of armed men.

One container after another was transported onto the island and opened in succession. A strong stench of excrement immediately spread out— for a full half month, all the laborers had been locked inside the containers. There was a hole the size of a bowl on each container, and all food and water were delivered through this hole.

“Damn it, quite a few still died.”

The foreman, holding a whip, inspected the laborers slowly crawling out of the containers, cursing loudly.

“Are we really going to get paid for working here?”

A frail man had just crawled out of a container, looking timidly at the foreman, who was a head taller than him.

The heavy whip lashed fiercely across his body. The foreman grinned viciously and said, “Paid? If you don’t want to die, you’d better work hard, you piglet!”

Several haggard-faced laborers cried out in panic, “Weren’t we promised wages? If not, we won’t work!”

“Won’t work?”

The foreman swung his whip menacingly. Several armed men immediately raised their guns, and with bursts of muzzle flashes, those laborers fell screaming into pools of blood.

“Now, does anyone else have anything to say?”

The foreman shouted harshly, “Give them tools immediately. Tonight, teach these piglets how to work!”

“Boss, there’s a half-dead one here.”

A burly man kicked Ethan Brooks, who had crawled out of the container. He was filthy all over, convulsing on the ground, the veins under his skin bulging in a shocking manner, his ears twitching slightly, as if undergoing some strange mutation.

With a “swish,” the whip lashed his back like a venomous snake. The foreman roared savagely, “Don’t you fucking play dead, get up!”

Ethan Brooks opened his eyes in confusion— blazing flames, flowing blood, and a snow-white fox flickering in and out of sight.

In the night sky, a golden full moon hung silently, eerily turning a ghastly white.

Suddenly, his entire skeleton emitted a violent cracking sound. Ethan Brooks threw his head back and howled madly, his tattered clothes bursting into fragments, scattering like butterflies.

His eyes actually began to shine like stars, vivid and otherworldly!

“Rumble, rumble, rumble…”

Suddenly, a roar echoed in the night sky. Dozens of dark green attack helicopters appeared without warning, circling above the island.

The armed men looked up in shock. A loud warning blared from the helicopters: “We are the United Nations Special Task Force. We are the United Nations Special Task Force. You are surrounded. Lay down your weapons within ten minutes. I repeat, lay down your weapons within ten minutes and surrender, or we will take forceful action.”

“Goddamn it, open fire!”

The foreman cursed and raised the machine gun on his chest, firing wildly into the sky.

Chaos erupted on the island. The armed men all raised their guns in resistance. The helicopters immediately returned fire. Amid the deafening sounds of gunfire and explosions, streams of tracer fire wove a dazzling web of light in the night.

The laborers began to flee in all directions.

One of the armed men suddenly stared at the surging waves and shouted in terror, “Oh no, it’s submarines!”

Three small submarines broke through the waves, appearing in front of the island. Fully armed UN special forces swarmed ashore, quickly climbing onto the island and launching a ruthless assault on the men who still resisted.

With the support of aerial firepower, the battle quickly became one-sided. The resisters were shot down one after another, while the rest clasped their heads in despair and squatted on the ground.

A Black Hawk helicopter slowly descended from the sky.

“That was a beautiful fight.”

Inside the cabin, the pilot respectfully turned to Major General James and said, “We’ve cleared out this illegal black-market mine. You can retire with honor.”

James looked down at the island ablaze with firelight and sighed deeply. He was already fifty-four years old, had served as the director of the UN Special Task Force for a full twenty years, and was now about to retire. Inevitably, he felt a bit sentimental.

“What is that?”

James stared intently at the island and shouted.

A white figure was sprinting rapidly across the island, moving with agility and grace, yet in a very strange manner. From a distance, it looked like a fox being chased by hounds.

“Alert all team members—intercept that thing! Capture it alive!”

James ordered decisively.

Dozens of special task force members immediately rushed forward, but the white figure was exceptionally nimble. Just as they were about to grab him, he would dodge left or right in a bizarre way, slipping through their grasp.

“They say it’s a person, seems to be a laborer!”

The pilot said to James in shock.

The helicopter landed on the island. James climbed out of the cabin, staring in disbelief at the white figure running in the distance, exclaiming, “My Jesus Christ, it really is a person!”

Hundreds of team members finally surrounded the white figure, slowly closing in, trapping him in the center.

“Don’t hurt him!”

James instructed as he ran over in astonishment.

It was a handsome Asian youth, about seventeen or eighteen years old. His clothes were almost completely torn to shreds, and his snow-white skin glowed with a strange, gentle luster, making him look exceptionally striking.
