Chapter 8

Brian Carter sighed, feeling sorry for his friend. He had truly mastered the old arts, but was forced to give them up, all because a glimpse of supernatural power at the edge of deep space had appeared, revealing a new path!

On Nova, they chose the extraordinary and officially abandoned the old arts!

Brian Carter and David Miller talked at length, discussing the friends from their class who had left early, and both felt a wave of melancholy.

David Miller was better off, staying on the Old Land, where he could still meet up with those friends.

Brian Carter asked him, “Aren’t you going to see your girlfriend? She’s about to return to Nova. If you don’t go now, you really won’t get another chance. It’ll probably be hard to see her again in the future.”

David Miller shook his head. “We’ve been apart for over a year. I won’t go see her off. If her family finds out, they’ll overthink it and cause her trouble. It’s better for us to go our separate ways.”

Brian Carter sighed. Having a girlfriend from Nova had always been a source of pressure for David Miller. That girl’s family was very domineering and had come to the Old Land several times to issue warnings.

“Do you think the reason you weren’t selected this time is because her family intervened, trying to hold you back and keep you from going to Nova?” Brian Carter suddenly thought of this possibility.

After all, David Miller’s ex-girlfriend’s family was quite unusual.

Even though the old arts had now been abandoned.

Looking back, it was clear that some people had sent their children from Nova to learn the old arts in preparation for contact with supernatural powers—they definitely had some background.

“No way!” Although he hadn’t interacted with them much, David Miller understood her family’s character. They wouldn’t go that far, and besides, they’d been separated for over a year and had no more contact.

Moreover, the old arts research project was backed by some conglomerates; no one would dare meddle with it lightly.

Night fell, stars twinkled, and the two talked about everything.

“In a few days, I’ll be heading to New Moon. David Miller, I feel conflicted. I really hope you get a chance to go to Nova, to experience the supernatural and set foot on that new path. But at the same time, I feel it’s so wrong for them to just toss aside the old arts like garbage. We’ve all been abandoned!”

At this point, Brian Carter calmed himself and spoke again: “So, I also hope you can achieve great things on the path of the old arts. If those myths and legends are real, wouldn’t that be amazing? One day, you could use the old arts to fight against supernatural powers, suppress the extraordinary beings from Nova, and make them realize how wrong they were to abandon the old arts!”

He had always been skeptical of the old arts, but now he hoped that the myths of past generations could be traced and revived.

But after calming down a bit, he let out a heavy sigh. None of that was realistic; those so-called legends had no basis.

David Miller gazed up at the starry sky. Had immortals and myths really appeared in ancient times?

He shook his head. Even if there was solid evidence that immortals once existed, it would only serve to give future generations confidence, but it meant nothing to him.

Because he didn’t believe in immortals or Buddhas. His study of the old arts was never about those myths; he simply enjoyed exploring and wanted to see how far the path of the old arts could go.

Whether immortals had ever existed didn’t matter to him. His faith was firm—he was verifying this path for himself.

Chapter 006: The Goddess

Under the night sky, a streak of silver light flashed by, gradually approaching and descending deep within the campus.

“A Nova flying saucer—the goddess is back?” Brian Carter looked up, pulling David Miller along to go take a look.

There was a helipad on campus, with fairly complete facilities.

David Miller said, “She’s your goddess, don’t drag me along.”

He felt that Brian Carter could be sentimental when quiet, but got a bit rash when excited—like now, he was being quite unreliable.

“It’s the same for everyone. You have to know, almost everyone admits she’s a goddess.” Brian Carter insisted on dragging him along.

In his words, “Every time you see her is one less time you’ll get to see her. In a few days, we might never see her again in this life.”

David Miller was speechless. What kind of talk is that? Is this really your goddess? It almost felt like going to view a body.

“Don’t worry, I’m just admiring from afar. I have a girlfriend and principles!” Brian Carter emphasized.

David Miller thought about it. That area was close to Professor Sullivan’s residence, and he did need to go see him—after all, the old professor would be leaving the Old Land in a few days.

In fact, a few days ago, Professor Sullivan had called him, asking him to come by when he had time.

He understood the old man’s intentions—he probably wanted to discuss how to help him get a spot to go to Nova.

David Miller had always been reluctant to trouble others, especially since he knew the style of the investors behind the old arts research project—outsiders could hardly intervene.

He respected the old professor and knew he meant well, which made him even more unwilling to see the old man get rejected by the investors on his behalf.

The campus was large and the distance was considerable. By the time David Miller and Brian Carter approached, the helipad was already quiet—everyone had probably left.

David Miller glanced at the silvery-gray flying saucer and said to Brian Carter, “Go see your goddess by yourself. I’ll go visit Professor Sullivan for a while.”

“Forget it, it’s pitch dark. If I follow along and get misunderstood by Olivia Scott, and if there are bodyguards around, I might get beaten up with nowhere to complain. I’ll go with you to visit Professor Sullivan.”

In the end, Brian Carter chickened out and decided to be a principled, faithful boyfriend.
