Chapter 16

Brian Carter knew that his hope had fallen through.

If, in her eyes, he was just normal, how could she be so wary?

He didn’t like being looked at with such a guarded gaze.

So he just considered for a moment, then slowly replied, “Actually, you don’t need to worry. My family members are all very good people.”

“My little sister is a lovely child, she likes toys, likes to run around and play;”

“My father likes to cook, he’s very honest, always staying in the kitchen;”

“My mother is very gentle, she never argues with anyone, she just likes to reason with people…”

“……”

Grace Brooks looked at him answering so seriously, and felt an extremely complicated emotion inside.

This person was just too normal…

He was actually describing, in a very earnest and normal way, several people who didn’t exist at all…

The clearer his descriptions, the more tense Grace Brooks felt inside.

She lit a cigarette to cover her feelings, while her earpiece was still urging her on.

There were many choices in front of her: she could immediately withdraw the recruitment decision, she could raise the level of monitoring on this person, or even directly use her ability to kill him as a potential threat in this quiet little bar.

But thinking of his usual behavior, and the current situation in High Wall City, she hesitated for a moment.

In the end, she made up her mind, took out an envelope from beside her, pushed it in front of Brian Carter, and looked into his eyes as she said, “The test on you was arranged by me. Because only when the subject is unaware can the results be truly objective, so before the test, we kept it from you. But you passed the test, and you also helped us deal with that level-one psychic monster.”

“So, you’ve completed a commission. This is your reward!”

Brian Carter was stunned for a moment, picked up the envelope, opened it, and saw rolls of banknotes inside.

Each bill was fifty yuan.

The disappointment that had just appeared on Brian Carter’s face suddenly brightened a little.

“This is ten thousand yuan!”

Grace Brooks saved him the trouble of counting the money and said it directly.

“Ten thousand?”

Brian Carter’s expression clearly changed a bit.

After the Red Moon incident, the currency system had been reshuffled. Now, at his company, his monthly salary was one thousand.

And he was even a model employee!

“It’s what you deserve.”

Grace Brooks looked at Brian Carter’s slightly surprised face and smiled, “And now that you have these abilities, making money shouldn’t be hard for you!”

“It’s still pretty hard…”

Brian Carter thought silently, took the envelope, gripped it in his hand, and said, “I just happen to need money.”

Grace Brooks mused to herself, thinking, “Likes money, danger index can be lowered a bit more…”

Brian Carter was obviously a bit nervous. After hesitating, he asked in a low voice, “Do you always give this much?”

“It’ll be even more in the future!”

Grace Brooks said, “This time, the psychic monster had already been thoroughly investigated, and we had the area sealed and under control. Even if you hadn’t acted, we could have easily eliminated it, so the reward was only ten thousand yuan. But under normal circumstances, when an action team member completes both the investigation and elimination tasks, the usual reward we approve is around thirty thousand yuan…”

“Thirty thousand…”

Brian Carter didn’t notice anything else.

He was clearly shocked, his expression a little excited.

“That’s right!”

Seeing his reaction, Grace Brooks felt even more at ease and smiled, “You’ll never be short of money again!”

Brian Carter really loved that sentence!

……

……

When he left the bar, it was still not dark yet. The red sunset spread over this rundown city.

In the southern sky, a faintly reddish moon was already hanging on the horizon.

“Ten thousand yuan, just like that?”

Brian Carter still felt it was a bit unbelievable.

Before this, he hadn’t known he already had the ability to earn so much money at once.

But he really liked this money, and he really needed it.

Letting out a light breath, Brian Carter perked up, went to the bus stop, waited for the No. 2 bus, then swayed along for an hour, arriving at the east side of the satellite city, in front of a cluster of low, dilapidated buildings. He walked through a few alleys, past listless street vendors and drunks clutching bottles leaning against the walls, and came to a house.

Compared to the surrounding decay and ruin, this house looked very bright.

Perhaps it was because the walls were spray-painted with many cartoon figures in blue and yellow.

This was a small orphanage.

On the iron gate was a rusty iron plaque, with “Red Moon Primary School” written on it!

Brian Carter untwisted the barbed wire, entered the school, and the old man in the security booth, who was reading a newspaper, heard the noise. Seeing it was Brian Carter, he didn’t stop him, just nodded, and went back to reading his paper.

This primary school had only one classroom; the other buildings were all dilapidated, piled with sundry items.
