Chapter 9

But just as her body was less than three meters from the ground, a cluster of sand grains had already formed a palm-sized platform right where she was about to land.

Olivia Brooks tapped her toes on it and took another step. With each step downward, a cluster of sand grains would gather, forming a foothold in midair wherever she landed.

“Cool, beautiful, Sister Olivia, how about…” At this moment, Little Monk below was truly starry-eyed.

Olivia Brooks had already landed by now. She pointed at William Brooks, the Little Monk, and instantly a cluster of sand grains flew to William Brooks's mouth. Clearly having learned his lesson, William Brooks immediately covered his mouth with his hand.

Only then did Olivia Brooks smile and take the late-night snack: “Little Rascal, you’re only sixteen and already want to act like a playboy monk? The minister told me to keep an eye on you, so don’t get any funny ideas.”

William Brooks pouted, “The minister’s life or death is unknown, and he’s still watching me? Besides, my dharma name is ‘One戒不戒’, sixteen isn’t that young, you know.”

Olivia Brooks ignored him, found a place to sit, and as she sat down, some black sand grains instantly spread out beneath her, moving as if they were her own limbs, responding to her will.

“Sister Olivia, spread some here for me too…”

Wanting to sit down and eat as well, William Brooks spoke up, but seeing that Olivia Brooks was completely ignoring him, he could only pat his kasaya, which grew larger, and he sat directly on it, then picked up a big chicken drumstick and started eating.

Among the pile of takeout, only a few lighter dishes belonged to Olivia Brooks; most were William Brooks's.

After eating for a while, William Brooks looked at the city around them, dazzlingly decorated with lights: “Sister Olivia, we’ve been guarding here for three or four days now. They said there was a huge surge of spiritual energy here, but after all these days, we haven’t found anything.”

As he spoke, William Brooks wiped his mouth and picked up a box of ice cream, eating as he asked, “Sister Olivia, there’s really nothing going on here. We’re supposed to be doing big things—we can’t just waste time here.”

Olivia Brooks: “All you do is eat. How do you know there’s nothing big going on? Plenty of people have come to investigate, but we still don’t know exactly who they are. The higher-ups haven’t figured out the cause of that huge spiritual energy surge either. Just follow orders and stop being so impatient.”

Being called impatient by Olivia Brooks, William Brooks was quite indignant. Sister Olivia was only nineteen herself—“three years older, a golden brick in your arms,” as the saying goes.

Fine, he only dared to think that, not say it out loud, or he’d definitely get beaten up.

Who would have thought that two such extraordinary people would be monitoring this area from the top of an unfinished building?

David Thompson's Jianghai University was within their surveillance zone, but clearly, what they were monitoring wasn’t ordinary. David Thompson didn’t know this, but ever since he discovered his own abnormality, he’d been very cautious, always careful in his words and actions.

He hadn’t tested himself at home—first, such tests wouldn’t be accurate, and second, it would be easy to attract attention.

The old campus had an open-air stadium. Now that Jianghai University had two large gymnasiums, events were no longer held here. Mainly, there were lots of trees, and faculty would often take walks here. David Thompson, as if he couldn’t sleep and was out for a night run, jogged over casually.

After reaching a tree-lined avenue, David Thompson circled around—there was no one in sight.

He set his sports watch, and as the crisp sound like a starting pistol rang out, David Thompson sprinted at full speed.

A hundred meters—he reached the end quickly. After stopping, David Thompson wasn’t even that tired. He immediately checked his watch: 11.52 seconds.

Even though he was mentally prepared, David Thompson was still a bit surprised at the number. The standard for a first-class athlete is 10.93 seconds; for second-class, it’s 11.74 seconds.

Although David Thompson used to play basketball, loved outdoor adventures and travel, and was considered top-tier in physical fitness at the Inspection University, he’d never reached this level. Not to mention, in the year since graduation, he’d focused on his company and barely exercised.

Taking a deep breath, David Thompson took out a small box and ate a black berry.

This time, he closed his eyes and felt it slowly. The black berry melted instantly in his mouth. Unlike last time, this time David Thompson could feel a faint warmth instantly flowing through his limbs and bones.

Even his internal organs felt the rush of warmth—he could feel his body brimming with power.

The process didn’t last long, even shorter than last time. David Thompson knew this was related to having taken it before, and also to his current physical state being different from before.

Sensing the change was over, David Thompson began testing his hundred-meter speed again. The conditions weren’t ideal, but this was the simplest and most convenient test—he didn’t dare do a full physical exam right now.

After sprinting another hundred meters at full speed, David Thompson himself felt like he was flying.

“9.58 seconds.”

“Did I just break the record?”

Even David Thompson could hardly believe it. Although his testing method might have some margin of error, it couldn’t be that far off.

You know, the world record for the hundred meters was still 9.72 seconds from 2008, and it hadn’t been broken since.

He’d just felt the change wasn’t as great as last time, yet he’d reached this level.
