Chapter 16

Charles Bennett seemed to hesitate for a moment, then said, "Alright, you lead the way, I'll give directions... everyone together now."

They went down a slope, with stone walls on both sides. It was obvious at a glance that this had been artificially constructed, though many spots were overgrown with weeds and moss. A stream flowed along one side of the stone wall, with a small path beside it, also thick with wild grass and shrubs.

There was a faint rustling sound from the grass. Charles Bennett said, "Watch your step, there seems to be something..."

One of the cultivators said, "Probably snakes or bugs or something like that. It's fine, we've applied secret medicine, they shouldn't bite us."

They weren't afraid of ordinary snakes or bugs, but Charles Bennett knew that such creatures could be cultivated, and some mutated ones could be extremely dangerous.

His cultivation was extremely high and his knowledge vast, far surpassing these three cultivators. In the cultivation world, nothing could be viewed with a mortal's eyes—strange things were as common as cattle, and a moment's carelessness could spell disaster. Still, he didn't warn them further.

Gradually, the stone walls receded, the space opened up, and then Charles Bennett saw a circle of houses. Instantly, his spirits lifted and he said, "I wonder what this place is..."

As soon as he finished speaking, there was a cracking sound beneath his feet. Looking down, he had just stepped on a skull, half of its eye socket staring at him like a dark hole.

The three cultivators cried out in alarm.

Although this was flat ground, it was overgrown with weeds and shrubs, all tangled together, just without any large trees.

Upon discovering the bones and checking a bit, they realized the ground was littered with skeletons. The grass was truly filled with white bones, and then Charles Bennett saw the stone wall, riddled with honeycomb-like holes, so densely packed it made one's skin crawl.

Charles Bennett felt a sense of foreboding. He slowly began to back away, while the other three were still rummaging on the ground, trying to find some leftover treasures.

These three cultivators were quite distinctive: one was fat, one was tall, and one had a face full of red spots with a single braid sticking straight up from his head. Of the three, the one with the braid was the most alert. He noticed Charles Bennett slowly backing away and asked in surprise, "Big Brother... what's wrong?" He spoke very loudly.

Charles Bennett raised a finger, signaling him not to speak, then continued to back away while listening intently.

At this, the three also grew tense.

  "Ying!"

Suddenly, a silver thread shot out from the honeycomb-like stone wall, aiming straight at Charles Bennett.

In an instant, a sword appeared in Charles Bennett's hand, and he struck out sharply.

  Ding!

The silver thread was struck by the sword tip, making a crisp sound. Charles Bennett said nothing, and the sword in his hand vanished. He grabbed the fat one and the one with the braid, spun around, and dashed out at a speed faster than lightning!

The tall one froze for a moment, then hurriedly followed to escape.

Even though the tall one wasn't slow, he was still far behind Charles Bennett. Watching him drag the other two farther and farther away, the tall one couldn't help but shout, "Wait for me..."

  "Ying! Ying! Ying! Ying..."

In an instant, silver threads shot out from the stone wall, scaring the tall one into pulling out a giant hammer to desperately fend them off. Over a dozen silver threads came at him—how many could he block?

In a flash, there was a series of clanging sounds. The tall one barely blocked three or five threads; the rest all struck his large body.

Immediately, he let out a blood-curdling scream. Those things were alive, burrowing straight into his body and gnawing their way through him.

Charles Bennett was already out of sight, having long since escaped with the other two.

The tall one crashed to the ground, howling, "Big Brother, save me, save me... ah..."

Throwing away his giant hammer, he pulled out a sharp dagger and slashed at his thigh, instantly digging out a silver bug the size of a fingernail. He had no idea what it was, but there were still many inside him, one of which had already burrowed into his abdomen.

The tall one couldn't understand how a bug could be so deadly. At his level of cultivation, not to mention bug bites, even ordinary blades couldn't cut his skin.

Just then, several more silver threads shot out, striking his head in an instant. One even went straight into his eye, the pain making him collapse. A thought flashed through his mind: "I've been set up... what on earth are these things?"

At the moment of death, he finally realized that he had been set up by Charles Bennett.

That final moment of clarity filled him with deep regret, and he muttered, "Someone clearly warned me... why was I still so stupid..."

Charles Bennett fled madly with the other two, quickly escaping to a distance. He set them down, putting on a look of deep sorrow. "Alas, I only have two hands!"

In truth, even if he had a third hand, he absolutely wouldn't have taken the tall one—because that was the only way to escape danger, letting the tall one attract the bugs.

The reason he saved the other two was that Charles Bennett still needed cannon fodder. If both of them died in there, he'd have to face the danger alone.

The fat one's face was deathly pale, and he thanked him repeatedly, "Thank you, Big Brother, for saving my life!"

The guy with the braid, still shaken, said, "Big Brother, what were those things... how could they be so terrifying?"

  Silver Immortal Gu!
