Chapter 8

This is what it means to have true mastery... Forget about the second, fourth, and fifth brothers—even William Carter, who’s supposed to be his nemesis and claims to suppress him in every way, has to admit defeat in this regard.

Of course, in the eyes of the guys, the “flower” in Grace Bennett’s name can only mean “infatuated.”

When William Carter arrived at the “usual place” hotel, he immediately started scanning the lobby. Knowing the fat guy’s habits, even if the private rooms didn’t require a minimum spend, he still wouldn’t go. “There’s always fresh grass within ten steps”—with over a hundred people in the lobby, how could there not be a few beauties? Grace Bennett always believed that good food is a feast, and beautiful women are an even greater feast, so he was definitely in the lobby.

Sure enough, William Carter immediately spotted Grace Bennett sitting in the corner by the wall. The guy was squinting, half-lying on the table pretending to nap, his eyes—sharp as those of an underground agent in a movie—darting around, locking onto several women in the hotel who were either seven or eight out of ten, or six or seven out of ten in looks, with a lecherous expression on his face.

He didn’t even notice when William Carter walked up beside him. It wasn’t until William Carter slapped him on the shoulder that he suddenly jolted in surprise and delight, his whole body of fat quivering as he said, “What took you so long? You’re treating today, right?”

“Me again? Boss, you’re the eldest of our five brothers, a deputy section chief at the Personnel Bureau. With all the perks you rake in, your pillow at home must be gone by now, right? I don’t even have a job yet…”

William Carter sat down across from the fat guy, shaking his head in exasperation. This guy was great in every way except that he valued women over friends—generous to women, stingy with his brothers, and he never got tired of it. Sometimes it really made you want to beat him up.

“Nonsense, this is for your sake—if you’re not treating, who is? I’m just a poor public servant, but you have overseas connections and could jump into the arms of capitalism at any time, yet you’re still thinking of shortchanging us proletarians?”

Grace Bennett snorted, waved over a waiter, and ordered a full six dishes and a soup, plus a case of cold beer, before finally saying with satisfaction, “Let’s start with these. If it’s not enough, we’ll order more…”

“That much still not enough? Can you even finish it all?”

“If I can’t, I’ll pack it up and take it home for a late-night snack with your sister-in-law. Thanks in advance, brother…”

Grace Bennett grinned shamelessly.

The food arrived quickly. Grace Bennett, as if he’d been starving for days, downed two bottles of beer and demolished an entire pig’s trotter before finally opening up: “Third bro, what’s up with you these days? You seem even lazier than me! Tell me, how many jobs have I introduced you to? This time it’s a lecturer position at Chudu Medical University… You said you wouldn’t teach specialized courses, said teaching philosophy was more relaxed. I had to beg and plead with the principal, and he only agreed because of my father-in-law’s connections. But what did you do? You went to class and started spouting your own stuff, saying life is like a sandpit—how could the principal not blow up?”

His mouth dry, Grace Bennett picked up another glass of beer and downed it: “Third bro, just tell me—what kind of job do you actually want? I can’t exactly arrange for you to be a mayor or governor, can I?”

Although Comrade Xiaohua got a kind of “self-satisfaction” from helping William Carter look for work, even that has its limits, right? Besides, Zhou’s dad is a hot-tempered guy who’s been making international calls to urge him lately. There were even a few times when Comrade Xiaohua was just about to get intimate with his “flower” and got interrupted by a call, nearly ruining the mood.

So now, Comrade Xiaohua would rather give up that kind of pleasure and just find a way to get William Carter settled as soon as possible. William Carter’s job search was starting to affect his own happiness.

“Mayor or governor? I’m not interested…”

William Carter smiled. He knew he really should find a job, otherwise he’d never get past his dad. Fine, this time he’d take it seriously and cooperate with the fat guy: “Whether it’s a civil servant or a public institution, I don’t care. As for salary… as long as it’s enough to feed me, that’s fine. My only requirement is no fixed working hours—best if I can come and go as I please. Also, the work environment should be nice. If I could work somewhere with beautiful mountains and clear water, that’d be perfect… Hmm… Oh, and the workload shouldn’t be too heavy. I need time to read books and newspapers, to study the Four Modernizations, you know? And… if there are some attractive women in the office, that’d be great—men and women working together makes the job less tiring… Of course, that last one isn’t a must.”

A laid-back attitude to life naturally included the normal, healthy enjoyment of beautiful women, so William Carter thought for a moment and added that condition.

“…Damn!”

Grace Bennett stared at William Carter, forgetting to eat or drink, panting heavily, and after a long moment rolled his eyes and cursed, “Maybe I should call you boss! Boss, if there’s such a good job, could you please introduce one to me? I’d definitely switch jobs!”

“Now you’re stumped? No way! You’re the deputy section chief of the Chudu City Personnel Bureau, in charge of personnel transfers, aren’t you?”

William Carter spread his hands, looking innocently at Grace Bennett: “I’m being serious—this is already my final bottom line.”

“Final bottom line? Are you negotiating or something?”

Grace Bennett was thoroughly exasperated. If he didn’t know that the shameless guy in front of him was physically superior in every way, he’d really want to jump up and strangle William Carter.
