Chapter 16

Seeing Grace Bennett get out of the police car, the round-faced girl immediately rushed forward and hugged her, tears streaming down uncontrollably. Grace Bennett also started crying.

Girls are just so sentimental.

Edward York didn’t rush them; instead, he simply stood to the side, lit a cigarette, and smoked slowly.

Grace Bennett had been through so much in these past twenty days and needed to vent a little, or else she wouldn’t be able to handle it.

After the two girls hugged, whispered to each other for a while, and shed some tears, they finally remembered there was still a police officer standing nearby.

“Sorry, Officer York, I… here, these are the documents…”

It took a lot for Grace Bennett to stop crying. She took the file from the round-faced girl without even opening it and handed it straight to Edward York.

Edward York took it, opened it on the spot, and examined it carefully under the light above the minivan’s driver’s seat.

He needed to confirm the authenticity of these documents.

They looked real.

It’s not that these things can’t be faked, but the key is that Grace Bennett isn’t the type to forge things. If you want fake documents, you need a “professional.”

“Grace Bennett, get in the car.”

Edward York only looked for a few minutes before putting the documents back in the file bag and speaking to Grace Bennett.

“Oh…”

The round-faced girl grabbed Grace Bennett, leaned in close to her ear, and whispered, “Xiaoyan, go with him. I think this guy is trustworthy…”

Our Edward York is a man of integrity.

Grace Bennett reluctantly said goodbye to the round-faced girl and got into the police minivan.

Edward York started the car and drove off into the night.

At first, Grace Bennett didn’t realize anything was off, but after a few minutes, she started to feel something was wrong and couldn’t help but ask, “Officer York, this isn’t the way back to the police station, is it? Where are you going?”

Her heart suddenly tightened.

Could it be that this Officer York is also a hypocrite?

Is he actually full of bad intentions?

Grace Bennett didn’t think of herself as a great beauty, but at least she wasn’t unattractive. She had a nice figure, was young and fresh, and would still attract the attention of many men.

“To Dahua Machinery Factory.”

Edward York answered simply.

“Huh? Why are we going to Dahua Machinery Factory?”

Grace Bennett was a bit confused.

“My hometown is at Dahua Machinery Factory. My parents both live there. For now, don’t go home or back to school. Just stay at my place for a while.”

“Don’t worry, it’s just my dad and mom at home, no one else. They’re both very nice.”

Edward York said casually as he drove.

“No, Officer York, that’s not what I meant. I wanted to ask, why do I have to stay at your place…”

Grace Bennett felt her mind was in a mess and stammered out her question.

Edward York glanced at her and said calmly, “You’re not safe, you know?”

“Until this case is completely solved, you’re still their target, because you’re a very important witness. So you need to hide, don’t let anyone find you, understand?”

Grace Bennett nodded in a daze, then said, “But, but if I hide at Dahua Machinery Factory, won’t that put your parents in danger?”

“Those people are ruthless…”

“It won’t.”

Edward York replied with certainty.

“They’d never guess I’d take you to my own home. Besides, you don’t know the kind of respect my old man commands at Dahua Factory. If he so much as grunts, everyone at the factory will come running.”

At this, a hint of a smile appeared at the corner of Edward York’s mouth, a bit of pride showing.

Actually, there was an even more important reason Edward York didn’t mention—he was afraid of scaring Grace Bennett.

In their family, Edward York, the first-place winner in the special forces competition, wasn’t even the toughest one!

Anyone who dared to cause trouble at his house must have a death wish.

Someone would beat those bastards until they soiled themselves!

Chapter 12: Dahua Machinery Factory

It was obvious that Grace Bennett was very nervous.

All the way, she kept her lips tightly pressed together, staring straight ahead, not saying a word. From her expression, it was clear she wanted to say something, but she forced herself to hold it in.

Grace Bennett knew that Edward York made sense, and she knew he meant well and was thinking of her safety.

But the thought of having to live in a completely unfamiliar household for a while made her nervous.

That’s only natural.

After all, moving into Officer York’s home so suddenly, she didn’t even have a proper reason.

If neighbors or friends asked, what would she say her relationship to the Ye family was?

Especially since she didn’t know if Officer York was married. If he was, and suddenly a young woman appeared at home, what would his wife think?

All these worries weighed on Grace Bennett’s chest like a huge stone, making it hard for her to breathe.

Edward York, on the other hand, didn’t have so many concerns.

After all, he was a grown man. When working a case, he was meticulous and logical, but when it came to understanding a girl’s feelings, he wasn’t so perceptive.

Most of the time, he considered things from the perspective of solving the case.

Since Grace Bennett didn’t say anything, he just assumed she agreed.
