Chapter 18

Edward York slowly drove the car into the yard of Courtyard No. 1 and parked it by the side.

As soon as he opened the car door and jumped out, he heard a creak—the door of the bungalow had already swung open, and under the light, a slender and upright figure appeared.

“Mom!”

Edward York grinned and greeted the woman who appeared at the door.

Just getting out from the front passenger seat, Grace Bennett was so nervous that she shivered, not even daring to look in that direction...

Chapter 13: An Old Husband and a Young Wife

“Wusi, you’re back.”

Mrs. York’s voice sounded very gentle.

“Yeah, Mom, I’m back...”

“Come on, Grace Bennett, let’s go inside and talk.”

At this point, Grace Bennett could only steel herself, lower her head, and follow behind Edward York into the house.

“Girl, don’t be nervous, we don’t eat people from Jiuliu.”

Right after, a light laugh sounded in Grace Bennett’s ear, with a teasing tone, completely different from the dignified and imposing “high-ranking cadre’s wife” she had imagined.

Grace Bennett couldn’t help but sneak a glance up.

Mrs. York was smiling gently and looked quite young, with delicate features. If you saw her and Edward York walking together on the street, most people would probably mistake them for siblings.

Comrade Edward York works as a grassroots police officer, exposed to the sun and rain every day, so he looks a bit weathered.

Seeing Grace Bennett look up, Mrs. York reached out and patted her head, smiled gently, and nodded lightly.

“Hello, Auntie...”

Unconsciously, much of the tension in Grace Bennett’s heart faded away. She gave an embarrassed grin and greeted Mrs. York.

“Mm, let’s go inside.”

The three of them entered the bungalow.

From the outside, the bungalow was already quite old—after all, it was built forty years ago. The furnishings inside were also old, mostly wooden furniture: wooden chairs, wooden sofas, all carrying the atmosphere of the 1960s and 70s, completely out of step with the ever-changing trends outside.

But it gave Grace Bennett a sense of warmth.

Her family was from the countryside. Even though she had studied in the provincial capital for several years, at heart, she was still a country girl. The furnishings at her home were even more “ancient” and simple than Edward York’s.

If Edward York had really brought her into a luxurious villa, all grand and magnificent, Grace Bennett would probably be so nervous by now that she wouldn’t even know which foot to step forward with first.

But Grace Bennett’s nervousness only eased a little before her heart suddenly leapt into her throat again.

She saw Matthew York!

The old man was sitting on the wooden sofa in the living room, sitting upright and imposing, his back straight, clothes neat and tidy, his head full of white hair under the bright lights looking like a blazing flame, as if it were burning fiercely.

No matter when, Factory Director York always paid attention to his appearance.

Even in old age, he maintained the clean and crisp style of the military.

For example, this time, the old man had already gone to bed, but after receiving a call from his son saying he was bringing over a case-related person to stay at home for a few days, the old man immediately got up, tidied himself up, and sat here in full authority as the head of the household.

Usually, Edward York was full of spirit, acting as if nothing could faze him, but the moment he saw the old man, he immediately put away his smile, walked up properly, greeted him with a respectful “Dad,” and then stood there with his hands at his sides, waiting for instructions.

The old man was the only person who could make Edward York behave so properly.

Even in the army, facing his superior officers, Edward York had never been this cautious and respectful.

Deep down, Edward York’s personality actually took after his mother a bit—lively, unrestrained, unconventional.

“Mm, what’s the situation? Explain.”

Matthew York looked at his son, his face stern, speaking calmly without a hint of a smile.

On the phone, Edward York hadn’t gone into detail, just gave a brief summary.

Edward York nodded and said, “Here’s the situation: this is Grace Bennett, her family is from Gantang Town. According to her, there was a recent underground accident at Sanping Coal Mine, and several people may not have made it out. One of them is her brother, but no one reported it. She reported it, and as a result, people tried to kill her. Tonight, I happened to run into her—four men, all armed with knives. I identified myself, but they still charged at me, so I took them all down...”

The old man listened with a stern face, extremely serious. Only at this point did his expression soften a little, and he gave a barely noticeable nod, clearly very satisfied with his son’s last sentence.

Dare to challenge the police? Then you must be taken down!

In the Ye family, none of the men have ever been cowards!

“From the looks of it, this case is very complicated. It might involve the boss behind Sanping Coal Mine, Deng Zihao. I’m worried that during this period, Grace Bennett’s safety can’t be guaranteed, so I’d like her to stay at our place for a while, until there’s a result in the case.”

As soon as Edward York finished speaking, Mrs. York laughed and said with a chuckle, “Wusi, you really have confidence...”

“Mom, what do you mean by that?”

Edward York asked in surprise.
