Chapter 17

Along the way, aside from inquiring about the whereabouts of Lady Collins, they were constantly clashing with Cao’s soldiers who were searching everywhere for James Carter. By now, they had already fought through no less than four waves. David Clark, being highly skilled in martial arts and a veteran of many battles, did not feel much strain. Ethan Brooks, however, was starting to feel exhausted, thinking to himself, “If we still can’t find Lady Collins, I’m going to die of exhaustion!” Looking at David Clark ahead, still full of energy and asking everywhere about Lady Collins, Ethan Brooks smiled bitterly and thought, “He can rescue his lord alone because he has the ability to do so. Why am I pretending to be a hero for no reason? If things go wrong this time, I might just lose my life! In the end, it’ll still be William Clark single-handedly saving his lord, only with the added tale of Andrew Brooks dying at Changban.” As he was pondering this, he suddenly saw David Clark up ahead, speaking excitedly with a villager. Seeing this, Ethan Brooks wondered, “Could it be that there’s news of Lady Collins?” With that thought, he immediately spurred his horse and rushed to David Clark’s side.

When David Clark saw Ethan Brooks catch up, he turned and said, “I’ve found out where Lady Collins is!” With that, he mounted his horse, pointed ahead, and said, “Madam’s leg is injured and she cannot walk. Right now, she’s hiding with the young master inside a broken wall up ahead! Andrew, quickly come with me to rescue her!” Without another word to Ethan Brooks, he spurred his horse and galloped off.

Ethan Brooks hurried after him. “We finally found her! So this is where she was! When I read the book, I knew Lady Collins was hiding behind a broken wall, but who knew where that wall actually was? I thought that having read the Three Kingdoms, I could easily rescue her, but now that I’m experiencing it myself, I realize how hard it is to find someone on a battlefield!” Thinking this, he sighed softly. “I really was too naive!”

The two of them raced ahead, and before long, they saw a dilapidated, damaged house up ahead, with flames still burning on the beams and thick smoke all around. David Clark quickly dismounted and rushed into the courtyard, and Ethan Brooks also jumped off his horse and followed David Clark inside.

This was an ordinary farmhouse, the yard not large, with a well in one corner. Most of the surrounding walls had collapsed, with only the section by the well still relatively intact. As soon as David Clark and Ethan Brooks burst in, they saw Lady Collins hiding in the corner by the wall. At this moment, Lady Collins was leaning against the well, holding Brian Carter, who was crying. She didn’t even notice David Clark and Ethan Brooks rushing in until they knelt before her. Only then did she realize who had come, and when she saw it was David Clark, she finally relaxed.

Lady Collins let out a long sigh and said to David Clark and Ethan Brooks, “To see the two generals, Brian Carter is saved! I beg you both to have pity on his father, who has wandered half his life and has only this child. Please escort him and let him return to his father’s side. If you do this, I will die without regret!”

David Clark said anxiously, “Madam’s suffering is my fault. Say no more, please mount the horse. I will fight on foot to the death to protect you and break through the encirclement!” David Clark had always believed that the two mistresses and the young master had fallen into such danger because he had failed to protect them, which is why he spoke this way.

When Lady Collins heard David Clark say this, she quickly replied, “No! General, can you be without a horse? This child relies entirely on your protection. I am already injured; my death is of no consequence. Please take the child and leave, do not let me be a burden!” Hearing these words, Ethan Brooks felt his blood surge, thinking, “Even a woman can be so brave, what am I afraid of?” So he said to Lady Collins, “Let General Clark escort the young master, madam please mount the horse, I will ensure your safety!”

Lady Collins shook her head and said to Ethan Brooks, “General, you are so talented, should you risk your life for me? His father’s great cause is not yet accomplished and still needs your help. Please go, do not lose your life for me!” Ethan Brooks said nothing, knowing that Lady Collins was determined to die. Meanwhile, David Clark was intent on saving his lord, urging Lady Collins again and again to mount the horse, but she refused. As they were at an impasse, the sounds of battle and shouting rose again all around—they must have been the main forces of Cao Cao’s army arriving. David Clark quickly got up to check the situation, and Ethan Brooks seemed to look outside as well, but in fact was secretly watching Lady Collins. He saw her quietly set Brian Carter on the ground and start crawling toward the dry well, realizing she intended to throw herself in and end her life, so as to stop them from trying to save her. How could Ethan Brooks just stand by and watch her die? Moreover, the spirit Lady Collins displayed truly filled Ethan Brooks with admiration. Seeing her reach the well, he rushed over and struck the back of her neck with a knife-hand. Then he quickly caught the now limp Lady Collins, preventing her from falling into the well.

The commotion had already alerted David Clark. He turned around and saw Ethan Brooks chop down Lady Collins with his hand, and shouted angrily, “Ethan Brooks! What are you doing?” His tiger eyes glared at Ethan Brooks, as if he wanted to tear him apart.

Ethan Brooks knew that David Clark was fiercely protective of his lord, and in this era, who would dare show such disrespect to their master? So he did not blame David Clark, but simply explained, “Madam was about to throw herself into the well. I had no choice!”

David Clark was stunned for a moment, and when he saw Brian Carter wrapped in a cloak and placed on the ground, he knew Ethan Brooks was telling the truth. Still, he could not accept Ethan Brooks’s actions and reproached him, “Even so, how could you use such force?”
