“Human sacrifice? Hiss~~ Such an evil spell, that is indeed Fiona Carter’s style. Anything else?” Kenneth Carter’s face turned a bit pale. Clearly, human sacrifice was not as easy for him to accept as he tried to appear.
“Second, Fiona Carter has a huge appetite and is very fond of meat. Once, I saw him eat an entire young antelope, which must have weighed at least 40 jin! He basically finished it all, and he eats three meals a day. But he doesn’t look strong at all—I really don’t know where all that food goes.”
Kenneth Carter frowned slightly. “That’s very strange. Fiona Carter is a spellcaster, and spellcasters usually have small appetites, but Fiona Carter’s appetite… even I, as a warrior, find it unbelievable. It’s just not normal. If we get out of here, we might have to visit the Temple of the Goddess of Life, Yatina… Anything else?”
“Third, Fiona Carter has enslaved a cyclops…”
Kenneth Carter waved his hand. “I already know about that. I’ve dealt with that cyclops before. He’s a bit tricky, but as long as we have enough people, he’s not hard to handle.”
“That’s it, that’s all I know.” Logan Bennett spread his hands.
Kenneth Carter crossed his arms, resting his chin on one hand. After thinking for a moment, he said, “Logan Bennett, I hope what you said about the treasure is true. Otherwise, even if I don’t kill you, those mercenaries who find out they’ve been tricked will take your life. And mercenaries have especially cruel ways of torturing people…”
Logan Bennett smiled slightly. He wasn’t worried about the treasure; Fiona Carter was definitely rich. Maybe not as much as he claimed, but certainly not little.
To boost Kenneth Carter’s confidence, Logan Bennett added, “Don’t forget, every so often, someone comes looking for trouble with Fiona Carter. Over the years, there must have been three or four hundred people, right? All of them fully armed and well-prepared. The stuff stripped from them must add up to a pretty substantial fortune.”
Kenneth Carter’s eyes lit up and he nodded. “You’re right!”
He thought of his former comrade Derek Smith, that wild mage who had a beautiful staff said to be worth six gold crowns. That staff must be in Fiona Carter’s hands now.
Thinking of this, Kenneth Carter extended his palm to Logan Bennett. “May the goddess of luck, Xinti, bless us!”
Logan Bennett was momentarily stunned, but quickly understood and slapped his palm against Kenneth Carter’s. “Let us mortals handle mortal affairs, and leave the rest to Lady Xinti.”
Kenneth Carter was taken aback, then burst out laughing and praised, “Well said!”
Logan Bennett thought to himself, “It seems there are many gods in this world. In just this short conversation, I’ve learned about the goddess of life, Yatina, and the goddess of luck, Xinti. I really wonder how vast the world outside is?”
Chapter 008 Foolish Girl
The plan had been set; it was time to put it into action.
Logan Bennett bid farewell to Kenneth Carter and staggered off, ‘stumbling’ as he ran madly toward White Stone Castle.
The terrain of Echo Valley was rugged, with dense vegetation, often interspersed with thorny brambles, and the ground was littered with sharp rocks and sunken pits. Logan Bennett paid no attention to any of this and just ran as fast as he could.
His thin clothes were torn to rags, his skin was slashed and bleeding, and his hair was as messy as straw—he looked as wretched as could be.
When Logan Bennett finally reached the back gate of White Stone Castle, he fell hard on the flagstone ground, which was cold and hard in the winter. His knee hit the stone, sending a sharp pain through him!
Logan Bennett seemed completely oblivious to the pain, scrambling up and continuing to run.
On the second floor of the castle, Logan Bennett ran into Vera Smith.
The girl covered her mouth in shock, staring at Logan Bennett in disbelief.
“There are intruders in the back mountain valley!”
Logan Bennett blurted out quickly, then dashed off like the wind toward the castle’s spire—he had to warn Fiona Carter.
He scrambled up the spiral staircase, half crawling, half rolling, and reached the wide corridor before the spire’s main door. He had only taken a few steps down the corridor before he fell hard again.
“Huff~ huff~ huff~~”
The cyclops Grant Howard happened to witness this scene and burst out laughing. This little thing couldn’t even walk straight—how utterly foolish! He, Grant Howard, would never make such a rookie mistake.
Logan Bennett struggled to his feet and shouted, “Lord Grant Howard, I am Logan Bennett. I must see the master. There are intruders in the back mountain—powerful warriors!”
“Ah~~~~~”
Grant Howard yawned, his huge single eye blinking. His massive body shifted aside, revealing the spire’s main door behind him.
Logan Bennett didn’t have time to be afraid and limped toward the door.
As he passed by Grant Howard, he suddenly felt something slippery and cold on his leg. Looking down, he saw the cyclops lying on the ground, his lizard-like agile tongue darting out to lick the blood oozing from the wounds on Logan Bennett’s thigh.
The slimy sensation made Logan Bennett shudder all over. He was terrified that Grant Howard might lose control, bite through his thigh, and then, in a frenzy, tear his body to shreds.
He quickened his pace, escaping Grant Howard’s tongue, and then knocked hard on the door.
“Dong~ dong~ dong~”
