Chapter 18

There is no doubt that the scroll records a spell, and it is very likely an offensive spell.

Perhaps, to Fiona Carter, this spell is laughably weak and not worth mentioning, but Logan Bennett believes that everyone has weaknesses and moments of carelessness. As long as you seize the opportunity, even a small dinner knife can be deadly, let alone an offensive spell.

"Unfurl the scroll," Logan Bennett silently recited in his heart.

The scroll on the ground floated up and slowly opened. On its surface, many beautiful and mysterious pale red patterns were drawn. Most of them were intact, with a small portion missing due to damage to the scroll.

Logan Bennett stared intently at the pale red patterns, lost in thought.

"What exactly is this spell? How is it triggered? How do I control it after activation? How powerful is it? What are the limitations when using it?"

All sorts of doubts arose one after another, converging into four words: completely clueless.

It’s been five years, and Fiona Carter has taught Logan Bennett a total of three real spells. First, Levitation; second, Rust Removal; third, Sharpening.

Other than these three basic enchantment spells, there were only some fragmented spellcasting techniques, and none of this knowledge was of any help in solving the current problem.

Since he knew nothing, all that was left was experimentation—a lot of experimentation.

Logan Bennett focused his mind and extended his mana toward the scroll.

Extending mana is a very peculiar process. Specifically, it feels as if your body hasn’t moved at all, but you feel as though your hand has already reached out.

The tactile sensation of this virtual ‘hand’ is quite strange. Wherever the mana goes, you can sense cold, heat, vibration, brightness, your own movement speed, changes in direction—these physical properties. If the target is a living being, you can even sense their emotions, experiencing a bizarre state of ‘empathy.’

For example, once, Logan Bennett tried to touch a dying, frozen mouse with his mana, and he actually felt extremely cold himself, his whole body going numb.

In short, mana is somewhat like what people on Earth call the ‘sixth sense.’

Back to the main topic.

Logan Bennett’s mana hand carefully, slowly, and gently touched the pale red lines on the scroll. All sorts of strange sensations flooded into Logan Bennett’s mind.

‘This part is resisting my mana input... but there’s also a bit of attraction, like it’s playing hard to get?’

‘Hmm? I can feel vibrations here—high-frequency vibrations. The frequency is very steady, tingly, itchy... What the heck is this!’

‘Oh~ this part is interesting, there’s a suction feeling, and it’s really strong~ half my mana is gone... Wait~ it’s starting to spin. Ah~ spinning so fast~ dizzy, really dizzy, damn, this is more intense than a roller coaster. No, it’s out of control, so hot~ so hot~~~ ah!!!’

Before Logan Bennett could react, the surface of the scroll suddenly emitted a red light, rapidly growing brighter. At a spot where a pale red line was broken, a jet of bright yellow flame suddenly shot out. One of the jets hit Logan Bennett’s face directly, roasting his skin thoroughly, even burning his cornea white—his eyes went completely blind.

Logan Bennett hurriedly withdrew his mana, feeling a bit of itchiness on his face. Instinctively, he reached up to touch it, and his hand felt something slick and greasy, as if there was an extra layer of skin.

Even though he couldn’t see, he could guess that this thing was his own facial skin.

"It spits fire~ must be a fire spell scroll. Just one blast roasted my face—this is pretty powerful!" Logan Bennett was not alarmed, but delighted.

"But, how can mana be used to spin? That’s such a bizarre operation."

Even though everything had stopped, Logan Bennett still felt the world spinning. He couldn’t even tell which way was up or down, let alone which direction was north.

"Heal. Again."

With a thought, Logan Bennett’s injuries were fully healed, his spent mana replenished, and the scroll that had just been destroyed was restored as well—everything was as good as new.

This is the greatest advantage of the thought laboratory: here, he could conduct all kinds of high-risk experiments without any worries, with an endless supply of experimental materials at his disposal.

He carefully recalled the sensations from just now.

‘The whole process lasted... about, seems like 3 seconds. No, my timekeeping is too imprecise, that could be dangerous. Let’s get a stopwatch!’

‘Thunk~’

A black digital stopwatch appeared in Logan Bennett’s hand, a Casio, looking exactly like the one in Logan Bennett’s memory.

‘Not bad, not bad. Hmm~~ 3 seconds, and 60% of my mana was consumed. That’s a huge drain—doesn’t that mean I can only use it once?’

‘The flame shot out from the broken part of the scroll, which means this area needs some lines patched up. I’ll try fixing it and see what happens.’

He connected the broken lines, grabbed the stopwatch, and continued the experiment.

The calm lasted only three seconds... to be precise, 2.940 seconds.

"Boom~~"

The spell scroll exploded in midair, and a dark red, extremely hot shockwave surged out in all directions. Logan Bennett’s body was blasted more than two meters into the air by the fire wave, spun 720 degrees, and with a ‘splat,’ crashed to the ground. His clothes turned to flames, his flesh sizzled with oil, and the air was filled with the rich aroma of roasted meat.

"Heal~"
