Chapter 20

After a busy day, Emily Foster had just returned to her room. However, she didn’t have time to rest; instead, she took out today’s account book to check the records. Because Henry Clark had incurred a huge debt outside, Emily Foster wanted to pay it off as soon as possible. So these past few days, she had been inventorying the assets of the Prince’s residence—selling whatever could be sold, discarding what couldn’t, fully displaying the decisiveness and boldness of a general’s daughter.

“After selling the animal park, we should be able to make a profit of 8,300 strings of coins. Adding the assets already liquidated, we should be able to raise about 30,000 strings. That leaves a gap of just over 33,000 strings. Even if I sell the dowry I brought with me, there will still be a shortfall of more than 20,000 strings.” Holding a brush in her hand, Emily Foster muttered to herself, calculating how to pay off the Prince’s residence’s debts. But in the end, she couldn’t help but shake her head in frustration. If she weren’t forced to the last resort, she really didn’t want to sell her dowry, especially since some of it was very precious—her mother had told her to save it for her future children.

“To marry someone like Henry Clark, I’d rather die than let him touch me. How could there be any children in the future? Since that’s the case, the dowry is useless anyway. I might as well sell it to pay off the debt.” Emily Foster suddenly muttered to herself, a look of determination appearing on her face. Then she added her dowry to the account book.

Just as Emily Foster was keeping the accounts, her personal maid Lucy came over and whispered, “Princess, it’s already dinnertime. You were so busy at noon that you didn’t have time to eat. You must be hungry now. Why not eat first and then take care of these things?”

Hearing Lucy’s words, Emily Foster also felt a bit hungry. She looked up and smiled, “Alright, Lucy, go to the dining room and prepare dinner. I’ll be there right away!”

“Yes!” Lucy replied and turned to leave. Originally, Little Daisy and Lucy were both personal maids serving Emily Foster, but Henry Clark also needed someone to take care of him, and Emily Foster didn’t trust the original maids of the Prince’s residence. So she could only send her most trusted Little Daisy to Henry Clark.

Emily Foster stretched in her chair, then put away the account book and walked through the corridor toward the dining room. But just as she reached the entrance, she suddenly heard the laughter of Lucy and Little Daisy inside, mixed with Henry Clark’s voice. This made Emily Foster’s expression darken. She didn’t like her close attendants getting too close to Henry Clark, because as far as she knew, Henry Clark had always been harsh with servants and maids, often beating them for the slightest reason. She didn’t want her own family’s attendants, who came with her as part of her dowry, to suffer grievances in the Prince’s residence.

Thinking of this, Emily Foster quickly walked into the dining room, only to be stunned by the scene inside. She saw Henry Clark sitting at the table with dinner laid out before him. Little Daisy was standing beside Henry Clark, holding a little black dog in her arms, while her personal maid Lucy was carefully feeding rice soup to the little black dog with a small dish. Henry Clark sat to the side, smiling as he watched, occasionally instructing the two girls not to feed too quickly, so the little black dog wouldn’t choke.

Seeing the little black dog in Little Daisy’s arms, Emily Foster could hardly believe it. Clearly, this little black dog had eaten arsenic, and two hours had already passed—it should have been dead by now. Yet here it was, lively in Little Daisy’s arms, showing no signs of poisoning except for being a bit listless.

“Fourth Sister, look at this little black dog—it’s so cute! It was almost dead, but in the end, the Prince and I saved it together!” Little Daisy, with sharp eyes, saw Emily Foster come in and immediately ran over happily to show off her new pet.

At first, Emily Foster suspected that Henry Clark had found a similar puppy elsewhere to trick her, but hearing Little Daisy’s words immediately ruled out that possibility. Still, the thought that the utterly useless Henry Clark in her eyes could actually cure arsenic poisoning was hard for Emily Foster to believe. Had she underestimated Henry Clark all along?

Henry Clark also noticed the shock on Emily Foster’s face, which immediately gave him a sense of satisfaction. During this period, Henry Clark had been suppressed by Emily Foster in every way, but this time he finally managed to turn the tables. He had already learned from Little Daisy that Emily Foster had studied medicine since childhood. Although he couldn’t understand why a noble young lady would study medicine, as long as Emily Foster liked it, she would surely be interested in how he saved the little black dog. Now, all he had to do was calmly wait for Emily Foster to come and ask him for advice.

Chapter 10: Emily Foster’s Doubt

“How exactly did you cure the little black dog’s arsenic poisoning?” Emily Foster’s patience was even shorter than Henry Clark had expected. As soon as they finished dinner, Emily Foster immediately asked Henry Clark.

“Are you talking to me?” Henry Clark deliberately dug at his ear, putting on a look of utter disbelief and asked maliciously. Previously, whenever he spoke with Emily Foster, it was always him asking questions and her impatiently answering a few words. This was the first time Emily Foster had taken the initiative to speak to him, so naturally, Henry Clark wanted to seize the moment.
