Chapter 14

Hearing this strange answer, the middle-aged driver smiled silently and said, “Alright then, just let me know as soon as you’ve decided. Even if I drive around aimlessly, I’ll still have to charge you, so you’d better hurry up!”

The driver uncle even cracked a joke with them, and after speaking, slowly started the car along the road.

Not in the mood to listen to the driver’s humor, Emily Harris, who had just been chilled by the breeze outside, let out a soft “mm,” seeming a bit more awake. Hearing her make a sound, Ben Carter quickly grabbed her arm and shook it, trying to wake her up, and said to her, “Emily, wake up, tell me where you live, I’ll take you home.”

But after hearing him, Emily Harris didn’t react at all. With no other choice, he had to use both hands to shake her more forcefully from the side, hoping she would wake up.

Unfortunately, things didn’t go as he wished. Emily Harris did speak, but she was talking in her sleep: “Don’t bother me, I’m so sleepy, let me sleep.” After saying this, she waved her hand as if shooing away a fly, and happened to touch Ben Carter. She put both hands around his neck, as if hugging him, then leaned her whole body against him. Clearly, she felt much more comfortable this way. She hummed twice and continued her sweet dreams.

That’s it, she really fell asleep. Ben Carter knew that it was almost impossible to wake a drunk person, but still held onto a sliver of hope and shouted in Emily Harris’s ear, “Emily, wake up, come on, wake up!” But the only response was Emily Harris’s gentle breathing, waves of sweet, wine-scented breath brushing past his nose, with no other reaction at all. In the dim light shining in from outside the car, he could vaguely see her beautiful, sleeping face with a satisfied smile, as if she had fallen asleep in a good mood.

Although Ben Carter had plenty of ways to deal with those hooligans, when it came to the drunken Emily Harris, he was completely at a loss.

“Young man, no need to call her anymore. Your girlfriend seems to be drunk, you won’t be able to wake her. Just take her home, or take her to your place. Besides, drunk people need someone to look after them. Where do you live?”

The driver said with a smile from the front.

In the driver’s eyes, they were just a young couple—a slightly disheveled young man and a young woman, the typical city lovers. He had seen plenty of drunken young couples wandering the city streets; every month he drove several pairs like this.

There was no other way. It seemed he’d have to take her to his own place first. Luckily, he rented an apartment outside; if he lived in the school dorm, it would be a real hassle.

The college was pretty relaxed about student life management. They provided dorms but also allowed students to rent off-campus. Of course, if anything happened, you had to take responsibility yourself.

Ben Carter didn’t want to be bound by those rules, so from the start he rented a place off-campus. If it had been a few years earlier, he would have had to get a hotel room, but that would have been risky—if the police came by on patrol, it would be a big problem.

He gently shifted Emily Harris’s head to rest more comfortably on his shoulder so she could sleep better, then gave the driver his address: 123 Xingguang Road.

Apparently, the driver knew the place and didn’t ask further, heading straight for the destination. He even chatted with Ben Carter a bit: “Young man, you’re still a student, right? And you already have a girlfriend? Young people these days are really something, starting relationships so early.”

It seemed this uncle was quite open-minded, and his words were witty and humorous.

“No, she’s not my girlfriend, she’s my older sister. By the way, uncle, how did you know I’m a student?”

Ben Carter explained, then asked his question.

“Oh, lots of students live there. You know, there’s nothing else around here, but there are plenty of students. After a while, we drivers get good at spotting them. You look about the right age and live there, so of course you’re a student. Back in the day, I was a college student too, but unfortunately I didn’t finish my studies, otherwise I wouldn’t be out here driving a cab.”

The driver uncle was clearly very talkative, chatting away non-stop, regardless of whether Ben Carter responded.

At first, Ben Carter chatted a bit with the enthusiastic driver, but after a while, he dozed off too. He’d had quite a bit to drink tonight, and now the alcohol was kicking in.

The driver uncle talked to himself for a while, and when he didn’t hear any sound from the back seat, he turned around and saw that both of them had fallen asleep. He smiled, said nothing more, and drove quietly. Luckily, there weren’t many people on the road at night, so he rarely had to honk. Clearly, he was a considerate uncle.

“Hey, young man, wake up, we’re here.”

The driver uncle stopped the car and reached back to nudge Ben Carter.

Fortunately, his alertness was still pretty good. Even though he was a bit drunk, as soon as the driver uncle touched him, he woke up. He looked up and saw they had arrived. Then he checked and saw Emily Harris was still asleep. After paying the fare, he dragged her out of the car—she still wanted to stay and wouldn’t get up.
