Chapter 7

He was pondering whether this chief of the Liuyang gang was a friend or an enemy of his master Edward Miller. Suddenly, he saw a burly man with a bristling beard leading more than ten people hurrying over. All of them were dressed in mourning white, with white cloths tied around their foreheads according to custom. The burly man also carried a bundle, making him stand out. They too had a pass, and just swaggered right into The Spencer Family, which gave him a shock. He remembered that this burly, bearded man was precisely Frank Henry's trusted subordinate, skilled in wielding a double-headed spear.

Evelyn Spencer had just had a thought: “How could he have tracked us here?” Then he suddenly realized, exclaiming inwardly, “It’s my master who’s waiting for them!”

Edward Miller had been extremely cautious along the way, and Evelyn Spencer didn’t believe that in this ancient society there could be any kind of tracking device. It should have been nearly impossible to catch up with their master and disciple pair. But Edward Miller was almost certainly aware that Frank Henry’s men, after his death, would bring the body back to a certain place, so he had come ahead of time to lie in wait.

“I wonder how my master is now? Is he in danger?” Just as this thought crossed his mind, he heard a clear whistle, and a slightly childish voice called out: “Paul Stewart! You didn’t expect me to catch up, did you?”

The burly, bearded man and his dozen or so men fled in panic from The Spencer Family, with Edward Miller chasing after them, wielding a single saber. In an instant, he killed several people, looking awe-inspiring and murderous, making Evelyn Spencer's blood boil with excitement—he almost wanted to rush out and join his master in the fight.

Edward Miller's saber technique was astonishingly fast. In the blink of an eye, he had killed all the others, leaving only the burly, bearded man.

The burly man looked terrified and tried to escape, but Edward Miller had his eyes fixed on him, giving him no chance to get away. With only this one opponent left, Edward Miller displayed the most exquisite moves of his family’s saber technique. With a single slash along the spear shaft, he severed both of the man’s arms, then followed with another chop that took off his head.

After killing him, the young man let out a long whistle and dashed away, disappearing in an instant.

Evelyn Spencer witnessed all of this and couldn’t help but feel secretly alarmed, thinking, “Good thing I didn’t go out to help. My master already had the upper hand. If I had rushed out, he might have been forced to protect me, which could have put him at a disadvantage. Of course, it’s also possible that, in his eagerness for revenge, my master wouldn’t care about his disciple’s life or death, which would be even worse.”

Someone had killed in broad daylight on the street—it was truly shocking. The street had long since emptied, and not even anyone from The Spencer Family came out.

Since crossing over, Evelyn Spencer had only been a shop assistant for a few days, but those days had left a deep impression on him, letting him experience what it truly meant to be terrified of poverty.

Not long ago, he had rifled through a corpse, but because he left in a hurry, the money he found was left in a pile of grass outside the shop, so he was still quite penniless.

Faced with this situation, he couldn’t hold back any longer. He ran over to the burly, bearded man, first yanking off the bundle from him, then searching the bodies of the other men. He actually found five money pouches, with the burly man’s pouch being especially heavy.

After this “business” was done, Evelyn Spencer took off running, and in just a short while, he could see the inn in the distance.

He was about to dash into the inn when a hand reached from behind and grabbed his collar, pulling him into a nearby alley.

Evelyn Spencer was about to cry out in alarm, but then saw his master’s familiar face and quickly covered his own mouth.

Edward Miller smiled slightly and said sternly, “You’re really bold, daring to go and loot money.”

Evelyn Spencer wanted to argue, but realized that such greedy behavior had probably already annoyed his master, so any excuse would be pointless. He just gave an awkward laugh and said, “Your disciple is just scared of being poor.”

Edward Miller hadn’t expected his disciple to be so honest. He chuckled and said, “I killed Paul Stewart and wiped out the entire The Spencer Family. The experts from the The Henry Family will surely rush over as soon as they hear the news. We must leave at once.”

Neither master nor disciple was the type to dawdle. The luggage at the inn wasn’t worth much anyway, so they didn’t even bother with the big cart, nor did they return to the inn. They hurried straight out of the city, following the main road for half a day until they came upon a ruined temple.

The temple had been abandoned for a long time; only the main hall was somewhat intact, with most of the roof still in place.

Evelyn Spencer dropped his bundle, gathered some weeds nearby, and spread them out in a corner of the main hall. He first invited Edward Miller to sit, then plopped himself down on the pile of weeds, gasping for breath, finally feeling a bit relieved.

These past few days had been a rollercoaster. The vendettas and killings in this world’s jianghu were far too frequent—he’d seen more dead bodies than there were murder cases in a big city back on Earth in an entire year.

Calming himself, Evelyn Spencer took out a money pouch and was about to open it to check the contents when he noticed a corner of something sticking out of the bundle. It looked like some kind of paper. Unable to resist, he opened the bundle, and saw thick stacks of palm-sized paper, some new, some old.

Evelyn Spencer pulled one out and saw that it was finely printed, with an official seal. The writing was different from Earth’s script, but he could somehow read it. Looking closely, he was shocked!

These things were actually flying cash notes issued by the Great Lang court. Aside from the flying cash, there was nothing else in the bundle.
