Mr. White is called Anthony, nicknamed Adam, and he is Chris's college classmate as well as his best friend.
“Cell phone?”
Of course, Chris knew what a cell phone was, he just wasn’t in the habit of carrying one.
If Adam hadn’t brought it up, he might not even have remembered such a thing existed.
“Chris, I put your phone in your luggage bag, but it’s already out of battery. Didn’t you see it?”
Bruno reminded him from the side.
Only then did Chris remember, and he quickly said, “Wait a moment, I’ll go check.”
With that, he went back inside.
He found his backpack in the study and fished out an iPhone from inside.
Sure enough, it was dead.
He walked out with the phone, but after two steps, he suddenly turned back and grabbed the soul-nourishing lamp from the desk, then hurried out.
“It’s dead, I forgot to charge it.”
“No worries, you can charge it in the car… Where are you guys going?”
“The funeral home, I was just planning to check it out.”
Adam grinned, “Then take my car, 1967 classic model.”
“So, you came to see me today just to show off your car?”
“Hahaha, of course!” Adam laughed heartily. “This is my reward for enduring my uncle’s grueling training.”
Chris walked over, looking at the fiery red body and classic curves, and couldn’t help but whistle.
“Now you’re really proud, she’s a real beauty.”
“Of course, you have no idea how tough my uncle’s training was. If it weren’t for her, I definitely couldn’t have stuck it out.”
“Get in, get in!”
Without another word, Chris jumped into the car.
A Ford Mustang?
He used to think a Ford Mustang was pretty nice, but after seeing Adam’s car, the Mustang didn’t seem so appealing anymore.
Bruno and Mia exchanged a smile and got in as well.
The two cars sped off one after the other, accompanied by the roar of the Shelby.
Chapter 5 Ghost Funeral Home
Adam drove, eyes fixed ahead.
Chris sat in the passenger seat, not sure what to say.
This was his first real contact with the original owner’s circle of friends. According to the original’s memories, he and Adam were not only classmates, but also roommates in the same dorm, and teammates on the Coney Island campus football team. Of course, the Coney Island campus team in New York City was pretty bad, not even able to make it into the NCAA main tournament.
Adam was the quarterback, Chris was the running back.
The two forged a deep friendship over four years together.
Adam was an Italian-American, from a well-off family. Both his parents were bank executives, and his uncle was in the U.S. military.
Every June or July, Adam would join his uncle for a round of training, which was also why, after Chris’s accident, Adam didn’t show up right away.
“Hey, you seem a bit off.”
“What?”
“I don’t know how to put it, just feels like you’re not quite the same as before. But that’s normal, anyone would change a bit after something like this. I just want to say, Bro, we’re brothers. No matter what you’re going through, I’ve got your back.”
Chris turned to look at Adam, and a sudden warmth rose in his heart.
Two thousand five hundred years ago, a young man had said something similar to him.
“无疾, don’t mind those petty people, I’ll help you.”
Back then, after his grandfather passed away, he lost his support in the divine palace and left Sangtai in disgrace to take up the post of Spirit Warden.
That young man was called Howard Brown, who later became George Washington.
“Bro, I’m fine.”
Chris smiled and said, “It’s all in the past, I’ll pull myself together.”
“So, are you still going to be a forensic investigator?”
“Huh?”
“The day after tomorrow you have to report to the medical examiner’s office. Have you decided whether to be a coroner or a forensic investigator?”
Only then did Chris remember that the original had passed the medical examiner’s office exam in May.
The American forensic system is a diversified system where medical examiners and coroners operate in parallel.
There are two types of forensic professionals: one works for government agencies, like the police or military, which have their own forensic departments; and to ensure judicial fairness, there are also commercial forensic departments that can provide forensic documentation. Most of these commercial forensic institutions are run by hospitals or funeral homes.
Of course, these forensic professionals need to have medical qualifications.
The other type, called coroner, does not require medical qualifications. But in terms of authority, they’re not as highly regarded as true forensic doctors.
These forensic professionals usually have to pass the state medical examiner’s office assessment.
Those with medical qualifications can take the exam to become a coroner/medical examiner; those without can take the exam to become a coroner/forensic investigator.
Chris earned two degrees in college.
One was in Forensic Science, the other in Funeral Service.
So, he wasn’t qualified to become a medical examiner, but he could take the exam for forensic investigator.
“I almost forgot!”
Chris scratched his head and looked at Adam, asking, “What about you? Have you decided to be a forensic investigator?”
