It was an apartment building with only about three floors, nestled among the surrounding tall buildings.
This was a small building that looked quite ordinary from the outside, pitch black, with no lights on, as if it had long been uninhabited.
William Carter slowed down a bit, taking a deep look at the building, a shadow flickering in his eyes.
Then he didn’t linger any longer, picked up speed, and quickly left.
Ten minutes later, the jeep stopped in front of an inconspicuous small building in Scrap Iron City.
Judging by the address, this was the base of the Mysterious Object Handling Squad stationed in Scrap Iron City.
However, compared to the mysterious and eerie nature of their work, this small building seemed far too normal.
When William Carter walked into this little base, what he saw was a warm and cozy scene.
At the entrance, there was a small sign with black characters on a white background: Scrap Iron City Environmental Protection Workstation.
“Environmental protection?”
Looking at the name of this little base, William Carter immediately formed a preliminary impression of his colleagues here.
For reasons of secrecy and safety, these action squads stationed in various cities often chose their own disguises. As for these disguises, there were no strict rules or requirements from above, so each squad could choose their own style, and in the process, displayed strong personal flair—there were all kinds of forms.
Some disguised themselves as security companies—these were the ones with a strong sense of guardianship.
Some disguised themselves as detective agencies—these were the ones with a strong curiosity about supernatural matters.
Some disguised themselves as hunter guilds—these valued bounties more than honor.
It was even said that some disguised themselves as slaughterhouses, and their squad was always at the top of the supernatural creature hunting rankings...
This little base in front of him had chosen the name of an environmental protection organization, so literally, it could be understood as:
They cared more about loafing around and goofing off?
William Carter let out a gentle breath, entered through the modern-looking glass door, and looked around at the unit he was about to join.
Inside was a reception hall, with a curved desk behind which was empty—no one was there.
Passing through the reporting hall, he found a small courtyard, where two people were playing billiards with cues.
One had a thick beard but not a single hair on his head.
The other had long, smooth black hair tied in a ponytail at the back, with fair and flawless skin—more handsome than a beauty.
William Carter stared intently at his chest and crotch, making sure his gaze wasn’t being perverted.
He really was a man more handsome than a beauty.
Nearby, a man weighing at least three hundred pounds was squatting in front of a stove, fanning the fire. On top was a pot bubbling with the aroma of meat.
It was them.
William Carter recalled the information he had read and nodded to himself.
Then he put on a polite smile, stepped forward, and said to the bearded man who had just turned his head, “I…”
“If you have business, go to the administrative office. We don’t take junk here, and we don’t dig stinky ditches.”
“Uh, that’s not it. I’m looking for Captain Owen.”
“Looking for Captain Owen?”
As soon as he heard William Carter call out the captain’s name, the man’s expression immediately turned serious: “If you’re here to collect gambling debts, come back after work!”
“?”
William Carter felt like he had accidentally learned a bit more about this Director Owen.
At the same time, he felt like he’d come to the right place.
Chapter 6: Wild Espers
Shaking his head with a smile, he raised his voice a bit and said solemnly, “My name is William Carter, and I’m here to report in.”
“Report in?”
The bearded man was slightly surprised, put down his cue, looked William Carter up and down, and said, “So you’re the new transfer?”
As soon as he said this, the handsome opponent who had been playing billiards with the bearded man, as well as the fat man squatting by the stove watching the stew, both turned around in surprise, their curious eyes fixed on William Carter, sizing him up repeatedly.
William Carter smiled and nodded to everyone. “Yes, hello, seniors.”
“Oh wow…”
The bearded man’s gaze swept over William Carter’s somewhat worn jacket and slightly youthful face. He seemed surprised, but quickly covered it up, his expression softening a bit. He smiled and shook William Carter’s hand, saying, “Sorry, I didn’t expect you to be so young. The captain mentioned you’d be coming. Wait here for a moment, I’ll go call him from his office…”
William Carter quickly replied politely, “It’s fine, why don’t you keep playing? I can go myself.”
“No way.”
The bearded man shook his head, pursed his lips mysteriously, and, cue in hand, walked toward the end of the courtyard.
Up the steps was an office with the door ajar. The bearded man eavesdropped for a moment, then suddenly pushed the door open:
“Captain, are you in?”
“Ah…”
A woman’s scream came from inside.
Immediately after, there was a commotion in the office, and a pink piece of women’s underwear was thrown onto the bearded man’s head.
“?”
William Carter stared at the scene before him, momentarily stunned. “In broad daylight, really…”
“Oh my, oh my, what are you doing, what are you doing…”
