Chapter 18

“So it was her?”

Chapter 10: The Family Massacre

William Carter was a bit puzzled. How did this intern, whom he hadn’t seen at the station during the day, suddenly appear in the apartment he had just rented? And she even came in with a gun. This girl seemed a bit odd—she was quite pretty, and the fabric of her clothes along with a few inconspicuous little accessories looked rather expensive, but she still looked dirty.

She even had the smell of a pig-feeding aunt from a training camp?

Really strange.

But although William Carter had questions in his mind, he didn’t dwell on them. He picked up the phone and dialed Captain Owen.

The call connected, and he briefly explained the situation.

On Captain Owen’s end, the sound of “clack-clack” mahjong tiles could be heard, mixed with a few mumbled curses:

“Whoever wins with a cheap hand is a bastard…”

“Eight dots…”

“Won…”

“Hey, you just cursed…”

“Heh, that’s right, I’d rather be a bastard who wins money…”

“……”

Marveling at the captain’s “excellent” card-playing ethics, William Carter knew this wasn’t a good time to bother his superior, so he kept it as brief as possible.

Listening to William Carter’s report, Captain Owen responded with a few “mm”s, then suddenly raised his voice: “Hmm?”

William Carter continued his report, also describing the girl’s condition.

Captain Owen immediately became tense: “What the hell?”

“What the hell!”

“What the hell…”

“……”

Finally, he blurted out, “I’ll be right there,” and hurriedly hung up.

“This boss is alright, really cares about his subordinates…”

William Carter sighed as he hung up the phone.

After thinking for a moment, he carried the fellow intern over to the sofa to let her lie down, then continued painting his wall.

Not long after, William Carter heard the sound of a sidecar motorcycle screeching to a stop downstairs, followed by hurried footsteps running up the stairs.

Captain Owen, sweating profusely, appeared at William Carter’s door. On his refined and handsome face was a bright lipstick mark from who knows where. He first glanced nervously at the fainted Evelyn Young, then anxiously asked, “What happened here?”

“Well…”

Faced with the question, William Carter felt a bit awkward. He pointed at the wall: “I was painting the wall.”

“She suddenly barged in…”

“Then, before I could even ask what she was doing, she fainted…”

“……”

“She fainted?”

Captain Owen was clearly a bit skeptical about this answer, but after looking around the freshly painted little room and seeing William Carter with a bit of paint on his face, he gradually accepted it. At the same time, new doubts arose in his mind…

“You… you like such bright colors?”

Captain Owen looked awkwardly at the half-painted wall, his expression odd.

“Yeah…”

William Carter looked at the bright red paint, feeling a bit proud. “It’s so festive.”

“Really feels like home, doesn’t it?”

“……”

Captain Owen’s expression suddenly became a bit strange.

This was a murder house, once the scene of a case that shocked the entire Scrap Iron City.

Because of its notorious reputation, this little apartment building was still a place people didn’t dare look at directly.

The person involved in the old case had returned to Scrap Iron City, insisted on renting this apartment, and then, on a rainy night like this, under dim lights, painted the apartment walls bit by bit into a blinding, blood-red color…

…Yeah, makes perfect sense.

Not only did Captain Owen think it made sense, but Sister Lucy and Bearded Uncle Jack, who arrived soon after, also thought it made sense.

The two of them checked Evelyn Young, confirmed she had only fainted from fright and that her gun belt was securely fastened, then finally relaxed a bit. They immediately arranged for someone to take her back to the station to rest, and planned to give her some counseling when she woke up.

She’s so young, can’t let her be left with any trauma.

“So this is the intern you said started at the same time as me?”

Captain Owen didn’t rush to leave, and William Carter paused his painting, politely poured a glass of water for his superior, and sat down.

“Sigh, not the same.”

Captain Owen scratched his neck irritably and said, “You’re from a proper training camp, but she…”

He didn’t finish, but William Carter understood.

So young, already interning at the mysterious Foundation branch, specially issued a gun, but still so timid…

He tactfully didn’t pry further.

But Captain Owen, after shaking his head slightly, took out a pack of cigarettes and offered one to William Carter, explaining with a wry smile, “We’re all on the same side, so I won’t hide it from you. This girl’s background is anything but simple. You’d better be careful not to offend her in the future…”

“After all, she’s the heiress of the prestigious Level-3 Ye Family Consortium…”

“……”

“A consortium heiress?”

William Carter was a bit surprised.
