Chapter 9

Grace Clark was both shocked and furious. Emma Clark was her eldest brother, but he had none of the qualities of an elder brother. He was skilled in eating, drinking, whoring, and gambling, but not in thinking. Relying on the reputation of the Cao family, he swaggered around Xudu, causing the family no end of trouble. She looked down on this brother from the bottom of her heart, always calling him by name without a trace of respect. Now, hearing that Emma Clark had actually sold the pharmacy, she was nearly beside herself with rage.

The carriage sped along and soon arrived in front of the Cao Family Pharmacy. Grace Clark nimbly got out of the carriage and saw that the pharmacy was in utter chaos, with no order at all. An elderly man with graying hair was standing in the hall, clutching a young man’s sleeve and pleading bitterly, “Jiyuan, I beg you, this is not something to be done rashly. Think it over again, wait until the young lady arrives before making a decision, all right?”

The young man looked two or three years older than Grace Clark, but his temper was extremely fiery. He shook off the old man’s grip and shouted, “Don’t push your luck! What young lady, young lady? In the Cao family, I’m the eldest son, got it? Hurry up and bring me the deed.”

Just then, a servant hurried over, holding a box and cheering, “Young master, I found the deed!”

The old man saw this and shouted sternly, “Jack Reed, how could you—” Before he could finish, he clutched his chest and slowly collapsed. The young man cheered, snatched the box, and without so much as a glance at the old man, turned to leave the hall—only to suddenly stop in his tracks.

Standing at the entrance was none other than Grace Clark, her beautiful eyes wide with anger.

“Second sister, you’re here too.” The young man, though appearing arrogant, was somewhat intimidated by Grace Clark. He hid the box behind his back and tried to act calm, saying, “The head manager suddenly fell ill. You’d better go check on him.” As he spoke, he squeezed past Grace Clark.

“Emma Clark, stop right there,” Grace Clark called out sharply.

If I listened to you, I’d be your grandson.

Emma Clark had finally found a way to escape and was about to dash out the door when he saw a servant standing in the doorway, holding a bundle like a door plank, blocking his way. He couldn’t help but curse, “Useless servant, get out of my way!”

Eric Bennett immediately stepped back obediently, but in his panic, his grip loosened and the bundle fell.

Emma Clark jumped in fright. At a glance, he knew the bundle contained an incense burner—Grace Clark’s personal belonging. If it hit the ground, it would leave a dent; if it landed on his foot, it would be even worse.

He hurriedly stepped back, but suddenly felt a sharp pain in his ear—Grace Clark had grabbed him.

“Easy!” Emma Clark cried out, grimacing in pain. “Sister, take it easy!”

Before he could finish, he felt his legs give way and landed heavily on the ground, clutching his now-red ear. Emma Clark shouted, “Grace Clark, what are you doing?”

Grace Clark’s pretty face was icy as she stepped forward and glared at Emma Clark, saying, “Emma Clark, you have the nerve to ask me what I’m doing? Are you even human? Mr. Harris has served the Cao family for so many years—if not for merit, then for hard work. You made the old man faint from anger and just walked away without a care. Has your conscience been eaten by dogs?”

Emma Clark looked back and saw that the old man, Mr. Harris, was still lying on the ground. Edward Clark had already rushed over to help Mr. Harris up, calling his name repeatedly, but Mr. Harris showed no sign of movement.

A hint of guilt flashed in Emma Clark’s eyes, but he immediately clutched the box tightly and said, “Who says I’m not helping? I was just going to get a doctor for Mr. Harris.”

He struggled to his feet, but before he could take a step, he suddenly felt the box lighten in his hand. His face changed dramatically. “Grace Clark, give me back the box!”

Grace Clark snatched the box away and said coldly, “Fine, I’ll believe you’re going to get a doctor. You’d better pray that Mr. Harris is all right. But if anything happens to Mr. Harris, I’ll tell Father every single thing you’ve done these past few days!”

Emma Clark’s expression shifted slightly. He stared at the deed in Grace Clark’s hand, wanting to snatch it back but not daring to. He forced a smile and said, “It’s just the pharmacy. Why get a doctor? I think Mr. Harris…”

All he wanted was to take the deed and leave, but seeing Edward Clark had already laid Mr. Harris flat and was pinching his philtrum and calling his name, with Mr. Harris still unresponsive, he couldn’t continue.

Could it be that Mr. Harris was really scared to death?

Grace Clark was also alarmed. She quickly walked over and asked, “Edward Clark, how is Mr. Harris?”

“Young lady, Mr. Harris… Mr. Harris doesn’t look good.” Edward Clark felt for Mr. Harris’s pulse, but it was barely detectable, and he panicked.

“Think of something!” Grace Clark urged.

“I have a prescription, but it will take several hours to prepare.” Sweat beaded on Edward Clark’s forehead.

Seeing Mr. Harris’s breathing grow weaker, Grace Clark grew anxious. “I’m afraid Mr. Harris can’t hold on that long. Is there any other way?”

She knew that if Edward Clark had a solution, he would have used it already. Seeing the situation, she grew more worried, called out to Mr. Harris a few times, and when he still didn’t respond, she immediately turned and said, “Cui’er, go summon an imperial physician from the palace. Edward Clark, go prepare the medicine.”

Before Cui’er and Edward Clark could respond, someone said, “Young lady, this illness can’t wait. Why don’t I give it a try?”

Everyone was startled and turned to look. The speaker was Eric Bennett, to their surprise.

Seeing Eric Bennett walking over with the incense burner, Grace Clark could hardly believe her ears. After a moment, she said, “You know how to treat illnesses too?”

She truly hadn’t expected this.
