Everyone looked over and saw that, under the setting sun, Emma Clark's neck was slowly swelling as if being inflated, and Jack Reed's lips looked even more like two sausages hanging from his mouth. They couldn't help but be shocked.
Grace Clark had just thought that Eric Bennett was making a fuss over nothing, but now, seeing her eldest brother and Jack Reed in such a state, her heart skipped a beat. She looked down at her own fingers—fortunately, they were only slightly red and swollen, with nothing else unusual.
“What should we do, Eric Bennett!” Grace Clark cried anxiously.
Chapter Twelve: Saving Your 麻
The crowd was in an uproar. Grace Clark felt that probably only Eric Bennett could actually help. Seeing Emma Clark like this, although it was satisfying, after all, he was her big brother. If he had to die, he should at least die far away; dying at the gate of the Cao residence would be hard to explain to their father.
Eric Bennett had originally thought that this Eldest Master Clark had such a unique constitution that saving the world wouldn't be a problem for him. According to science, being stung by two hundred hornets would definitely be life-threatening, but this Eldest Master Clark had only been stung by one, so statistically, the chance of dying wasn't that high.
But seeing Emma Clark and Jack Reed in this state, Eric Bennett suddenly felt a chill in his heart and realized what the problem was.
These two guys had been drinking!
He didn't know if hornets were somehow incompatible with these two, but alcohol promotes blood circulation and would definitely accelerate the spread of the venom. Thinking of this, Eric Bennett sensed the seriousness of the situation and immediately said, “Mr. Parker.”
“Eric Bennett, what is it?” Mr. Parker was flustered too, thinking to himself that the young lady had just been stung, but luckily she was fine. If anything happened to the eldest young master, he, as the steward, might as well jump into the river.
“Please, Steward, quickly fetch some liquor and an embroidery needle, and also bring a wine bowl.” Eric Bennett had already forgotten his status as a servant.
Mr. Parker still remembered, but in the chaos, only this kid seemed calm. A drowning man will clutch at a straw, and a desperate patient will try any cure. Seeing the other servants still standing around in a daze, Mr. Parker shouted, “Why are you still standing there? Hurry and do as Eric Bennett says!”
The embroidery needle and liquor soon arrived. Without another word, Eric Bennett filled a bowl with wine. Emma Clark, seeing Eric Bennett approaching with the bowl, mumbled, “No more, no more, just save me already.”
Is your head full of water?
Still thinking about drinking at a time like this?
Eric Bennett couldn't help but laugh and cry. He put down the bowl, dipped the embroidery needle in the wine a few times for a simple disinfection.
He certainly understood the importance of disinfection, but given the limited conditions, this would have to do.
He turned Eldest Master's neck toward the setting sun and squinted to find the spot where the hornet had stung.
Earlier, Grace Clark had just brushed the hornet aside and was only stung by the stinger. But this guy had slapped the hornet dead, driving the whole stinger deep into his neck!
Eric Bennett frowned to himself and used the needle to open up the wound a bit, carefully removing all the broken pieces of the stinger.
Everyone held their breath, even Jack Reed endured without making a sound.
The slanting sunlight fell on Eric Bennett's brow and eyes, his face full of concentration.
Grace Clark was afraid Emma Clark would drop dead on the spot and stood there worried, but seeing Eric Bennett's methodical actions, she inexplicably felt more confident and less anxious. Using the sunlight to observe Eric Bennett's face, she suddenly realized that when this guy was focused, his face actually looked quite decent.
Her face flushed again, and Grace Clark, afraid others would notice, quickly looked away. Seeing everyone watching Eric Bennett, she quietly let out a sigh of relief.
After removing the stinger, Eric Bennett poured some wine on Emma Clark's neck and said to Mr. Parker, “Steward, find someone to suck the poison from his wound. Get out as much as you can.”
Without hesitation, Mr. Parker bit down on Emma Clark's neck.
Although William Clark didn't think much of this eldest young master and wanted Grace Clark to take over the family, Mr. Parker understood that daughters eventually marry out, and the Cao family would still belong to Eldest Master Clark in the future.
The others didn't understand the key point, but were deeply moved, thinking that Mr. Parker was truly loyal—he would give his life and even suck blood for the Cao family.
Eric Bennett used the same method on Jack Reed, but seeing his sausage-like lips, he hesitated a bit. Jack Reed was still somewhat conscious and mumbled, “Dan... Dan... yōshi... yōshi...”
Yōshi yōshi?
Eric Bennett thought this guy might have some Japanese blood and was praising his medical skills, but after listening for a while, he realized Jack Reed was just afraid of dying and “yōshi” probably meant “want to suck.” Jack Reed was asking him to help suck out the poison. Eric Bennett frowned, sighed, and whispered, “How about two strings of cash for this?”
Grace Clark's beautiful eyes immediately widened.
Jack Reed's life was at stake, so he nodded repeatedly. He was different from ordinary servants; being with Eldest Master, he was naturally much better off than the likes of Eric Bennett.
Eric Bennett stood up and said, “One string of cash to help Jack Reed suck out the poison. Anyone want to take the job?”
Taking advantage of someone’s illness to demand their life—Eric Bennett might not be as skilled as some modern black-market doctors, but if he didn’t take the opportunity to make a killing now, he’d feel he was missing out. This price was already a fifty percent commission.
“I’ll do it, I’ll do it!”
Brian Carter immediately stepped forward with a big bowl in hand. His monthly wage was only a few dozen coins, so the temptation of a string of cash was truly “yōshi yōshi.”
Putting down the bowl, Brian Carter grabbed Jack Reed's neck and gave him a standard International Workers’ Day liberation kiss from top to bottom, making everyone gag.
