The large pyramid-shaped building of the church had already come into view—now you want me to stop? Victory is right ahead, and you want me to stop now? Unless I’ve lost my mind!
“Don’t let him rush into the church!” The people chasing behind clearly realized what I was thinking. Judging by their tone, they didn’t seem to care about that one blue gold coin anymore; they just wanted to beat us up for the fun of it.
Fortunately, my natural strength isn’t just in my arms—my legs are just as powerful. Even while dragging someone along as I ran, I managed to reach the church doors before they could catch up.
Hmph! Once I’m home, I’m not afraid of anything. Even the city lord has to show respect to Pastor Dent. The actions of the crowd when they reached the church entrance confirmed my guess.
“Everyone, don’t act rashly, this is the church! But we don’t need to be afraid! They dined and dashed, we’re in the right! Even the church has to be reasonable!” The pretty girl stood at the front of the crowd, rallying those who had come with her.
Damn it! One day I’ll have you kneel before me and sing ‘Conquer’! I glared fiercely at this arrogant girl in front of me, imagining the day she’d be at my mercy.
“What’s going on here?” Amid the commotion, Pastor Dent came to the church entrance and asked in a deep voice. The open space outside the church instantly fell silent.
“This so-called servant of God ate and didn’t pay!” The girl immediately tried to throw dirt on me. “That’s right!” “Exactly!” “Some servant of God!” Voices of agreement rose from the crowd.
Dent turned to look at me and asked, “Is this true?”
Damn! The look in Dent’s eyes made me feel depressed! Just because I can’t cast priest spells? Do you have to look at me with such disdain? Whether or not I can use magic doesn’t have much to do with my character, does it?
“I did leave the church today after eating my fill. It was this brother here who didn’t pay for his meal, and they beat him up. I even gave all my blue gold coins to this lady boss…” At this point, I quickly put on a weak look. From my memories of surviving on Earth, I know that humans are always willing to sympathize with the weak.
“One blue gold coin! You clearly ate two blue gold coins’ worth of food!” The girl’s cry, tinged with tears, clearly painted herself as a weak woman. But her claim of two blue gold coins for the meal nearly made even Pastor Dent faint on the spot.
“Two blue gold coins?” Dent, ever the fence-sitter, turned his gaze back to me.
The young man I’d rescued, seeing the situation, perhaps out of conscience or a sense of justice, stepped forward and stood in the open space between the church staff and the crowd, saying, “Everyone, I’m truly sorry. The fault this time really lies with me and this servant of God. We shouldn’t have eaten dinner without paying…”
I couldn’t hear the rest of this ungrateful guy’s words. I never expected he’d actually admit it, and what’s worse, in just a few sentences he’d turned me—the righteous hero—into a shameless scoundrel who refused to admit his wrongdoing.
After hearing the young man’s words, Dent shot me a fierce look, then turned and walked over to the pretty girl. With a kindly expression, he said to her, “Miss, now that the matter is clear, on behalf of the church, I offer you our sincerest apologies. Here is your compensation, please accept it.” Dent took out two blue gold coins from his pocket and placed them in the girl’s hand, then continued, “For this incident, our church will impose strict punishment on George's Servant!” With that, Dent pulled me and that ungrateful bastard back into the church.
I thought at most I’d get a few words of criticism from Pastor Dent, but as soon as we entered the inner chamber of the church, that ungrateful guy suddenly dropped to his knees before the priest, sobbing, “Reverend! Please stand up for me!”
Damn! Could this guy really be suffering some injustice? Is he a noble whose family was wiped out? If that’s true, I’m in big trouble.
While I was still lost in thought, the guy continued, “I was just wandering the streets, when this servant of God dragged me into a restaurant and forced me to eat with him. When we couldn’t pay, he blamed it all on me. Please, sir, help me!”
Damn it! You really are the epitome of ingratitude! The look in Dent’s eyes made it clear he believed that guy.
“It’s not like that…”
“Not like what!?” Dent didn’t give me a chance to speak, and immediately struck the magic summoning bell on the table. The sound of the bell echoed through the church, and before long, both the priests and the battle priests had gathered in the room.
Chapter Twelve: Support from the Battle Priests
“So that’s what happened! Everyone, what do you think we should do with someone who has tarnished the reputation of our church?” Pastor Dent explained the situation to the others.
“No way, right? He’s someone who’s performed miracles before.” One of the priests voiced his opinion.
