Chapter 20

Everyone began to eat quietly, while the middle-aged man ate his bread and looked at William Clark with a certain fanatical expression.

At this moment, Adrian suddenly asked, “William Clark, this... isn’t magic, right? You couldn’t possibly hide so much food on yourself, could you?”

Everyone perked up their ears. William Clark had already thought of an explanation in his heart, so he said, “This is hope, or perhaps a strong wish filled with good intentions. I don’t really know what it is, but I can turn this hope or wish into weapons, into food. What I just held in my hand was this hope or wish, it’s just that you can’t see it.”

As he spoke, William Clark ejected the condensed bullet from the magazine and tossed it to John.

John caught the bullet, and everyone around looked over. They saw that the bullet wasn’t metal at all, but a semi-transparent milky white, completely seamless, with no joints at all. It was clearly not a real bullet.

“This bullet was also condensed from this hope or wish, which is why it’s so powerful, and why it can be fired,” William Clark said.

All of this was true, just not the whole truth. William Clark spoke with confidence; he wasn’t lying.

But in the eyes of the others, this confidence took on a different meaning. This time, another woman, about thirty years old, looking sharp and capable with black-rimmed glasses, immediately said, “Is this faith in a deity?”

“Hope, beautiful wishes... that’s faith!”

The middle-aged man immediately exclaimed. He came before William Clark, knelt down, and devoutly said, “Lord, in this apocalypse you have once again sent down your offspring... You are the Messiah!”

The crowd was instantly in an uproar.

Even William Clark knew what the so-called Messiah was; it’s mentioned in many online novels, anime, and manga.

The original meaning of Messiah aside, after being spread, processed, and interpreted by various sects of Christianity, the Messiah, besides the basic trait of being a savior, now has many different explanations.

From what William Clark knew through novels, movies, manga, and anime, the Messiah is related to the apocalypse.

In Christianity, there are detailed descriptions of the end times, called Judgment Day, when the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse will appear, the angel Michael will sound the trumpet, and God will judge all beings, bringing everything in the world to an end.

At that time, the Messiah will appear, as the rebirth of Jesus, as part of the Trinity, and will save the souls of humanity at the end of days, shelter them, and lead them to heaven.

This is certainly not the original intent of the religious symbol Messiah, but William Clark believed that this was exactly what everyone had in mind at this moment.

But William Clark did not intend to admit it.

On one hand, if he claimed to be the Messiah, especially with an Asian face, others would only be suspicious, or even harbor ill intentions. Maybe because he controlled the food and water, these people wouldn’t voice their doubts, but it would still be a hidden danger.

On the other hand, after being betrayed by the white police officer and the black homeless man, William Clark did not trust these Americans. He couldn’t possibly trust them wholeheartedly just because they flattered him a little.

What he needed was cooperation!

Those monsters are not unbeatable. The known human-faced dogs can be seen as enhanced versions of lions or tigers, but their prey is humans. Even without firearms, as long as humans come to their senses, as long as there is enough organization and numbers, humans can easily wipe them out like crushing bugs.

William Clark wanted to gather enough manpower to deal with these monsters. Only after killing them could he absorb enough white light particles.

In this situation, he had to have a team, and enough authority within that team.

Certainly, using religion, mystique, or faith as authority is possible, but apart from being able to see, absorb, and use white and colorless light particles, he was not truly a superhuman or a divine messenger. Lies are not the way; one lie requires countless more to maintain.

He could deceive everyone for a while, or deceive a few people forever, but if he wanted to live longer and achieve more, he had to abandon all lies.

There’s a saying... sincerity is the greatest weapon!

“I am not the Messiah!”

William Clark immediately denied it. He sincerely said to everyone present, “I can only see these things that represent hope and wishes, and turn them into food and weapons. Other than that, I am no different from you. I have no divine revelation, no special abilities. Believe me, I am just an ordinary person like you.”

The more William Clark said this, the more devoutly the middle-aged man knelt and kept reciting passages from the Bible.
