Chapter 2

Opened the dormitory door, turned on the light, closed the door, picked up the basketball on the desk, threw it into the hoop behind the door—nothing but net, all in one smooth motion!

“2005... I can’t believe I’ve already been here for four years.”

Lying on the bed, staring at the incandescent light on the ceiling, Yes slowly closed his eyes.

Four years of American high school life were about to come to an end.

These four years had been both an anticipation and a torment for him.

From being full of confidence at the start to feeling anxious and uneasy now, it had only been four years.

As an ordinary Chinese high school student, he should be, like many of his peers back in China, working hard for the college entrance exam that was just half a year away.

But now, he was in America.

All of this was because of this inexplicable ‘Basketball Superstar Training System.’

Main Quest: The First Step to Stardom

Quest Requirement: Become a member of a sports school basketball team or an American high school basketball team

Quest Reward: One single-draw star player card voucher

Quest Status: Completed

To complete this so-called main quest from the system, he had been preparing to study abroad in America since the fourth grade.

Why not attend a sports school in China?

He had looked into it, but he was too short. Even though his basketball skills were already outstanding among his peers in China, it was useless.

He didn’t hit his growth spurt until the third year of middle school, by which time he had already been accepted to study in America.

All for the sake of completing this first step of the superstar main quest.

A boy who had practiced basketball since childhood, he managed to score 106 on the TOEFL iBT and 2250 on the SSAT.

Combined with his basketball skills, he finally received a full scholarship to the prestigious James A. Garfield High School in Seattle.

He chose this school because it had the best reputation, the least racial discrimination, a basketball tradition, and a generous scholarship.

“How long have I had this system, anyway?”

Honestly, he didn’t know.

All he knew was that ever since he could remember, this system had always been by his side.

When he was a toddler just learning to speak, he had asked his family about it. After that, he realized that no one but him could see this strange system.

As a child, curious to figure out what this interesting thing was,

while other kids were only interested in the girls, he began a grueling journey of learning to read.

Finally, at the age of three, he learned that this interesting thing was a system called the ‘Basketball Superstar Training System.’

It was also then that he learned about a game of physical combat between men—basketball...

From then on, while other kids played age-appropriate games, his only game was basketball.

Besides the main quest template, the system also had his attribute panel.

As a boy with obsessive-compulsive tendencies from a young age, he thought every day about how to raise the numbers on that panel.

To improve his ball handling, at age three, he spent a whole year dribbling a basketball that was almost as tall as he was.

To improve his passing, at age four, he ambushed his dad with the basketball for six months straight. Luckily, he wasn’t strong enough, or else he wouldn’t have a mom anymore.

To improve his balance, at age seven, ignoring the strange looks from family and others, he would roll on the floor at home and at school for half an hour at a time, whenever he could.

After learning that peeing against the wind could improve strength, well... let’s not talk about that...

In short, because of this inexplicable system, his life path became completely different from his peers.

But he never felt there was anything bad about it.

Whether it was working hard to study abroad in America to complete the system’s main quest,

or doing those seemingly silly exercises to boost his attribute panel, it was all voluntary.

In the end, this system was his very own basketball superstar training game!

And he had always wanted, just like the system’s name, to become a true basketball superstar!

“Looking back now, it was just a dream—a beautiful dream that lasted eighteen years.”

At first, he always thought the system’s attribute panel could be improved endlessly.

So, he was full of confidence about his future.

No matter how tough or strange the training methods were, he was willing to do them.

Because hard work paid off!

Until one day, no matter how much he trained, a certain attribute wouldn’t improve anymore, and he started to worry.

As more and more attributes maxed out, and finally all of them reached their limits, he became truly afraid.

In his third year in America, none of his attributes could be improved any further.

He knew his potential was exhausted, and his fear turned into confusion.
