Chapter 14

Even when his own daughter and son-in-law came back, he just glanced at them and said nothing.

“Autumn, you’re back.”

The kitchen door was pushed open, and the mother-in-law poked her head out. Perhaps both Dr. Sullivan and that younger sister inherited their height from their mother—the mother-in-law was tall, a bit plump now, but still the type who could dominate the “Sunset Red” square and make countless old men swoon.

Blackboard out, take notes, highlight the key points—

Eric Carter finally learned his wife’s full name—Autumn Sullivan.

The mother-in-law’s gaze swept over Eric Carter, clearly pausing for a moment.

“Old man, dinner’s ready, Autumn is back.”

“Finally, we can eat.” The sister-in-law came out of the study, waved her fist at Eric Carter, then pouted, signaling Eric Carter to pay attention to his parents.

This little gesture wasn’t bad. Although this girl was a bit overbearing, she wasn’t too much.

Eric Carter went to the bathroom to wash his hands. While he was washing, Autumn Sullivan came in too. The two of them used hand soap together, rubbing their hands very carefully.

Autumn Sullivan glanced at Eric Carter a couple more times, then rinsed her hands and walked into the living room.

Eric Carter also finished washing, wiped his hands with a tissue, and left the bathroom.

Everyone sat down. Eric Carter took the seat next to Autumn Sullivan.

The mother-in-law, with a stern face, brought the bowls of rice one by one. When she put the bowl in front of Eric Carter, she clearly used a bit more force.

Luckily,

She didn’t deliberately refuse to serve me rice.

Eric Carter thought to himself.

“Ryan Cooper, do you think we treat you badly?” The mother-in-law asked as soon as she sat down, before even eating.

“It’s fine.” Eric Carter replied.

“Then why didn’t you come home last night? Who were you giving attitude to…”

“Mom, let’s eat. He had something at the shop, he told me about it.” Autumn Sullivan spoke up.

The mother-in-law and father-in-law exchanged glances, a bit surprised that their eldest daughter was actually speaking up for this son-in-law. They weren’t used to it and momentarily forgot to keep pressing the issue.

The sister-in-law was also surprised. Her sister had never cared much about this so-called brother-in-law. Did the sun rise in the west today?

“Let’s eat.” The father-in-law picked up his chopsticks and gestured, “You eat too.” He specifically pointed at Eric Carter with his chopsticks.

Hmm, a bit rude, but at least it meant last night’s incident was over.

“Autumn, have some braised pork. Mom stewed it for a long time.”

The mother-in-law put a piece of meat in both her daughters’ bowls, then hesitated, but still put a piece in her son-in-law’s bowl too.

Only then did Eric Carter realize he hadn’t eaten all day, from last night’s soul transfer until now, not a bite.

He didn’t stand on ceremony,

Picked up the meat and put it in his mouth.

Immediately,

Eric Carter’s face froze.

A wave of unexpected nausea surged from within, his stomach starting to spasm violently.

“Ugh…” Eric Carter dry-heaved on the spot, as if he were eating poison.

“……” Mother-in-law.

“……” Father-in-law.

The atmosphere at the table

Instantly dropped to freezing point.

Chapter 7: Scared the Crap Out of Me!

“Sorry.”

Eric Carter raised his hand to show he didn’t do it on purpose, because this was really embarrassing, especially since he didn’t know why “Ryan Cooper” as a live-in son-in-law was so unwelcome by his in-laws.

“Not feeling well?” Dr. Sullivan put down her chopsticks and asked.

“It’s nothing, really.”

Eric Carter picked up his chopsticks again and shoveled some rice into his mouth.

But as soon as he started chewing,

His stomach spasmed again, a strong wave of nausea rising from deep inside, as if what he was about to swallow wasn’t rice, but something as disgusting as poop.

“Pfft…”

This time,

Eric Carter spat all the rice out of his mouth,

Spraying it all over his father-in-law and mother-in-law sitting across from him.

Rice stuck to his father-in-law’s glasses and hair,

And his mother-in-law’s neatly pinned hair was dotted with shiny white grains.

With a “clack,”

His father-in-law’s chopsticks fell to the table, his face twitching as if he didn’t know what emotion to use to face the situation.

His mother-in-law took a deep breath, her eyes blazing with fury!

This was

A slap in the face!

“Bang!”

The mother-in-law pushed back her chair and stood up.

“Ryan Cooper!”

The mother-in-law was a retired head nurse, so she knew—even if someone was sick, it was impossible to spit out food so dramatically. Besides, looking at Ryan Cooper, he didn’t seem “critically ill or on his last legs.”

He did it on purpose,

He definitely did it on purpose!

He’s rebelling!

Rebelling!

Eric Carter clutched his chest, left the table, rushed into the bathroom, lifted the toilet lid, and started dry-heaving desperately.

This time, he even vomited up bile, his mouth filled with bitterness.

This meal was definitely over.
