Chapter 9

Back in 1996, the domestic futures business was just emerging, creating quite a buzz for a while. Dafa Company was bustling with people, the trading hall was packed and lively. Every day, Julia Walker was able to earn a considerable amount of commission.

After watching the K-line chart for a while, Julia Walker gradually pushed the matter of William Walker to the back of her mind.

She had already discussed with Eugene Young that after they officially got married, the two families would merge, and Dafa Company's business would at least double. Eugene Young planned to invest tens of millions for her to do short-term trading.

When it came to futures, Eugene Young seemed to know quite a bit as well.

He was known as the “Financial King” of Tiannan Province, so he must have real skills.

But just as Julia Walker was starting to feel at ease, William Walker suddenly showed up again. He barged into her office swaggeringly without even being announced by the secretary.

“What is it?”

At first, Julia Walker thought it was her secretary and asked without even looking up.

“Auntie.”

William Walker called out with a grin, as if nothing had happened that morning.

“It’s you? What are you doing here?”

Julia Walker’s eyebrows shot up, and she couldn’t help but burst out in anger.

This kid actually dared to show up!

“This is my aunt’s company, why can’t I come?”

William Walker completely ignored Julia Walker’s anger, grinning cheekily as he walked over. Noticing that Julia Walker’s teacup was empty, he casually took it, refilled it with fresh tea at the water dispenser, and respectfully placed it in front of Julia Walker with both hands.

“Chairwoman, please have some tea!”

His slick manner was rather annoying.

Julia Walker was unmoved, still staring at him with a stern face, and said coldly, “Erzi, you can’t get away with what happened today. You need to tell me clearly—who put you up to this?”

Julia Walker had always suspected that William Walker was acting on someone’s orders. Otherwise, at his young age, still a student, why would he inexplicably target Eugene Young?

There was simply no connection between the two!

William Walker chuckled and sat down in the chair opposite Julia Walker, habitually leaning back. He picked up a cigarette from the shiny executive desk, lit one, and slipped half a pack of good cigarettes into his own pocket.

This was William Walker’s usual move—every time he came to Julia Walker’s place, he managed to snag some good cigarettes to show off to his buddies.

To be fair, although Julia Walker looked down a bit on him and his father, she actually treated him quite well. She would occasionally slip him three or five hundred yuan, but every time she gave him money, she would always lecture him with a stern face, telling him to behave properly, not to be so careless, and at least look like a policeman.

William Walker was also quite close to his two aunts.

If not, he wouldn’t have bothered to mess with Eugene Young!

“Auntie, let me ask you first—are you really planning to marry that Eugene Young?”

William Walker took a deep drag on his cigarette, then slowly exhaled, looking completely at ease.

Julia Walker had a headache.

This kid was just a bit of a rascal—no matter how stern she acted, she could never scare him.

“Erzi, this is grown-ups’ business. Why are you meddling?”

Julia Walker scolded him with a stern face.

“Auntie, if this Yang guy was marrying someone else, I wouldn’t bother. But if he’s marrying you, it’s not just one person’s business—it concerns our whole Wang family. I really can’t just stand by.”

William Walker tried hard to look serious as he spoke.

But the casual look in his eyes and at the corners of his mouth was impossible to hide.

This kind of irreverence was almost innate!

Actually, sometimes William Walker was quite troubled by this trait. Deep down, he really wanted to be more proper, at least get some kind of official position at work. Officer Wang wasn’t the type to be aloof—he was quite willing to bow for a bowl of rice.

But those bastards wouldn’t even give him a bowl of rice, and that just wasn’t fun.

Julia Walker snorted coldly and said, “I’ll say it again—who put you up to this?”

Although Julia Walker didn’t deny that William Walker was part of the Wang family, in her view, who she married really had little to do with William Walker. Even if it had some impact, could it really reach all the way to the border city?

She knew that after graduation, William Walker would definitely go back to work in the border city.

Police academy students were usually assigned to fixed posts.

Of course, as the grandson of “Tiger Wang,” if William Walker wanted to stay and work in the provincial capital, it wouldn’t be impossible. But that rural woman’s health wasn’t good, so William Walker would most likely go back home to take care of his mother.

This kid might be mischievous, but he was very filial.

“Auntie, don’t get hung up on that. No one put me up to it. I just want to ask—are you really not the least bit wary of that so-called financial business of Yunfan Family?”

“What exactly are you trying to say?”

Julia Walker was so exasperated by him that she didn’t know what to do.

If this were her own child, she might have slapped him already.

But looking at William Walker’s expression, he actually seemed “bitterly disappointed,” taking a deep drag on his cigarette and exhaling heavily, he said, “Alright, Auntie, I’ll be blunt—Eugene Young’s Yunfan Family is suspected of illegal fundraising!”

In William Walker’s view, this was as plain as day—anyone with half a brain could see it clearly.

Actually, that was a bit of an assumption.

In later years, starting around 2013, there was a nationwide outbreak of major illegal fundraising cases, involving an unimaginable number of people and a vast scope. For a time, the very mention of it sent chills down people’s spines!
