Chapter 20

Because Grace Carter planned to gather some information about William King from the Martial Arts Association and refused to go hiking with her and Henry Foster, Claire Carter felt quite resentful. William King's trademark fake smile instantly triggered all her pent-up frustration: “And that tone of yours, making my sister choose—what right do you have?”

William King paused slightly as he walked toward the house. He glanced at Claire Carter, his gentle and refined smile fading. He looked at Claire Carter, was silent for a moment, and said, “I’m laughing at your ignorance and fearlessness. You should be grateful you’re Brian Carter’s daughter—he once saved my life. If an ordinary person dared to speak to me like this again and again after I’d already tolerated them, I would have slapped her to death by now.”

When he said the word “death,” William King’s tone remained as calm as ever, but the steward George Wright, who had already reached the third level of martial cultivation, suddenly sensed an indescribable, terrifying crisis. His expression changed instantly, and he immediately stepped forward.

Even Ethan Cook, who was looking at a photo album in the nearby lounge area, suddenly looked up. Her gaze fell on William King, and seeing his face—still looking refined even with black glasses—she was filled with shock and uncertainty.

That sense of crisis...

It didn’t come from being locked onto by someone’s aura, nor from verbal threats, nor from killing intent or oppressive presence. It was a kind of pressure on the level of life itself, as if a mole scurrying through the forest suddenly encountered an eagle swooping down from the sky—a primal terror at meeting a natural enemy.

For a moment, the entire living room fell eerily silent, even Claire Carter seemed startled.

“Hm? What’s going on?”

At this moment, Grace Carter’s voice came from upstairs.

Having just finished her conversation with Anna Evans, Grace Carter looked at the unusually quiet living room and asked.

As soon as Grace Carter spoke, Claire Carter snapped out of that indescribable fear. Realizing she’d actually been frightened by William King, she immediately jumped up in grievance, pointed at William King, and shouted, “Sis, sister, he wants to hit me! He said he wants to kill me!”

Chapter 10 Consideration

“Hmm!?”

Claire Carter’s words made Grace Carter frown slightly. Although she knew her younger sister could be mischievous at times, that was just because of her age. As an adult, how could William King say such things to her? “William King...”

“You’re here just in time.”

William King didn’t give Grace Carter a chance to speak and said directly, “The Kunwu Wonderland is opening again. There are some things that need to be clarified.”

“Don’t try to change the subject, William King. You just said you wanted to kill me, didn’t you? I can’t believe you pretend to be so refined on the outside, but you’re actually so violent, wanting to kill me! After hiding it for so many years, you finally show your true colors? I knew it! If you don’t explain yourself today, don’t blame me for asking Uncle Wright to throw you out right now!”

Claire Carter shouted relentlessly, her face full of grievance.

“Noisy.”

“You... Sis, look at him...”

Grace Carter knew Claire Carter’s temperament. She immediately gestured for her to stop making a fuss, then turned her gaze to George Wright: “Uncle Wright, what happened just now?”

“This...”

George Wright recalled the sudden panic he’d just felt, still a bit confused. He also found it hard to believe that such a terrifying feeling could have come from William King. Now that Grace Carter was asking, he answered truthfully: “Mr. King came in looking for you, Miss, wanting to discuss something. I informed Mr. King that you were receiving guests, but he seemed a bit anxious and wanted you to stop talking with Miss Evans, which led to the second young lady’s dissatisfaction. Her words were a bit harsh, and then...”

“And then what?”

Grace Carter’s delicate brows furrowed slightly.

“Mr. King said that if it weren’t for the fact that the master once saved his life, with the second young lady offending him repeatedly, he would have slapped her to death by now...”

“Yes, yes, that’s exactly what he said! I just didn’t want him to disturb you and Sister Evans, and he actually said he’d slap me to death! Sis, you have to stand up for me! Why are we keeping someone like this in our house? We should kick him out right away! I don’t want to live in fear every day.”

Claire Carter hurriedly complained about her grievances.

William King glanced at Claire Carter, shook his head, and couldn’t be bothered to respond. He turned directly to Grace Carter: “Back then, your father’s life-saving grace...”

“Uncle Wright and Claire are telling the truth.”

Before William King could finish, Grace Carter interrupted him with a somewhat cold tone.

“Heh...”

William King chuckled. “So what if it’s true? So what if it’s not?”

“If it’s true... Claire is still young. You’re older than her, yet you speak so harshly. In that case, I can only ask you to apologize to Claire, or else ask you to leave first.”

William King glanced at the coldly staring Grace Carter in the room, at Claire Carter who looked a bit aggrieved but even more smug, and at the wary George Wright and Ethan Cook. After a moment, he shook his head: “Originally, I wanted you to decide whether this so-called marriage farce between us should continue, but now, I think the answer is already obvious.”
