The little commotion at the academy gate didn’t cause any bigger waves. I left the fainted middle-aged conman where he was and ignored him, took Emily Bennett with me, and drove off. If someone calls the police, so be it—after all, I’m not the one who suffered any loss.
The Raven and his people shouldn’t be that incompetent.
In fact, I suspect that the mastermind behind this scam wasn’t The Raven. The trick was novel, but the execution was clumsy. Their response was quick, but they went down the wrong path from the start—when I exposed the two fake bodyguards, the scammers should have given up. That’s not The Raven’s style; The Raven is famously cautious and conservative, rarely taking risks. Even if it’s just a test, they’d do it flawlessly, leaving no trace. Why didn’t I bother with that middle-aged conman? Because I felt there was nothing more to dig out of him—he was just an insignificant pawn.
It wasn’t The Raven who acted, but a third-rate gang of scammers under The Raven’s orders.
There’s really no point fussing over such small fry.
I’m looking forward to The Raven’s next probe.
The Iron Duke cruised steadily on the way back. In the back seat, The Bennett Family’s Little Sister remained silent, only occasionally sneaking glances at me out of the corner of her eye, a mix of curiosity and fear.
I could tell she had something to say.
“Go ahead and ask.”
Emily Bennett opened her eyes wide in surprise.
“Don’t you have something you want to ask me?”
The girl shrank her head a little, embarrassed. “I just feel you’re a bit different from other bodyguards.”
I wholeheartedly agreed. “That’s because I’m a peerless master.”
The Bennett Family’s Little Sister quickly lowered her head to cover her mouth, clearly trying not to laugh.
A few minutes later, the little sister composed herself and asked seriously, “Can you tell me what really happened?”
“What did your family say?”
“Father didn’t explain in detail, only said that Tianjing City has been a bit dangerous lately. But I know it can’t be that simple.”
“Oh, you’re overthinking it.”
“I am not! Didn’t someone just pretend to be a bodyguard and try to kidnap me!? Are you going to say that was a coincidence!?”
I started seriously considering how to fool this overly curious little sister. But Emily Bennett quickly spoke up.
“Forget it, I won’t make things difficult for you. Father must have told you to keep it secret—he’s always like that…”
What a considerate kid.
Old Master Bennett warned me a thousand times to keep this from you. If you keep pressing, I’ll lose my million-a-week salary!
“I’ll ask him myself when I get home.”
Damn this little brat!
Just as I was thinking about how to make her drop the idea, a sudden pain shot through my head. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a freight truck loaded with steel bars roaring toward us from a side street! I immediately pressed the ejection button on the steering wheel. The Iron Duke shot into the air as if a bomb had gone off underneath, catching the truck off guard. It scraped under the Iron Duke’s chassis, crashed through the roadside barrier, and smashed its cab into a low building. A burst of blood splattered out—the driver was probably dead.
The Iron Duke landed smoothly. A familiar scent drifted in through the window crack. I immediately floored the accelerator, twin blue flames shooting from the rear as we sped forward. Seconds later, the truck’s wreckage exploded violently, shrapnel shredding the road within fifty meters.
It was a suicide truck!
Interesting. This isn’t the city center, but it’s still Tianjing’s jurisdiction. Who would dare pull off a bombing in Tianjing City—just for a The Bennett Family girl!?
If the Iron Duke hadn’t been modified, we’d have been in real danger just now. And if this place weren’t so remote, who knows how many innocent people would have died!
I looked back at Emily Bennett. The girl’s face was as pale as paper, clearly still in shock.
I couldn’t relax either. If all of The Raven’s tests are this crazy and reckless with innocent lives, even the Tianjing government won’t tolerate me! I immediately called Ethan Ford on my phone. He’d already left Tianjing by now. When I told him what happened, he could only give a wry laugh.
“Didn’t expect The Raven to be a bunch of lunatics. But don’t worry, the Tianjing government isn’t that despicable.”
“You sure?”
I’ve always thought that a politician who isn’t despicable enough isn’t a good politician.
Ethan Ford said, “Relax, The Bennett Family isn’t just any ordinary family.”
That explanation works for me…
“Also, I think I need a more unrestricted identity.”
“Alright, I’ll try to arrange it for you. But don’t go overboard.”
“Don’t worry, Old Master Bennett is only paying me a million a week.”
“……”
I hung up, and the Iron Duke continued toward the city center. As we neared the urban area, it was no longer a place where outsiders could run wild. The warnings in my mind faded, and I gradually relaxed.
Only then did I remember the big trouble still sitting in the back seat.
I really shouldn’t have called Ethan Ford in front of her just now.
Sure enough, Emily Bennett’s eyes were flickering, her suspicions long past the point of being brushed off, but she still didn’t ask me anything.
How ridiculous. Old Master Bennett expected me to keep this from the girl, but on the very first day, things went off the rails. It’s laughable and exasperating.
I made one last effort.
“Miss Bennett…”
Emily Bennett blinked. “?”
“There’s something I’d like to discuss with you.”
“Alright.”
