Chapter 2

At the southern tip of the continent, Amy Empire would often occupy all the land in the shortest possible time—or perhaps “occupy” isn’t the right word, because in this region, Harper Kingdom had never stationed a single soldier. After the war began, on the northernmost edge of the northern federation of Amy Empire—the Snowy Forest—large numbers of Harper People wolf-rider warriors would always launch attacks on the northern federation of Amy Empire along the only Dragonfang Mountain highway across the frozen continent.

On the frozen continent, regardless of the type of troops, when facing the white-bearded Harper People, clad in snow-white battle garments woven from polar bear fur, riding snow-white wolf mounts, and surrounded by a world of white, there was only one outcome: retreat.

Any type of troop could only exert less than 10% of their combat power on the frozen continent. Even the invincible dragon cavalry could only reach 50% of their strength. And how many dragon cavalry did Amy Empire have? Not even as many as a single squad of Harper People wolf-riders.

There were also several monarchs of Amy Empire who hoped to obtain Snow Moon Lake and Warmwater River through diplomacy or blackmail, but the simple-minded Harper Kingdom would refuse to sign any agreement as soon as they saw any wording related to territory.

The sole reason for this situation was that the founding monarch of Amy Empire, Amy I, had once successfully deceived the king of Harper Empire, and in that deception, had acquired territory from Harper Empire amounting to about 25% of its original size, and established the northern federation of Amy Empire. Amy I promised Harper Empire that he was willing to exchange the best land in his country—the heartland of the Aiminor Continent, the Huayu Plain—for the southern part of the frozen continent, and showed the king of Harper Empire the abundant fruits and animals produced there. Harper EmpireGeorge VII was greatly tempted, and despite the strong opposition of his royal brother and the empress dowager, signed the land exchange agreement that shocked both continents. After the agreement was signed, almost everyone thought Amy I was crazy, trading the richest land for the most barren—except for the empress dowager and the royal brother of Harper Empire at the time. The latter, in anger, returned to his own territory, declared independence at the risk of execution, and established the Northern Harper Empire.

At that time, George VII was eager to move the capital to the Huayu Plain and made the major decision to gradually abandon the frozen continent’s territory, so he did not argue with his royal brother. The royal brother took advantage of this precious time to rapidly expand his own domain from the secondary capital of Harper Empire, until he occupied all the land east and north of Dragonfang Mountain.

George VII and his ministers, overjoyed, arrived at the Huayu Plain. Their first impression was that they had entered a paradise. The northern part of the Huayu Plain was like spring all year round, with humid air and flowers blooming in all colors. Riding across the plain for three days and nights, there would always be flowers in sight and fragrance in the air. The southern part of the Huayu Plain was a humid, rainy region, with vast broadleaf rainforests full of sweet fruits.

However, in the five years after establishing the new capital, the city built by George VII was breached three times by neighboring countries. The last time, George VII charged into the imperial army, washing away the shame of his mistaken decision with blood.

Why did the most powerful nation on the frozen continent become so weak after moving to the Aiminor Continent? Where had the invincible snow wolf cavalry gone?

According to later military strategists, the theories of troop countering and troop enhancement were written with the blood of emperors and a hundred thousand snow wolf cavalry.

The Harper People, who had lived on the frozen continent for generations, all had very long hair and beards, especially their eyebrows and eyelashes. To avoid being blinded by sunlight reflecting off the snow, their eyebrows and eyelashes were not only long but grew rapidly. But after moving to the humid Huayu Plain, this physiological trait became unbearable, with water droplets constantly hanging from their brows. The nobles and ministers could still find time to have someone groom them. But what about the soldiers? How could they fight under such conditions? The snow wolves’ fur was even longer and all white; in the hot plains, the snow wolves, unable to adapt to the climate, had no combat power at all. In battle, what was once natural camouflage now became the color of their burial shrouds.

In the end, of the hundred thousand troops that entered the Huayu Grasslands, only a little over ten thousand set foot on their homeland again. From then on, the Harper People learned one thing: never discuss anything related to territory with anyone.

Snow Moon Lake was formed by a volcanic eruption a hundred years after the Harper People retreated to the frozen continent, and the Harper People would never make any mistakes regarding it.

Because of the Huayu Plain, the Harper People kept a respectful distance from Snow Moon Lake and Warmwater River, never sending any troops, but absolutely refusing to let any territory be lost. If war broke out, they would immediately dispatch troops from the Snowy Forest to threaten the capital, Ice Fortress, of the external federation of Amy Empire. In the end, they would force Amy Empire to withdraw its troops.
