Chapter 5

Robert Carter snorted coldly and said indifferently, “Grace Carter, put away your ridiculous idea of repaying kindness. Your mother and I may just be ordinary people without outstanding talent, but we would never stoop so low as to use family ties or gratitude to keep a genius girl as our daughter-in-law!”

“If you still acknowledge us as your parents, then keep moving forward and carve out your own life for yourself! If you don’t see us as your parents, then leave! Now that you’ve grown your wings, you’re a Dan Yuan expert, a grandmaster of your generation, you can go anywhere in the world! We’ll just pretend we never raised you. My son can find a wife; he doesn’t need your pity!”

“Waa…”

Grace Carter burst into tears, throwing herself into Emily Wright’s arms, her whole body trembling as she sobbed, “Mom… Dad scolded me…”

Emily Wright hugged her daughter and looked reproachfully at Robert Carter: “If you’re unhappy, just say so, why be so fierce?! Can’t you speak nicely? This is what I can’t stand about you—once you lose your temper, you’re not yourself anymore.”

Robert Carter snorted again, still angry: “Then tell me, isn’t this girl just asking for it?”

He then turned to look at Brian Carter: “Did you hear that?”

Brian Carter was hunching his shoulders and lowering his head, secretly laughing. He always couldn’t help but gloat when his sister got scolded.

And that line from Dad, ‘the two of us don’t have much talent,’ made Brian Carter feel even more amused. He was stifling a laugh when suddenly a shout startled him. He immediately looked up, blinking, and said timidly, “Ah.”

“Ah what! Let me tell you, your sister and you are not meant to walk the same path in the future, so don’t get any ideas!”

Robert Carter snorted and said, “That would be bad for both of you.”

Brian Carter shivered, shrank his neck, and said cautiously, “How would I dare…”

He thought to himself: This violent girl only acts gentle in front of you and outsiders. I’ve been beaten by her for over ten years—haven’t I had enough? If she really became my wife, and I can’t beat her, wouldn’t I be getting beaten for life?

I’ve known this since I was six, but after she beat me forty or fifty times that year, I refused.

I’m not going to ask for trouble.

Grace Carter hugged Robert Carter’s arm and acted cute: “Daddy, can’t you just forgive me… But did you have to say all that in front of Doggie… It’ll make him sad.” As she spoke, she looked at Brian Carter with concern.

Just in time to see Brian Carter glare and roar, “Don’t call me Doggie!”

Grace Carter burst out laughing through her tears and made a face at him.

Robert Carter sighed and said, “Brian’s innate talent is average, martial arts are hopeless; innate talent is a reality that no one on the whole continent can change. In this world where the strong are respected, he won’t go far. It’s better to live an ordinary life. Grace has a bright future ahead, you’re destined to be people from two different worlds… If we don’t make this clear now, if anyone develops other ideas, it will only lead to regret, and who would that help?”

“When that time comes… it’ll be even more painful.”

Robert Carter let out a long, helpless sigh, his resignation clear on his face.

Emily Wright also sighed softly, gently rocking her daughter in her arms, and said tenderly, “Grace, I understand how you feel… But your father is right, you have to listen to him… You said yourself that we treat you like our own. How could we bear to hold you back? Besides… you have to understand, with your achievements now, if you really stayed… it would only harm your brother… If you really stayed and married him, I’m afraid he… wouldn’t survive a few days…”

Grace Carter shuddered at these words, suddenly straightening up from her mother’s arms, her face turning serious and silent.

Her beautiful eyebrows slowly knitted together, and a sharp aura flashed across her face.

After that, the whole family fell silent and ate in silence.

Brian Carter thought for a long time, but his mind wasn’t on romance at all. What he was really focused on… was that one million. After a while, he finally mustered up the courage and said, “Dad, you spent a million on pills for my sister?”

Robert Carter had already calmed down and replied blandly, “What, do you have a problem with that?”

Brian Carter grinned and said, “Dad, my dear dad, it’s perfectly reasonable and right for you to buy pills for my sister, nothing could be more appropriate. But… I’m your son too, so it’s only natural for me to be a little envious, right… I definitely wouldn’t dare ask for a million… How about you give me ten thousand… what do you think?”

Robert Carter frowned and slowly turned his head to look: “Hmm?”

“…Or eight thousand… five thousand, five thousand is fine!” Brian Carter weakly raised his hand, and seeing his old man about to glare, he quickly changed his tune: “Dad, hehe… three thousand, just three thousand…”

“Still about that weird dream? I don’t have a single cent left now!” Robert Carter calmly picked up a piece of meat and put it in his mouth, chewing with relish.

“For that weird dream of yours, over the past few years, I’ve spent tens of thousands. The first experiment, you said you weren’t ready, and everything was ruined. The second and third times, there were other reasons… This is the fifth time you’ve asked for money. I really don’t have any left. To keep me from secretly giving you money, your mom has confiscated all my private savings.”

“I’ll give you a piece of advice… go ask your mom.”

Brian Carter pulled a long face: “If my mom would give it to me, would I still be asking you… This is just too unfair…”
