Chapter 6

The one who was to move into the British concession this time was none other than Comrade Samuel Parker.

Originally, Samuel Parker had been living in the French concession. However, Kuomintang agents had already infiltrated the French concession and were openly tailing anti-Japanese activists.

The situation was extremely dangerous; the agents could strike at any moment. The French concession was no longer suitable for activity, so an emergency relocation was necessary.

Compared to the French concession, the British concession had better security. No matter which political party, none wanted to cause trouble here.

Whether it was the Japanese or Kuomintang agents, it was difficult for them to carry out persecution in the British concession.

“No problem, I guarantee the mission will be completed.” A look of determination appeared in Andrew Carter’s eyes. Protecting his comrades was his unshirkable duty.

After parting ways with William Thompson, Andrew Carter cautiously observed his surroundings. Seeing nothing unusual, he walked a distance before hailing a rickshaw.

After arriving at Guangshan Street, with still a few hundred meters to go before reaching Zhianli, Andrew Carter asked the driver to stop.

When Andrew Carter got out to pay, he suddenly froze.

His own actions were so similar to what David Bolton had done on Edinburgh Road and Campbell South Road.

What did this mean?

Could it be that David Bolton, like himself, also had a secret identity?

Once this thought arose in Andrew Carter’s mind, it immediately took root and began to grow.

He quickly ran through the idea in his mind, testing its plausibility.

The more he thought about it, the more mysterious David Bolton seemed.

All of a sudden, Andrew Carter overturned all his previous impressions of David Bolton and began to reassess his identity.

David Bolton had lent him money, and it certainly wasn’t out of pure goodwill.

He used an alias, and it definitely wasn’t just to do good deeds anonymously.

Just as William Thompson had said, all of this was because he harbored ulterior motives.

Andrew Carter had also wondered whether David Bolton befriended him because of his identity.

After graduating from the police training academy, Andrew Carter was bound to become a police officer. Whether in the Chinese district or the concessions, he could more or less be of help to David Bolton.

At the time, Claisenqi had admired him greatly. Perhaps that was what David Bolton had seen in him. Sure enough, Andrew Carter eventually ended up in the British concession.

If David Bolton were merely a legitimate businessman, it would be understandable for him to want to make friends.

But if David Bolton had ulterior motives, the situation would be completely different.

Suddenly, Andrew Carter recalled the look on William Thompson’s face just now. He had asked him to describe in detail David Bolton’s actions from Wang’s Clinic to the Guangfa Hotel—perhaps he, too, was suspicious.

Andrew Carter kept thinking about David Bolton as he unconsciously walked toward Zhianli.

Zhianli was Andrew Carter’s home. Going straight home wouldn’t attract anyone’s attention.

Changing into a different set of clothes at home and making another transfer would make his meeting with William Thompson even safer.

As he neared Zhianli, a young man and woman approached from the opposite direction.

At first, Andrew Carter didn’t pay attention—after all, the streetlights were dim. But when he heard their murmured conversation, his heart suddenly began to pound.

Because he recognized that both were old friends.

The man was named Ryan Cooper, the woman Grace Morgan; both were childhood friends of Andrew Carter.

They had been in the same class in both elementary and middle school, and both lived in Zhianli. Their relationship was especially close. In particular, Grace Morgan and Andrew Carter had been inseparable since childhood.

After Andrew Carter was admitted to the Haigu Police Training Academy, he had much less contact with them and no longer participated in their activities.

After secretly joining the Communist Party, Andrew Carter followed William Thompson’s instructions to avoid contact with left-leaning individuals as much as possible.

However, his former classmates and friends didn’t know this.

They simply thought that after Andrew Carter’s father passed away, his personality changed drastically—he was no longer patriotic, no longer anti-Japanese, and the fire in him had gone cold.

As a result, they greatly misunderstood Andrew Carter.

Andrew Carter couldn’t explain, and some things simply couldn’t be explained.

After hearing their voices, Andrew Carter originally wanted to avoid them.

But sharp-eyed Ryan Cooper had already spotted Andrew Carter.

After all, they had been playmates since they were little, running around naked together. Even seeing just Andrew Carter’s silhouette, they could tell it was him.

“Andrew Carter!” Ryan Cooper shouted. He was tall and had a booming voice. In a few strides, he rushed up to Andrew Carter, blocking his way like a highway robber.

“Ryan Cooper, hello.” Andrew Carter realized it was too late to dodge, gave a wry smile, and said helplessly.

As soon as Ryan Cooper spoke, he could feel the other’s anger.

It had been almost two years—he had been avoiding them all this time.

As for Grace Morgan, he only glanced at her before quickly looking away.

“What, are you afraid to see me?” Ryan Cooper said coldly.

He and Andrew Carter truly were brothers who had played together since childhood. Their families lived close by, and they had been in the same class in both elementary and middle school, with a particularly close relationship.

But after Andrew Carter was admitted to the Haigu Police Training Academy, everything changed.

Andrew Carter no longer participated in their activities and gradually grew distant.

This left Ryan Cooper very puzzled. Did becoming a police officer mean you couldn’t be patriotic anymore?

As far as he knew, some police officers were still very sympathetic to and supportive of their patriotic actions.
